Since 1983, the United States has observed the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, spreading the message that communities must be more proactive in preventing child abuse and neglect. The pinwheel is a symbol of a happy childhood and is meant to convey that every child deserves the chance to be raised in a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment.

Farmers Insurance- Cyndi Philbrook Agency posted:

From preventchildabuse.org: There are three components of the “Help Great Childhoods Happen” campaign:
  • Help Great Childhoods Happen Digital Campaign: Throughout April we’ll demonstrate how we can all support great childhoods and promote the 30 things you should know to help make great childhoods happen.
  • Wear Blue Day: On Friday, April 5th, individuals and organizations across the US will band together to make a visible commitment to preventing child abuse and helping make great childhoods happen nationwide by wearing blue.
  • Pinwheels & Pinwheel Gardens: The pinwheel has come to serve as the national symbol of the great childhoods we want for all children. Throughout April, planting pinwheel gardens in honor of children in communities nationwide demonstrates how we can all support great childhoods and promote ways to help great childhoods happen.

Starts With A Bang posted: 6 Supermassive Questions On The Eve Of The Event Horizon Telescope's Big Announcement
Picture
Caption: The most-visualized black hole of all, as illustrated in the movie Interstellar, shows a predicted event horizon fairly accurately for a very specific class of rotating black holes. Deep within the gravitational well, time passes at a different rate for observers than it does for us far outside of it. The Event Horizon Telescope is expected to reveal the emissions surrounding a black hole's event horizon, directly, for the first time. INTERSTELLAR / R. HURT / CALTECH

“3.) Is a black hole’s event horizon circular, as predicted, or does it take on a different shape? Although all physically realistic black holes are expected to spin to some degree, the event horizon’s shape is predicted to be indistinguishable from that of a perfect sphere.

But other shapes are possible. Some objects bulge along their equators when they rotate, creating a shape known as an oblate spheriod, such as planet Earth. Others creep up along their rotational axes, resulting in a football-like shape known as a prolate spheroid. If General Relativity is correct, a sphere is what we anticipate, but there’s no substitute for making the critical observations ourselves. When the images come out on April 10, we should have our answers.”

On April 10, one of the longest-awaited advances will finally be upon us, as the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration will reveal their very first image of a black hole’s event horizon. It should test General Relativity as never before, including measuring the black hole’s event horizon, its sphericity, the radiation coming from around it, and many other properties.

What’s the full suite of what our first direct image of a black hole might teach us? Come get the amazing science behind a spectacular discovery we’ve all been waiting for!
