Meet Blaze…
Picture
...an unlikely candidate for a Service Dog - rescued from a cage at around 3 years old, lacking in even rudimentary leash training, and completely without social skills, animal or human. This American Boxer faced a bleak future...

Tammy West lives with a rare combination of factors that hinder her daily living, and service animals are not available for her condition. So she looked outside the Box (pun intended).

According to Service Dogs America: There is no such thing as a Governmental Authority or Agency "certifying" Service Dogs in the United States. (Link here.) Further: A disabled person has the right to train his or her own Service Dog, either with the help of a trainer or without.

Only since March has Tammy been working with Blaze, and results are nothing short of remarkable.

At the Castle Rock Fair, Blaze was alert yet calm, tolerating my small attentions (at Tammy’s invitation) while placing himself subtly between us.

Fair-goers, animals, food stands, a cacophony of sights, smells, and sounds that would overwhelm most dogs. Blaze behaved admirably, a testament to Tammy’s remarkable skill.

*Remember - do not touch or approach a service animal unless you first get permission from their handler.

Not so remarkable was my first attempt at hitting a target since junior high school…

Don't blame my instructor, a patient woman who coached me to land one of three practice shots on the broad target, and kindly invited me to return for another try.

Perhaps another time.
