FDA: Statement Alerting Patients And Healthcare Professionals Of NDMA Found In Samples Of Ranitidine

September 13, 2019 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has learned that some ranitidine medicines, including some products commonly known as the brand-name drug Zantac, contain a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) at low levels. NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer) based on results from laboratory tests. NDMA is a known environmental contaminant and found in water and foods, including meats, dairy products, and vegetables.

The FDA has been investigating NDMA and other nitrosamine impurities in blood pressure and heart failure medicines called Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) since last year. In the case of ARBs, the FDA has recommended numerous recalls as it discovered unacceptable levels of nitrosamines.

NPR: Purdue Pharma, Accused Of Fueling Opioid Crisis, Files For Chapter 11

September 16, 2019 - Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sunday night, just days after striking a settlement with more than 2,000 local governments over its alleged role in creating and sustaining the deadly opioid crisis.
…

On Sunday, Purdue's board of directors approved the settlement, which includes 24 state attorneys general who sued the company, accusing it of fueling the nationwide addiction crisis by aggressively marketing OxyContin while downplaying its potential for addiction.
…

The bankruptcy filing follows a statement by New York's state attorney general, Letitia James, alleging that investigators discovered nearly $1 billion in wire transfers made by Purdue to Swiss bank accounts — allegedly to shield the family's wealth from litigation.

PSA: Nail Artist Spots Serious Health Issue In Client’s Fingernail
Picture
Nails By Krissy - Reposted

I had a walk-in nail client a couple weeks ago. She had been going to the "NAILS" type salons for years. She had a straight dark vertical stripe down her nail. She said as soon as she sat down---I need a color dark enough to cover this stripe. The nail salons "diagnosed" her a few different ways. Some said it was a lack of calcium. Some said it was hereditary. At least one had told her it was a blood blister.

This is melanoma!!! I did not want to frighten her but I told her she needed to see her doctor immediately! She called me today to tell me that yes it was a very aggressive melanoma that has already spread to her lymph nodes!! Her prognosis is not good! Please pay attention to abnormalities in your nail beds!! Odd changes in your nails can very likely be nothing to worry about! But sometimes it is an indication of a very serious disease. And please keep an eye on the nail beds---toes and fingers----of your elderly loved ones and your loved ones that aren't physically able to notice changes in the nail beds! Early diagnosis can make all the difference in the world!!!

(I share this with her permission.)

Toledo Flying Club wrote: Final Goodbye To Captain John Mathews

Video link here

Aviation is a close knit family, and when we lose one of our own, we tend to mourn the loss, but celebrate the life! Yesterday we said our final goodbye to Captain John Mathews, a decorated Vietnam veteran, career American Airlines Captain, and one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met. John's memorial service, held at his home in Toledo, Washington, was overflown by a missing-man formation provided by Mr. Andy Pomeroy, Bryan Nairn, Garrett Nelson, Andy Karmy and Victor Cotham. It was a true honor to have these gentlemen, also known as the Flying Aardvarks, provide such a wonderful gesture on behalf of John and his family. I shall be forever grateful to Andy and his crew for their selfless contribution to John's memorial service.
