03.25.2016 Friday Column
Review: Amy Archer, Toledo Fire Department photog, captured in words and pictures details of Toledo High School’s staged mock accident, funeral and trial on Friday, the culmination of Traffic Safety Week March 7-11:
“The event started around 1 p.m. outside on the track at the high school; it had been raining really hard but let up right as everything started (which made for a muddy track). Life Flight or Airlift was supposed to make its way down and do a flight with the critical patients but it was not clear enough to make it in. I believe it was only Junior and Seniors that came to watch. I’m thinking it was about an hour and a half, so ended around 2:30 pm.

“Organizations that participated in the mock crash were WSP, Toledo Police Dept, Toledo Fire Dept, Brown Mortuary Service, Lewis County Sheriff's Office, the Corner’s and Prosecutor’s Office. I believe the students of the “Two Hands On the Wheel” group from the high school were the ones that put the whole thing together with the help of Principal Martin Huffman and Matt Schlecht, Deputy with Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
“Nine Fire Department volunteers participated with one engine and two ambulances. The kids who participated from the high school were 6 girls and 2 boys.
“The Fire Department used the JAWs of Life (an extrication tool) to open a door of one of the wrecked cars to export a patient.  They may have used other things as well.
“The Chronicle was on hand and did a pretty good write up on March 12, 2016!
“I believe the “Two Hands on the Wheel” kids did a really great job making all this possible. It really opened up the eyes of everyone involved.”
