"By deliberately making or selling e-liquid products that look like prescription cough syrups, these companies are putting adults and children at risk of nicotine poisoning. The products are being designed in ways that make them falsely appear to be ingestible. These actions are egregious...

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued warning letters to Undisputed Worldwide and EZ Fumes for manufacturing, selling and/or distributing nicotine-containing e-liquids used in e-cigarettes with labeling and/or advertising that cause the products to misleadingly appear to be ingestible by imitating prescription cough syrups...

FDA: CVM Updates
Animal Drug Safety Communication: FDA Alerts Pet Owners and Veterinarians About Potential for Neurologic Adverse Events Associated with Certain Flea and Tick Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners and veterinarians to be aware of the potential for neurologic adverse events in dogs and cats when treated with drugs that are in the isoxazoline class.

Since these products have obtained their respective FDA approvals, data received by the agency as part of its routine post-marketing activities indicates that some animals receiving Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica have experienced adverse events such as muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations.

The FDA is working with manufacturers of isoxazoline products to include new label information to highlight neurologic events because these events were seen consistently across the isoxazoline class of products.

Washington State Dept. of Natural Resources announced: Call When Needed Contractors
DNR Offers Wildland Fire Safety Training to Contractors
Call When Needed Contractors encouraged to attend

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering fire safety training for people interested in providing wildland fire suppression resources.

Contractors only need to attend one of the two sessions.

When:
Wednesday, April 17 at 9 a.m.
OR
Saturday, April 27 at 9 a.m.

Where:
DNR’s Pacific Cascade Region Office
601 Bond Road
Castle Rock, WA

RSVP to Jeanette Foster at jeanette.foster@dnr.wa.gov

The training is to help people understand how to provide fire suppression resources to wildland firefighting efforts. It will cover basic requirements, basic fire behavior and firefighting methods, and fire safety training.

Fire Suppression Resource Availability Agreements, commonly referred to as ”Call When Needed” Agreements, are preseason agreements used to support or engage in wildland firefighting. These agreements serve as an organized way to show DNR what private resources are available for hire within a specific geographic area or for their service specialty.

DNR uses these preseason agreements to establish a pool of qualified, trained, and available vendors who can provide equipment and services in a timely fashion, upon request.

For people who want to learn how to provide resources for wildland fire suppression, go to the Provide Equipment and Services for Fire Suppression page on DNR’s website.

When homeowners do not manage codling moth in their backyard trees, 80 to 95% of the fruit can become “wormy.” In the apple-producing areas of Washington State, homeowners are legally responsible (RCW 15.09) to control this pest in host trees on their properties. And yes, there are special apple tree “police” that can and do enforce this regulation, especially if the backyard tree is close to a commercial orchard. In addition, Spokane and Lincoln Counties and most of western Washington are designated as apple maggot quarantine areas. The quarantine prohibits the movement of homegrown or foraged fruit from these counties in an attempt to stop the spread of the apple maggot, another serious pest. You have probably seen the quarantine signs along I-90. The rationale behind these state laws is to protect fruit growers from economic losses caused by invasive pests. Agriculture is Washington State’s number one industry and commercially grown apples contribute $2.4 billion to our state's economy.

Before you plant your dream small orchard, please read this fact sheet:

Wide Open Spaces posted: Did You Know That Opossums Eat Virtually All The Ticks In Your Yard?
Excerpt: A few years ago, scientists wanted to learn about the part different mammals and other animals play in the spread of the ticks and Lyme disease. One study of six species of animals (white footed mice, chipmunks, squirrels, opossums, veerys, and catbirds) tested the creatures by exposing them to ticks.
Picture
When it was all said and done, one of them showed a remarkable skill: the opossum was amazingly good at removing them... and eating them! Up to 5,000 in a season...
