A visit to Toledo’s Food Bank earlier this month highlighted 30 years of service to the community. Shawn Fox, a high school student, started this resource as an Eagle Scout project March 1987. His mother served the operation in various capacities, passing on in 2015. Debbie Shipley now occupies the big chair, overseeing the business end of things, coordinating with other area food banks and the USDA Commodities Program to ensure those in need get the basics.
Shipley noted the Honor Society sends the girls one scheduled Food Bank Friday, the boys on the next. With a core of 8 regular volunteer members, and “a deal we couldn’t pass up” on shelves from the former Sunshine Liquidators, she continues to upgrade and streamline the operation. Local food drives and club sponsored events combine with regular donations from area retailers to ensure nobody need go hungry in this community.
Shipley notes recent emergence of localized sponsored food banks outside the coalition network has some clients believing these venues have replaced the Toledo Food Bank. While applauding the spirit, Shipley warns “there’s much more to (running) an operation like this one than filling a few bags with groceries.” She wants to get the word out that Toledo Food Bank will remain an established resource at its location behind City Hall.
Toledo Food Bank open 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. second and fourth Fridays monthly behind City Hall.
