Ash Valley Farm asks: Have you heard of serviceberries?!
Although they are native to North America, I had never even heard of them before buying one from the garden center earlier this year. They have been a big hit, especially with this guy! Serviceberry taste similar to a sweet blueberry, although the texture is a bit more grainy.

Vancouver Sun: B.C. Wildfire Damage So Far in 2019 Just One Percent of 2018's Total

Since April 1, 466 fires have been recorded but just 11,568 hectares burned in the province.
Picture
Caption: Fire danger is low over the southern half of the province, with a pocket of extreme fire danger in the northwest. PNG

The area consumed by wildfires in the province so far this season is less than one per cent of the area burned in each of the past two summers, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

That’s down from 2,117 fires and 1,354,284 hectares burned last year, the worst on record. Last year at this time, fires had destroyed more than four times as much forest, according to wildfire service spokeswoman Kyla Fraser.

Washington State ATG: AG Ferguson Argues Court Should Force Trump Administration To Stop Mistreating Immigrant Children

July 10, 2019 - Coalition of attorneys general file brief supporting restraining order against the Trump Administration

OLYMPIA — Attorney General Bob Ferguson today joined 19 other attorneys general in support of a lawsuit seeking to force the Trump Administration to provide safe, sanitary conditions for immigrant children it has detained.

In their amicus — or friend of the court — brief, filed today in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the attorneys general assert that the Administration’s treatment is in violation of a long-standing court-approved settlement that requires the federal government to meet minimum standards when detaining immigrant children, including safe and sanitary conditions and prompt release or placement.

WSDA: New Apple Maggot Signs Bring Renewed Awareness To An Old Problem

7/10/2019 - News Release
OLYMPIA -- The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) in collaboration with the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission and the Washington Department of Transportation completed the installation of several new apple maggot quarantine signs last month.
Picture
The project concludes two years of work to create an updated design for the apple maggot quarantine road signs, revise apple maggot quarantine sign placement, remove old, out-of-place signs, and install the newly designed signs.

The new red, white and black signs were designed to be more eye-catching than older signs, with the aim of stopping the transport of homegrown fruit – especially apples – out of apple maggot quarantine areas into pest-free areas.

“Apple maggots are poor fliers,” Jim Marra, WSDA pest program manager, said. “The largest contributor to the spread of apple maggot is human movement of the pest.” For example, someone from a quarantined county in Western Washington may bring infested apples to Eastern Washington on a camping trip. WSDA is hopeful the new signs will help stop these quarantine violations.

The first step to abiding by the apple maggot quarantine is knowing whether you are in a quarantined area or not. WSDA now has an online interactive apple maggot quarantine map where the public can enter an address and determine whether it is in a quarantined or pest-free area of the state

Apple maggot was first detected in Washington in 1980. It spread rapidly along the I-5 corridor and throughout Western Washington, eventually making its way into several Eastern Washington counties as well.

Despite the spread of the pest, most of the state’s main apple-growing areas have very low levels of pest or remain pest-free thanks to WSDA trapping and monitoring efforts and work from local county pest boards to manage the pest when it is found in an area.

Combined state, local and industry efforts have also prevented apple maggot from ever being detected in commercial apples, which is critical to Washington’s iconic apple industry. If apple maggots were found in commercial apples, it would have devastating impacts on the ability to export Washington’s top crop, which is valued at over $1 billion annually.

Visit WSDA’s website at agr.wa.gov/applemaggot for more information about apple maggot and the apple maggot quarantine.

Toledo Senior Center: Where Is The Annual Cheese Day Second Time Around Sale?
Community support has been outstanding for 2nd Saturday Pancake Breakfasts, community-wide themed dinners & entertainment, holiday bazaars and other events, and particularly for Silent Auctions, staged every two months. Both donors & bidders have joined to make sure Toledo Senior Center meets their independent obligations.

Due to the popularity and success of these Silent Auctions, and to the enormous volunteer hours and efforts invested into one annual tradition, Toledo Senior Center voted to suspend the 2019 Second Time Around Garage Sale held during Cheese Days weekend.

Because Toledo Senior Center operates on the Toledo-centric philosophy of Giving Back, it was suggested that folks wishing to donate new and nearly-new goods to a worthy cause look close to home.

Toledo Community Library, another local non-profit operation, likewise holds three fundraisers annually - Book & Bake sales - to “Keep The Lights On” and cover their bills, in addition to ever-present sales racks with DVD’s, box games and of course, books. Their single-brew hot drink station is entirely self-supporting by dropping your dollar (or more) in the canister.

Their Cheese Days Book & Bake Sale has conveniently been expanded this year to include - wait for it - a Yard Sale at the back of building on Saturday, July 13. So you can still donate or score a great new-to-you treasure while supporting one of Toledo’s terrific volunteers.

Quiet please - a few housekeeping items:
  • Items may be delivered day of sale, on Saturday morning July 13. No early drops.
  • Price tags strongly encouraged - unmarked goods subject to “by donation.”
  • Remaining items to be donated to A Second Time Around Thrift Store benefitting Lewis County Senior Centers, so the Giving Back continues to help locally.

Both Toledo Senior Center and Toledo Community Library sincerely appreciate all your support of their events and fundraisers.

Toledo Senior Center open weekdays 9 AM - 3 PM. Available for special events. Contact Diana, (360)864-2112. Also on Facebook.

Health Corner: On Fluoridation Versus Cavities

Newsweek reported: Fluoridation May Not Prevent Cavities, Scientific Review Shows
There is little recent or high-quality evidence that fluoridation reduces tooth decay, according to a review.

Excerpt: The review identified only three studies since 1975 - of sufficient quality to be included - that addressed the effectiveness of fluoridation on tooth decay in the population at large. These papers determined that fluoridation does not reduce cavities to a statistically significant degree in permanent teeth, says study co-author Anne-Marie Glenny, a health science researcher at Manchester University in the United Kingdom.

The authors also found only two studies since 1975 that looked at the effectiveness of reducing cavities in baby teeth, and found fluoridation to have no statistically significant impact here, either.

NBCNews wrote: Science says fluoride in water is good for kids. So why are these towns banning it?
In the past five years, 74 cities have voted to remove fluoride from their drinking water, despite thousands of studies showing it prevents cavities.

Excerpt: Paul Connett, a chemistry professor emeritus at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York...was initially skeptical of concerns about fluoride when his wife asked him two decades ago about its health effects.

“The prevailing attitude is that people who are opposed to fluoride are crazy, so I didn’t want to be stigmatized in that way,” Connett said.

But the more he looked into it, the more convinced Connett became that fluoride was indeed toxic.

He now cites what he bills as a “dynamite” 2017 study that concluded that higher prenatal fluoride exposure was associated with lower cognitive outcomes in children in Mexico.

The findings, he says, are consistent with more than 50 other studies that concluded that fluoride lowers IQ.

Gaia chimes in: The Actual Truth About Fluoride

Excerpt: One organ that is particularly susceptible to fluoride build-up is the pineal gland; the part of our brain responsible for regulating sleep and reproductive hormones. Sometimes known as “the third eye,” this small gland has been linked to metaphysical abilities by many cultures throughout history. Philosopher and scientist René Descartes believed the pineal gland to be the “principal seat of the soul.”

It is estimated that 40% of Americans have significant amounts of fluoride build-up in this gland by age 17. By old age, the pineal gland contains about the same amount of fluoride as a tooth. While the role of the pineal gland in facilitating psychic abilities and increased intuition is still up for debate, the fact that fluoride consumption impacts the gland’s ability to function is absolutely proven.

There is no solid proof that drinking fluoride actually improves dental health.
