Tech Tuesday: Recent Critical Error RSOD incidents (Why Monday’s Column Went Missing)

This week’s tech report arises from Monday morning’s exploration into a mysterious RSOD - Red Screen Of Death - on The Otter’s normally complacent Daily Driver, rendering mouse and keyboard useless and audibly repeating a warning while displaying a contact phone number.

One targeted user wrote: My Window Edge show me a supposed Critical Error
I have received a Message - Red Screen Warning - 866-847-7830
How can I remove it?
Thanks!

QUOTE
Hi all,
I'm on the MSN Engineering team and would love help if anyone encounter this again. We've been tracking this since it started in mid February…

Blame-storming in the thread linked above points variously to MSN “malvertizing” or browser hijackers or Adobe Flash issues, recommending a third-party app such as Malwarebytes to identify and quarantine the PUP’s - (Potentially Unwanted Programs) extensions. (This is what we did; download clean apps from Ninite.com)

TinySoftware.com outlined detailed instructions for intrepid DIYer’s here.

If in doubt, contact your tech support person.
