Toledo Senior Center, currently one of 5 in Lewis County, is facing funding cuts at close of 2017. Site Coordinator Glenda Forga has been tasked with establishing a Transition Team to find alternative operating solutions. She reports:

The Transition Team Committee met on February 1, 2017 at the Twin Cities Senior Center to begin work on finding a solution to the funding deficit facing the Lewis County Senior Programs for 2018.

During the meeting the Transition Team Committee, comprised of community leaders, business owners and senior center representatives, created a list of possible scenarios and/or ideas that could potentially take the senior programs out from under Lewis County government operation successfully. Lengthy discussions took place regarding each of the scenarios/ideas suggested...

9 suggestions were proposed, and the next meeting scheduled for February 15, 2017 at Winlock Senior Center. Topics include guest speakers from two senior program organizations, and developing subcommittees to begin work on suggestions.

Full report at Lewis County Tribune.

As February 14 draws near, the school district bond issue heats up. One reader writes: Local citizens would try to tell me that the upcoming Levy for school improvements should not include a good track and restrooms. Today I still see men and women who stayed in school because of the track program and are in good health because they are still running. Please vote yes for the school levy!

Camp Singing Wind - From the bottom up: We're sharing this article because it's pretty close to our mindset here at Camp Singing Wind.

The Guardian notes: Our atomised communities can heal themselves. Through local initiatives we can regenerate our culture and make politics relevant again.

Especially interesting (to me) were examples like Men’s Sheds, time banking, and technology hubs, very much like Toledo Common Ground (see Incredible Edible in West Yorkshire) and the library (see Rotterdam’s response to library closures in 2011).

Health Corner: Valentine's Day is just around the corner, one more sugar-coated holiday on the calendar. You know the pitfalls, but how much do you really know about sugar? What alternatives satisfy that sweet tooth?

From MindBodyGreen, this post: A Natural Food Chef Shares Her Secrets For Reducing Sugar Intake outlining one woman’s approach including coconut (#2), and honey and maple syrup (#6).

Mark’s Daily Apple provides this detailed list of sugar types and their properties, including how your system “reads” them in his Definitive Guide To Sugar.

Wellness Mama lists the pros and cons of Xylitol, which boasts a GI (Glycemic Index) rating of 7 (on a scale of 100), measures and tastes like white sugar while boasting 40% fewer calories.* Plus: Xylitol-based toothpaste helps remineralize teeth - no kidding! Functional Medicine Practitioner Chris Kresser compares xylitol, sorbitol, and related sugar substitutes to table sugar, listing pros and cons.

*Choose birch sourced and Made In USA, you’ll taste the difference. SmartSweet has data sheets on a variety of alternative sweeteners, and the best bubble gum!
