FTC: June 10, 2019 - One Ring Scam Returns With A New Twist
A while back, we warned you about the “one ring” scam. That’s when you get a phone call from a number you don’t know, and the call stops after just one ring. The scammer is hoping you’ll call back, because it’s really an international toll number and will appear as a charge on your phone bill — with most of the money going to the scammer. Well, the scam is back with a vengeance, and the FCC just issued a new advisory about it. Read the FCC’s advisory for more detail, but the advice from both agencies remains the same if you get one of these calls: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/…/get-one-ring-call-dont-call-…

2019 FIRE SEASON - WASHINGTON STATE: With climbing temperatures, no precipitation in the forecast and most of western Washington facing drought level conditions already, we are no longer awaiting Fire Season... it’s here.
Washington State Department of Natural Resources posted a video: link here.

Lewis County Solid Waste Utility: Open House June 15 - Compost Demonstration Site
MEDFORD, Ore. - Throughout the United States and Europe beekeepers have been reporting annual hive losses of 20 percent or higher. One in four bee species in the U.S. is at risk of extinction.
On Wednesday, a local Medford couple had a tree that has been in their front yard for decades removed due to an upcoming road widening project. That tree is also home to around 80,000 honey bees. Instead of killing the bees or destroying their habitat they contacted an arborist that worked with a beekeeper to relocate the entire hive; an 8 ft. 500-600 lb. hive.

Tech Tuesday: How to Build a DIY Air Conditioner in Minutes for Less Than $10
Reprinted from July 2018
I couldn’t decide whether this project belonged in Tech Tuesday (even though it’s very low-tech) or in Thursday’s Health Column. Since it’s hotter than blazes, I opted for sooner than later.
Even healthy folks can protect themselves from the toll high temps take on their system; those with health conditions, advanced years, and the very young are more susceptible to extreme heat.
The Mayo Clinic explains why hot weather puts extra stress on your body:
“To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate. … Under normal conditions, your skin, blood vessels and perspiration level adjust to the heat. But these natural cooling systems may fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures and humidity for too long …”
