Tech Report: MOOC, or Massive Open Online Courses
Whether seeking an accredited degree program or certification for Microsoft, Google and others, distance learning increasingly supplements or replaces conventional brick-and-mortar universities, dissolves barriers of distance and time zones, is a cost-effective option for working folks, families with young children, worker retraining, continuing education, limitless examples.
Wikipedia reports: As MOOCs have evolved, there appear to be two distinct types: those that emphasize the connectivist philosophy, and those that resemble more traditional courses. To distinguish the two, Stephen Downes proposed the terms "cMOOC" and "xMOOC"
Last March Forbes explored the future of MOOC’s, citing rapid advances in knowledge requiring ongoing education; gone are the days one relied upon a college degree as adequate to sustain a decades-long career.
In Washington State, the Center for Online Education features short lists of The Best, and The Most Affordable 4-year Universities including most of the familiar names around the state.
Coursera is one of my favorites with academic courses from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and hundreds more, including free courses.
Udemy is a commercial venture, likewise Coursera, … while edX, Khan Academy, and Stanford Online operate as nonprofits. OpenClassrooms features content from Google, Microsoft, IBM & ZenDesk.
Of course, if you’re seeking knowledge a bit less esoteric, YouTube provides DIY home remedies for your specific needs.
