CDC: It’s Lyme Disease Awareness Month
Did you know that infected ticks can spread Lyme disease? This Lyme Disease Awareness Month, learn how you can protect yourself and your family from tick bites. https://bit.ly/2GRtOLM
FDA: It’s Healthy Vision Month!
Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) announced yesterday:
*A reader responded with a heartbreaking story: (OSPI) how about we put actual therapists in our schools? Ones that are educated to handle situations that teachers and staff may not be able to. My child was bullied in a (WA) school and tried to tell adults, just to have the bullying worsen! Now my beautiful daughter will never be older than 13.
You want these kids to test well. But you want robots, your tests are failing the youth. Stress is making them anxious, depressed, and mean. You can post all you want about advocating for mental health, but think about this: kids need to grow, not be robots.

Mount St Helens Institute reported:
Congratulations Volcano Naturalists! This group just completed a 12 week, 40 hour class on everything Mount St. Helens. They learned early eruptive history, flora and fauna, visited the Ape Caves, and spent time with Cowlitz elders to learn the cultural history of the mountain. Congratulations on your accomplishment! (And shout out to Vancouver Fred Meyer for the epic volcano cake.)

Health Corner: New Blood Pressure Guidelines - Hype vs Hope
(Reprinted by request from Health Corner in The Other Toledo 12.07.2017)
Recent guidelines lowering acceptable blood pressure numbers triggered a spate of articles explaining how maintaining a low systolic figure factors in heart disease & stroke rates.
A recent New York Times article Q&A addressed why the new “normal” puts around half of all Americans in the higher risk category, how to calculate your own numbers, and what forces impact your BP:
For most people, a typical low-salt diet does not alter blood pressure very much. Reducing sodium might help if you can manage extremely low levels.*
Functional Medicine Practitioner Chris Kresser is one of today’s health mythbusters. This series he did on salt may have you rethinking its bad press as a dangerous element in your diet.
Beyond normal fluctuations in your blood pressure throughout each 24-hour day (nighttime readings are typically lower) and medications (antihistamines & cold
remedies, and steroids like Prednisone),
Other studies point to poor technique as the culprit in elevated readings. NPR posted a checklist last month for accurately achieving a reliable reading, while noting few health care workers followed these steps, many having no idea how failure to abide by them skews results. Has anyone performing this common test ever measured the circumference of your arm to ensure accurate results?
This information is not new. SunTechMed, maker of medical devices, reported in 2012 that a study from the American Heart Association originally published in 2004 addressed these very guidelines.
Since pharmaceutical remedies are costly and frequently trigger side effects including conflicts with existing medications, careful considerations of factors within your control - diet & exercise, lifestyle changes & stress reduction, insisting your healthcare professional follow AHA guidelines for performing blood pressure testing - can avert unnecessary treatment and assure accurate records.
UPDATE 05.02.2019: In light of recent recalls of blood pressure medicines tainted by Nitrosamine impurities, including N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), and N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) which are probable human carcinogens (a substance that could cause cancer), and N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA), a potential human carcinogen, seem to be expanding exponentially. Some distributors are on record stating they will recall only those (lots of medication) registering levels of nitrosamines above the FDA’s acceptable levels.
It’s your right.
*09.21.2017 Health Corner: Salt + Fat cited findings that sharply reducing salt intake can backfire, blamed for serious chronic conditions like diabetes.
