Cliff Mass Weather & Climate Blog: Sticky Air and Record-Breaking Moisture over Western Washington
July 11, 2019 - How do I say this politely?
A number of people (have) been complaining to me about their discomfort the past few days and, yes, their profuse sweating.
The air has been humid and sticky. Uncomfortable, even with relative modest temperatures.
The reason? The air has been unusually moisture laden, particularly for the normally crisp, dry Pacific Northwest.

USDA: Drones Provide Eye-in-the-Sky to Help Fight Fires
July 9, 2019 - Wildfires blackened nearly 8.8 million acres in the United States last year, highlighted in the news by California’s Camp Fire, the deadliest in that state’s history.
One of the many things that make wildfires so difficult to contain is the effect a fire has on local winds, which can move the fire in unexpected directions with virtually no notice. But, now, technology is being tested that may help firefighters keep pace with a blaze – increasing their safety and allowing them to better position their limited resources.
Xiaolin Hu, director of Georgia State University’s Systems Integrated Modeling and Simulation lab, is heading a project that develops drones to collect real-time data about wildfires, including fire front data and wind data in the wildfire area. USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture is funding the project.

FDA: Altaire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Issues Voluntary Recall Of Multiple Ophthalmic Products Sold At CVS*
Company Announcement
July 10, 2019 - Altaire Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announces today that it is voluntarily recalling the Over-the-Counter (OTC) drug products and lots, within expiry, sold at CVS Health during the time period as indicated in the tables below. As a precautionary measure, Altaire is voluntarily initiating the recall due to management concerns regarding the sufficiency of Quality Assurance controls over critical systems in the manufacturing facility. The FDA has determined these issues indicate a lack of sterility assurance. Administration of a non-sterile product intended to be sterile may result in serious and potentially life threatening infections or death.

FTC: FTC shuts down student loan debt relief scheme
July 11, 2019 - In a new case announced today, the FTC alleges the operators of Mission Hills Federal and Federal Direct Group bilked borrowers out of more than $23 million. The FTC says these companies lured people with false promises to pay down student loans and lower monthly payments. According to the FTC, the companies also lied about taking over the servicing of the loans, which tricked people into submitting loan payments directly to them. In fact, the defendants diverted borrower payments to themselves.

WA State ATG: Attorney General Ferguson’s investigation into Premera data breach results in Premera paying $10 million over failure to protect sensitive patient data
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 11 2019
Premera will pay $5.4 million to Washington and another $4.6 million to coalition of 29 state attorneys general that joined Ferguson’s investigation
OLYMPIA — As a result of an Attorney General’s Office investigation, Premera Blue Cross, the largest health insurance company in the Pacific Northwest, will pay $10 million nationwide for failing to secure sensitive consumer data and for misleading consumers before and after a data breach affecting millions across the country. Attorney General Bob Ferguson led a coalition of 30 state attorneys general investigating the company’s practices.
The data breach affected the information of more than 10.4 million individuals nationwide, including more than 6.4 million Washingtonians. Under the consent decree, filed today in Snohomish County Superior Court, Premera will pay $5.4 million of the total recovery to the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, which will go towards continued enforcement of state data security and privacy laws, and nearly $4.6 million to the coalition of states that joined Ferguson’s legal action.
Premera’s $10 million payment to the states is in addition to any payment from the proposed class action settlement, which was filed in federal court in Oregon but not yet finalized by the court.
