FDA: Updates On Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB) Recalls
Torrent expands its voluntary recall of losartan
Update [1/3/2019] Torrent Pharmaceuticals is expanding its voluntary recall to include eight additional lots of losartan potassium tablets, for a total of 10 lots. This recall is due to trace amounts of N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) in the losartan active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufactured by Hetero Labs Limited.
Torrent is only recalling lots of losartan medication containing NDEA above the interim acceptable intake level of 0.27 parts per million.
The agency also updated the list of losartan medications under recall.

FTC: This is what a Social Security scam sounds like
December 27, 2018
by Jennifer Leach
Acting Associate Director, Division of Consumer and Business Education, FTC
Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million...
Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

WA ATG: AG FERGUSON OBTAINS MORE THAN $7M IN STUDENT DEBT RELIEF FOR THOUSANDS OF WASHINGTONIANS FROM FOR-PROFIT COLLEGE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Jan 3 2019
For-profit education company Career Education Corporation misrepresented the cost of attendance and job placement rates to its students
OLYMPIA — More than 3,000 Washingtonians will receive more than $7.6 million in debt relief from Career Education Corporation (CEC), a for-profit higher education company, as part of Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s legal action over the company’s use of deceptive practices to attract potential students. CEC owned and operated two campuses in Washington until they closed down.
Today’s resolution is a result of a multistate investigation into CEC’s deceptive and misleading practices. Washington and 47 other states investigated the company’s recruitment practices and found that CEC misrepresented the cost of attendance, graduation rates, expected future salaries for graduates and job placement rates. CEC will forgo collecting more than $493.6 million in debts owed by nearly 175,000 students nationwide.
Student loan work of the Attorney General’s Office
Ferguson has filed two lawsuits against the federal government to defend important student loan protections.
In January 2017, Ferguson filed a lawsuit, along with the state of Illinois and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, against loan servicer Navient. The lawsuit alleges that Navient engaged in a number of unfair and deceptive practices, including misapplying borrower payments and using aggressive and misleading collection tactics.
He also has recovered almost $1.5 million cracking down on debt adjustment companies that charge fees to help borrowers consolidate their federal student loans and enroll in income-driven repayment plans — tasks that borrowers’ loan servicers can and should help them with for free. More information on the office’s student loan work is available here.

Ethan Siegel: The Simplest Explanation Of Global Warming Ever
It cannot be proven that human activity is the cause of global warming, of course. That conclusion we drew is still a scientific inference. But based on what we know about planetary science, Earth’s atmosphere, human activity and the warming we’re observing, it seems like a very good one. When we quantify the other effects, it’s unlikely that anything else could be the cause. Not the Sun, not volcanoes, not any natural phenomenon that we know of.
The Earth is warming, and humans are the cause. The next steps — of what to do about it — are 100% up to us.”
So many of us have such strong opinions on global warming and global climate change that are tied to issues that go way beyond science: the economy, energy, politics, and the envrionment, just for starters. However, if you were attempting to legitimately conduct scientific inquiry into the issue, there would just be two questions that were of any importance: is the Earth warming, and if so, what’s the cause?
Assuming you didn’t know any of it, what’s the science behind all of this? This is the simplest explanation that allows you to figure it out.
