Gov’t Shutdown: Washington State DSHS UPDATE 01/10/2019
December 20, 2018 at 4:46 PM
Partial Government Shutdown UPDATE 01/10/2019:
What are the impacts to cash benefits such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)?
At this time, we do not anticipate any immediate impacts to cash benefits or services through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), State Family Assistance (SFA) and the Aged, Blind or Disabled Program (ABD).
What are the impacts to Basic Food assistance?
On January 8, 2019, we were directed by USDA Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) to issue February benefits by January 20th. We are working quickly to understand and implement the guidance we received, and further details will be coming.
What would happen with Work training programs?
If you are participating in Workforce training programs funded through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) there are no anticipated impacts to services, at this time.
What would happen with disability benefits (SSDI)?
The Disability Determination Services (DDS) is contracted to the Social Security Administration (SSA) to adjudicate medical eligibility for disability benefits under Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) rules and regulations. Currently, there are no anticipated impacts to benefits due to the federal government shutdown.
We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as we learn more.

Not Strictly Toledo: Oregon Zoo offers free entry for furloughed federal employees
Federal employees and families affected by government shutdown can see zoo for free
The Oregon Zoo is offering free admission for furloughed federal employees and their families during the partial government shutdown, zoo officials said. The offer — which is effective immediately and will last throughout the shutdown — is also good for federal contractors who are affected.
To receive free admission, furloughed employees must show their federal ID or badge.
"We know it is a tough time for many people who are out of work during this shutdown," said Dr. Don Moore, Oregon Zoo director. "We wanted to give these public servants and their families something fun to do and help ease their financial burden."
Dr. Moore noted that his former employer, Smithsonian's National Zoo, is closed to the public because of the shutdown, and some of the Oregon Zoo's partners at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service may also be affected.
