Press Release:
Learn to build hugelkultur, make worm compost bin
For Immediate Release June 15, 2018

The WSU Lewis County Master Recycler Composter volunteers will host an open house at their Compost Demonstration site at the Central Transfer Station in Centralia on Saturday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tours of the site and two classes will be featured.
Beginning at 10 a.m. volunteers will demonstrate how to build a hugelkultur, a composting raised bed. Hugelkultur, which is German for “hill culture”, is a great alternative to burning branches and tree debris.
“This simple bed can transform your dirt and woody debris into an active soil by harnessing the power of decomposition, much like a nurse logs in a forest,” explained Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the Lewis County Solid Waste Utility, which operates the transfer stations and works with the MRC volunteers to maintain the demonstration site.
Hugelkultur mounds retain moisture, help property owners avoid off-site hauling of wood debris, provides long-term enrichment to soils, is inexpensive to build and is easy to manage.
A worm composting class will begin at 11 a.m. Class participants will learn how worms can eat kitchen waste and make a great medium to add nutrients to their soil. They will also build a worm bin – complete with red wiggler worms – to take home, so they can immediately start composting. The worm bin supplies are limited to one per family, while supplies last.
In addition to the classes, volunteers will be on hand to provide tours of the compost demonstration area and the worm shed, and answer questions about recycling, composting and becoming an MRC volunteer.
Anyone with questions about the open house may call 360-740-1216 or email art.fuller@lewiscountywa.gov.

Summer Camps Coordinator Annie Jones invites:
Toledo Friends! Want to be involved in making summer adventure camps magical and awesome for kids in our community? Here’s how you can help:
There are 4 kids signed up for camps who are in need of partial scholarships and one in need of a full scholarship. Can you help?
We need a few more guest volunteers Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week in July to come read a script/story to the kids at 1:30-3 or assist with a craft or field game (supplies and instructions provided) from 3-3:30. Can you help?
See Details here
The supportive response of this community last summer is the reason MAP was able to get rolling and provide summer and after school programs for so many kids throughout the year, including those in financial need! Let’s do it again - this time we’re giving kids the chance to experience a taste of real summer adventure camp, getting outside, active, and engaged with their world in meaningful ways, learning lots while having fun and making memories!
Thanks in advance.
