TES PTO toasted:
Summer is in full swing and we are enjoying the laid back schedule and free time. I just wanted to take a minute to showcase the community support and effort at the school garden. Club continues: kids and parents have committed their time. Teachers, families and volunteers are signed up to water every week of the summer! Thanks so far to Alicia Luna Ortiz family and Suzanne Kasner family. Jeff Landrum just set up irrigation for the berries and perennial rows. Jake Dailey posted a wonderful drone shot from a few months ago during a garden work party. Paul Oberg delivered more much needed wood chips. A maintenance staff member came down on very short notice on a Sunday to prep the parking lot so K Dub Shipp can grade and rock the lot tomorrow. Sorry for the long post. I hope you made it to the end. All this during the last few weeks of summer. This community rocks and continues to amaze!

NIH: NIH study finds long-term increased risk of cancer death following common treatment for hyperthyroidism
July 1, 2019 - The study, led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, was published July 1, 2019 in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Excerpt: According to the researchers, in the United States, about 1.2% of the population has hyperthyroidism, and women are much more likely to develop the condition than men. Therefore, the findings for breast cancer mortality are particularly relevant for the large population of women treated for hyperthyroidism, Dr. Kitahara said.

Axios reports: USDA suspends honeybee colony research
July 6, 2019 - USDA has temporarily suspended data collection on the Obama-era Honey Bee Colonies report, the only federally overseen national survey that tracks honeybee losses, CNN reports.
Excerpt - Why it matters: "Some scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollinators like bees," the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service reports. Last winter's honeybee colony loss was the highest in 13 years, according to WashPost.

WDFW: FISHING RULE CHANGE - Chehalis River and tributaries to close to fishing
July 2, 2019 - Chehalis River and tributaries to close to fishing
Action: Closes Chehalis River, South Fork Chehalis River, North Fork Newaukum River, South Fork Newaukum River and Skookumchuck River to fishing.
Effective date: Immediately until further notice.
Species affected: All species.
Location: Chehalis River, South Fork Chehalis River, North Fork Newaukum River, South Fork Newaukum River and Skookumchuck River.
Reason for action: Streams and rivers where spring Chinook hold and stage through the summer are experiencing lower than normal stream flows. Spring Chinook hold and stage in the Chehalis River, South Fork Chehalis River, North and South forks of the Newaukum Rivers and the Skookumchuck River. Low stream flows decrease holding and staging refuges and elevate vulnerability and pressure on these Chinook. Any encounters of spring Chinook could subject these fish to stress, injury, or death.
Additional information: Please see the 2019-20 Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet or visit the WDFW website at wdfw.wa.gov for additional fishing opportunities and regulations.
Information contact: Chad Herring, Willapa Bay/Grays Harbor Fishery Policy Lead Region 6, 360-249-4628, ext. 299.
