National Weather Service Seattle: Rain Moving In Tuesday Night
Picture

Cliff Mass Weather and Climate Blog: Winter in July

July 8, 2019 - A look at the latest enhanced infrared weather satellite imagery is a shocker, more reminiscent of mid-winter than mid-summer (see below).

The image shows a huge weather system with plenty of clouds, rain, and wind over the eastern Pacific-- a system that is heading our way.
Picture
In a normal year, our weather improves rapidly after July 5th.  But not this year. In fact, it is quite possible than many Northwest locations (particularly over NW Washington) will have their wettest July in decades.

Precipitation will move in late Tuesday, and Wednesday should be wet.

FDA: Salmonella Uganda Likely Linked to Whole, Fresh Papayas, June 2019
Consumers in all states warned to avoid Cavi brand whole, fresh papayas distributed by Agroson’s LLC
Picture
July 5, 2019 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Uganda illnesses likely linked to whole, fresh papayas.

The epidemiological and traceback information collected thus far in the investigation indicates that Agroson’s LLC of Bronx, New York, is the exclusive distributor of the imported papayas that likely made consumers from this outbreak sick. The papayas are sold under the brand name Cavi. To date, there have been no positive product samples.

Of the 71 illnesses, 69 have been reported in six states in the Northeast. One patient from Florida who was reported ill had traveled to Connecticut before becoming ill. Another patient from Texas who was also reported ill had traveled to New York before becoming ill.

The FDA has consulted with the firm on the possibility of a recall. Should that happen, the FDA will update this advisory, including any recalled products, as more information becomes available.

The evidence does not indicate that papayas from other distributors are implicated at this time, and FDA is narrowing its recommendations to consumers, restaurants, retailers, importers, suppliers and distributors, limited to Cavi brand whole, fresh papayas. The FDA will continue its investigation to try to determine the root cause of the contamination of the implicated brand.

Recommendations - For Consumers, Restaurants, and Retailers:
Consumers in all states should not eat any Cavi brand whole, fresh papayas and should throw them away. If consumers are unable to determine the brand of papayas, they should be thrown away. Retailers, restaurants, and other food service providers in all states should not serve or sell whole, fresh papayas under the Cavi brand, which is distributed by Agroson’s LLC.

Consumers no longer need to avoid whole, fresh papayas, with the exception of Cavi brand papayas.

Mount St Helens Institute: 10 Mile Awesome Hike
Perhaps the most spectacular trail system in the Mount St. Helens area, our challenging 10-mile Awesome Hike from Johnston Ridge Observatory winds through the heart of the blast zone in the Mount Margaret Backcountry, past Coldwater Peak, and along south Coldwater Ridge. You’ll see spectacular wildflower displays, stunning views of St. Helens Lake and Spirit Lake, and twisted logging equipment: all reminders of the destructive and renewing powers of this great volcano.

Sign up for our next Awesome Hike on July 27th at bit.ly/AwesomeHike!

The Cat's Meow Spay, Neuter & Adoption Project: Become A Supporting Member!*

Hearts, smileys and thumbs up are nice, but consider being a supporter and pledge a small $5/monthly donation.

Just click on the little "Donate" button thingy below.
And A HUGE THANK YOU to those who already have!

PLEASE GIVE SO WE CAN KEEP HELPING
Please take 5 to give 5. It just takes 5 minutes...or less....to sign up with PayPal to pledge $5 a month. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr…

The Cat's Meow has faithfully served SW Washington for 10 years. We have helped CLOSE TO 10 THOUSAND people and cats with rescue, adoption, transport to other no-kill rescues, low-cost spay/neuter, emergency vet care, supplies, training, referrals and more.

Yet we are still struggling day to day to stay up and running.

During the first few years we (I) took in every kitten and cat that anyone asked me to, spending tens of thousands of my personal dollars to care for them.....to the point that the bank decided they wanted my house more than they thought I needed it. I thought that would be my undoing and that I would close The Cat's Meow, but I kept going because the thought of how many kittens and cats would be euthanized if I quit was unbearable.

Here it is....10 years since The Cat's Meow sprung up from an idea and a trap....and we have only 6 regular monthly supporters. They can't do it alone.

OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE 1,000 like-minded cat people pledging their support and belief in what we do. All we ask is just $5 a month....less than the cost of one espresso or trip through a fast food drive through. :-)

Pledge now!! Spread the word!! Help us reach this goal by August 26th - the official date we registered as an NPO ten years ago.
It is extremely difficult to focus on what needs to be done for the organization when constantly struggling to pay for facility rent, utilities, vehicle insurance, phone, gas, maintenance, food, litter, cleaning supplies, vet bills, medicine, etc.

YOUR SUPPORT MEANS THE WORLD TO US AND ALLOWS US TO CONTINUE AND DO EVEN MORE.
THANK YOU!

PS PayPal button has an option to make monthly donations...not sure if Facebook button has the same option.

*Loyal supporter since 2013. Join me now.

Tech Tuesday: Editor Favorites

Woody on Windows: With Patch Tuesday arriving (today), make sure you temporarily block Windows Update
If you want to get the latest patches as soon as they’re out, you needn’t do a thing. Microsoft has undoubtedly rigged your machine already so it’ll install the patches the minute they come rolling out the Automatic Update chute. All I ask is that you tell us of any problems you encounter on AskWoody.com.
…
In practice, Microsoft is actively pushing Win10 1803 machines onto 1903. Many of us would like to give 1903 more time to age before making the leap.

groovyPost: Apple iTunes Might Be on Life Support, but it isn’t Dead
June 25, 2019 - The rumors started in May and were confirmed in June. After nearly 20 years, Apple iTunes received last rites and was preparing to head to the digital grave in the cloud this fall. In its place, Apple had decided to introduce three new apps, Music, Apple TV, and Podcasts.

Except none of this is true, at least not in the sincerest of terms. For Windows users, iTunes isn’t going anywhere– at least not anytime soon. For Mac users, the story is a little bit more confusing, but I’ll do my best to explain.
