Health Corner: Exercise
The four pillars* of health are largely within our control - sleep, hydration, nutrition, and exercise. Maintaining healthy levels of each will reduce the risk of today’s Top 3 Killers.
Medical News Today attributes 50% of deaths to three conditions - heart disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory ailments like COPD, bronchitis and asthma; going one step further, they quote The World Cancer Research Fund in estimating “that up to one-third of cancer cases that occur in economically developed countries like the U.S. are related to being overweight, obese, inactive (sedentary), or poor nutrition. These are all preventable.” America’s Health Rankings notes that 2016 marked the first time in 27 years of reporting that cardiovascular deaths increased.
Exercise in any form alleviates stress and boosts metabolism. Having a partner or joining a group adds a social aspect and reinforces commitment to regular workouts. Add music, a step counter or fitness meter, wrap up with a meditation period. Need more incentive? Get a dog (or walk the neighbor's). Grab a CD from the library. Download an app. Sign up online. Chart your progress using the Seinfeld method if that works for you.
Toledo Senior Center hosts 3 different exercise groups, from low-impact, chair-based routines and hand weight workouts to energetic Zumba classes - something for everyone - and they’re not restricted to folks North of 60 years old. Toledo High School offers a protected morning walking environment, and South County Park (Wallace Pond) features a paved three-quarter mile level track. Camp Singing Wind has a variety of dance classes available. If these options don’t appeal to you, Common Ground Toledo and TES PTO will gladly accept your help in their gardens.
If it’s been awhile, easing into it will avert that boot camp shock to your system. Consult your preferred healer or medical professional.
*Stress is often cited as a fifth controllable factor.
One last link on last week’s topic, Insurance vs Health Care: Financial expert Michelle Singletary speaks out on her childhood spent on Medicaid, and how it helped her break the cycle of poverty. Read it all the way through and recognize the working poor before you join the haters online.
