A note from the desk of the Toledo Columnist...

As April 1 draws near, I celebrate the one-year anniversary of my return to Life in the wee hours after midnight when my labored breathing failed me.

Recalling my Christmas Day trip to the ER with The Otter, I got myself out of the house five steps at a time, and into the Ford, waiting and willing my searing lungs to respond to earlier third, fourth, fifth breathing treatments.
I was unable to call for help. I could not speak. I was alone. I surrendered.

My struggle evaporated. Peace overcame me. I felt weightless.

And just as suddenly, I was once more on the front seat struggling for each breath, wondering why I was returned to this fight for life, what purpose could be served in being returned to this strife. And I recalled scolding a friend of mine who has breathing issues for driving herself to the ER when her oxygen levels plummet. A thought emerged through the memory: if she could do it, maybe, just maybe, it could be done.

Text To 9-1-1 did not yet exist in Lewis County - still doesn’t - and I have made it my mission to bring this county astride the I-5 corridor between major port cities into this millennium by putting Text To 9-1-1 on the fast track. mil.wa.gov/ Emergency Management Division reports:  Wahkiakum County recently (as of October 2016) joined Clark, Thurston, Clallam, Jefferson, Pacific, Snohomish, Kitsap, Grant and Spokane counties as the first counties to offer the Text-to-911 service. Wahkiakum County is using EMedia for their solution and have confirmed the ability to transfer to/from CRESA (in Clark County) and their Oregon partners as well as to Pacific County. (Map link here of OR & WA counties already using text-to-9-1-1 as of August 2016, and coming soon. Notice Lewis County is not highlighted.)

LC Commissioner Stamper graciously listened to my tale after the last Toledo City Council meeting, promised a response, and a voicemail arrived from the local dispatch center within 24 hours, outlining their reasons why they “didn’t want to introduce too much, too fast.”

Every emergency service depends on communications. And it’s especially critical in a disaster.* Since arriving here in 2011, my breathing waned bit by bit. Text & email became my primary means of exchange. Last April my very breath ceased entirely for a period known only to the Divine.

That a Lewis County 9-1-1 operator hung up on my frantic call several months later when an intruder was reported and I fell silent - she declared me uncooperative - only strengthens my sense of purpose.

This Saturday I celebrate Spring, a manifestation of renewed life in this, my new home. I rejoice in newfound friends and supporters and simple conversation. There’s no denying my outlook on What Matters has undergone a paradigm shift. Few get the reprieve I have been bestowed. And I will not squander it.

Time was, April Fools Day was a calculated contest to out-do last year’s prank - I had a collection of increasingly elaborate schemes to my name. Now April 1 marks my Second Chance.

Join me in my campaign to get Text to 9-1-1 in Lewis County - sooner than later.

*Following the Nisqually quake in February 2001, every one of my 30+ workers phoned in as service was restored throughout the Metro Seattle Tacoma area. Ditto September 11 that same year.
