A reader comments: It is my belief that the Planning Commission puts itself at a disadvantage by stating the vacancy in their ranks must be filled by " ... a citizen of the corporate City limits of Toledo". I personally know a highly educated and forward thinking person of worldly experience that would be a real asset in Toledo's Planning Commission BUT, he lives just outside the 'City limits' and is therefore denied application. There is some great talent missed by having this 'City limits' rule. For example, did you know the most active Common Ground Toledo (CGT) members who have taken an interest in making the downtown planters and gardens in the downtown area itself DO NOT live in the 'City limits'? There are some very caring and valuable Toledo citizens IN Toledo, and outside the 'City limits'. Toledo's loss if it is not seen fit to include them in the Planning Commission application process. Thank you.

~ L.S. Bird-Sonne

Closing February 15:

City of Toledo announces a vacancy on the Planning Commission:

The City of Toledo is seeking one person to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission.  The Planning Commission acts as an advisory body to the City Council on all land use, and comprehensive planning issues.  The Commission is specifically responsible for providing recommendations on subdivisions, zoning, annexation requests, reviewing and approving conditional use permits, approving business license, and is an integral part of the implementation of the Growth Management Act.  The vacancy must be filled by a citizen of the corporate City limits of Toledo. All candidates must be a minimum of 18 years old and a registered voter.

If you are interested in the vacancy on the Toledo Planning Commission, please submit a letter of interest to:  Mayor Steve Dobosh, City of Toledo, PO Box 236, Toledo, Washington 98591 or drop off a letter at Toledo City Hall, 130 North Second Street, Toledo.  If you have additional questions regarding this vacancy, contact Toledo City Hall at (360) 864-4564.

Response to L.S. Bird-Sonne: The Toledo Planning Commission was created in 1978 by Ordinance (laws) of The City Council. At that time all 5 positions had to reside inside the City limits. This Ordinance has been updated in 1999 to allow a citizen outside the city limits to sit on the Planning Commission. Then again it was updated to also add a business owner, who could reside outside the City limits. We value all input to what the current and future of the City of Toledo will look like. All meetings are open to the public for public input as another means to hear what citizens in or outside the city limits have to say or are interested in. Common Ground Toledo (CGT) grew out of Vision:Toledo and is a very valuable asset to Toledo and the greater Toledo area. The current coordinator of CGT does live outside of Toledo, whereas the past resided inside the city. As with all members of Vision:Toledo and where there expertise or interest lies, they are "welcomed". The Mayor is very thankful for all the contributions that is received by the many volunteers in the community - from Lions Club- Senior Advisory Board - Planning Commission Members - Vision:Toledo - sports clubs - and the list goes on and on. This is what makes Toledo a great place to live (inside and outside the city limits).
