Annie Jones shared this from (her daughter) Mila: “I’m selling milkweed seed packets to help bring back the monarch butterflies who are disappearing. Monarchs are disappearing due to genetically engineered crops and pesticides which make it so that milkweed does not grow as abundantly as it used to. Milkweed is where the monarch butterflies lay their eggs because milkweed is the only plant that the caterpillars eat.
The suggested donation for each seed packet is $2. The money will go to my school so that we can get new learning tools. Please get a seed packet (or more!) and plant it to help fund my school and bring back the monarch butterflies! Thank you!”

Orders for PU at today’s Toledo Thursday Market Mother's Day Plant Sale are mounting fast.

PBS.org: FDA To End Program That Hid Millions of Reports on Faulty Medical Devices

May 5, 2019
The Food and Drug Administration announced it is shutting down its controversial “alternative summary reporting” program and ending its decades-long practice of allowing medical device makers to conceal millions of reports of harm and malfunctions from the general public.

The agency said it will open past records to the public within weeks.

A Kaiser Health News investigation in March revealed that the obscure program was vast, collecting 1.1 million reports since 2016. The program, which began about 20 years ago, was so little-known that forensic medical device experts and even a recent FDA commissioner were unaware of its existence.

FDA spokeswoman Angela Stark said the agency will also end “alternative summary reporting” exemptions still in place for makers of implantable cardiac defibrillators, pacemakers and tooth implants. The FDA has said the program was originally designed to allow for more efficient internal review of well-known risks.

Governor Jay Inslee: Inslee announces opposition to two gas projects in Washington
May 8, 2019

Gov. Jay Inslee today signed a bill banning hydraulic fracking for oil and natural gas within Washington state. Immediately following the signing, Inslee spoke with the media to discuss how the emerging science emphasizing the urgency of climate change and the environmental impacts of natural gas make clear the state’s efforts and future investments in energy infrastructure should focus on clean, renewable sources rather than fossil fuels.

The governor said such thinking should apply to current proposals to construct significant, long-term new natural gas infrastructure in Washington state.
…

“I cannot in good conscience support continued construction of a liquefied natural gas plant in Tacoma or a methanol production facility in Kalama. In the early days of both projects, I said they could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as we transition to cleaner energy sources, but I am no longer convinced that locking in these multidecadal infrastructure projects are sufficient to accomplishing what's necessary…

Common Ground Toledo ISO* Youthful Garden Help

We have several "older citizens" living in the Toledo area who have expressed a desire/need for younger fingers, backs and legs to help them in their yard/gardens. If you know of reliable, helpful, kind, considerate young women or men (may be high school students) who are willing workers...we can make some introductions. Each of these "older citizens" are willing to pay for the services of the young women and men. We are talking about weed pulling, small plant removal and planting, some yard upkeep...not heavy duty landscaping projects. PM for contact and more information. Thanks !

UPDATE: Common Ground Toledo There will be a sign-up list with questions at the Toledo Thursday Market (today). Di Morgan will help make the connections/introductions between the "older citizens" and the younger workers. This isn't a bid for Landscaping companies to do full blown yard work...but rather a way for young workers to earn a bit of cash while helping out the older folks who live in the Toledo area. Many yards with flower beds just need a couple hours of work every 2 weeks or so. Some may want a young worker to run a weed eater, or possibly even mow the lawn every week or two. Please list what jobs you feel capable to do on the sign-up sheet. Thank you for this wonderful response.

And that’s how it’s done in Toledo!

Health Corner: Sugar

Mother's Day is just around the corner, one more sugar-coated holiday on the calendar. You know the pitfalls, but how much do you really know about sugar? What alternatives satisfy that sweet tooth?

From MindBodyGreen, this post: A Natural Food Chef Shares Her Secrets For Reducing Sugar Intake outlining one woman’s approach including coconut (#2), and honey and maple syrup (#6).

Mark’s Daily Apple provides this detailed list of sugar types and their properties, including how your system “reads” them in his Definitive Guide To Sugar.

Wellness Mama lists the pros and cons of Xylitol, which boasts a GI (Glycemic Index) rating of 7 (on a scale of 100), measures and tastes like white sugar while boasting 40% fewer calories.* Plus: Xylitol-based toothpaste helps remineralize teeth - no kidding! Functional Medicine Practitioner Chris Kresser compares xylitol, sorbitol, and related sugar substitutes to table sugar, listing pros and cons.

Stevia is listed as 100 times sweeter than table sugar, typically sold blended with other sweeteners like erythritol or cane sugar, although Trader Joe’s has a small 1-ounce spice jar container for around $10 equivalent to 600+ teaspoons of granulated sugar. Even the blends seem extraordinarily sweet by comparison.

*Choose birch sourced and Made In USA, you’ll taste the difference. GlobalSweet has data sheets on a variety of alternative sweeteners!

Mount St Helens Institute posted yesterday: Today in 1980. 10 days until the eruption.
Picture
Explosions resumed after a two week break. Steam and ash plumes reached 13,000 feet. The bulge continued to push outwards. Earthquake activity remained about the same. Since March 20, 2,550 earthquakes larger than magnitude 3.0 have been recorded, including 291 larger than 4.0. According to a USFS spokesman, "We've had more quakes above 4.0 here in the past few weeks than
California has had in the past ten years!" Due to renewed activity, USGS geologist Don Mullineaux cancelled a town meeting in Toutle. The meeting was planned to address concerns of local residents about the ongoing crisis.
