Lewis County 911 Communications shared a post from Centralia, WA Police Department:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Telephone Scams
The Centralia Police Department, along with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Chehalis Police Department has recently received a large number of reports of telephone scams involving bogus collection calls.
These calls are coming from numerous long distance phone numbers and some scammers are requesting your credit card information over the telephone. The callers are identifying themselves as the IRS or warrant service companies. In most reports, the callers are telling the victims that a warrant has been issued for their arrest or they are being sued.
According to the IRS website, “IRS does not threaten taxpayers with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement action” and “will never ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.”
Please use caution when talking with these individuals and never provide them with your credit card information over the telephone until you have confirmed that it is legitimate.

EarthSky posted: Tonight (July 31) ... Mars closest to Earth
Closer than since 2003! Even closer now than when we passed between Mars and the sun last Friday. How that can happen, and the prospects for viewing Mars through a telescope now: http://bit.ly/2mXuKDX
Ethan Siegel: Which Planet Appears The Largest From Earth?
“Mars experiences the greatest relative variation in angular size, from 3.5" to 25.1". Saturn, the second-largest planet, ranges from 14.5" to 20.1", but if you include its main rings, becomes enormous, spanning from 33.8" to 46.9".”
Once every orbit, Earth makes its closest approach to each of the other worlds in our Solar System. Mars is in that configuration right now, where it appears brighter and bigger in the sky than it will at any other time throughout the year. This...

**Also thank you to Brooke Sellards Acosta and her team of volunteers who have helped ensure the community garden at Toledo Elementary School is watered every day so our kids and families can continue to enjoy the harvest... it takes a village and we sure have a good one!
Tech Tuesday: How to Build a DIY Air Conditioner in Minutes for Less Than $10
I couldn’t decide whether this project belonged in Tech Tuesday (even though it’s very low-tech) or in Thursday’s Health Column. Since it’s still hotter than blazes, I opted for sooner than later.
Even healthy folks can protect themselves from the toll high temps take on their system; those with health conditions, advanced years, and the very young are more susceptible to extreme heat.
The Mayo Clinic explains why hot weather puts extra stress on your body:
“To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate. … Under normal conditions, your skin, blood vessels and perspiration level adjust to the heat. But these natural cooling systems may fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures and humidity for too long …”
