U.S. Reps. Herrera Beutler and Roybal-Allard Introduce Midwives for MOMS Act
“America’s maternity care is at a crisis level with high rates of maternal and infant mortality, preterm births, and a staggering lack of prenatal care for moms,” Herrera Beutler said. “We must prioritize quality care for moms and babies in this country no matter where they live or their economic status. Midwives play a critical role in giving many moms access to high-quality maternity care. As parents and leaders in Congress, let’s rally around this legislative solution to increase the number of qualified midwives and improve health outcomes for moms and babies.”
“America’s mothers and babies deserve the best possible care, and midwives are essential to providing them with that excellent care,” Roybal-Allard said. “That is why I am so proud of our bipartisan Midwives for MOMS Act, which will expand educational opportunities for midwives. If we can expand mothers’ access to midwives’ evidence-based, holistic, and woman-centered care, we will improve maternity care outcomes for mothers and babies, and reduce maternity care costs for America’s families and for our state and local governments.”

Health Corner: Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM)
CDC: Overview - Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a rare but serious syndrome (a pattern of symptoms) that causes limb weakness, mostly in children. Three national outbreaks have occurred starting in 2014, when CDC began surveillance for AFM.
- Most patients developed AFM in late summer or early fall.
- Most patients had respiratory symptoms or fever consistent with a viral infection less than a week before onset of limb weakness.
- CDC believes viruses, including enteroviruses, play a role in AFM.
- Currently, there are no proven ways to treat or prevent AFM.
- Prompt symptom recognition, specimen collection, and reporting to CDC are all critical to improve understanding of this complex syndrome, including its risk factors, outcomes, possible treatments, and ways to prevent it.
570 confirmed cases since CDC began tracking since Aug. 2014.
Washington State confirmed 11 of 233 cases in 2018.

NIAID: Acute Flaccid Myelitis Requires Galvanized Research Response
April 2, 2019 - Excerpt: The authors note that the term AFM was coined in recent years, but the condition itself represents a subset of cases of a long-recognized syndrome called acute flaccid paralysis. AFM unexpectedly re-emerged globally in epidemic form in 2014 and appears to occur at the same time and locations as outbreaks of the once-obscure enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68), which causes respiratory illness that is typically mild, and EV-A71, another enterovirus. Experts have yet to prove definitively that EV-D68 is a major cause of epidemic AFM. However, the epidemiological evidence implicating the virus is growing, the authors explain.
