Lyft: The Ride To Vote
Rideshare icon Lyft is promoting The Ride To Vote on November 6, 2018 in a non-partisan effort to eliminate one big reason underserved populations fail to vote - transportation.

They wrote: “It is estimated that over 15 million people were registered but didn’t vote in 2016 because of transportation issues.1 That’s why we’re committed to providing 50% off rides across the country, and free rides to underserved communities that face significant obstacles to transportation.”

Further, between now and Election Day, Lyft will work with Vote.org, TurboVote, Nonprofit Vote & others to get the word out about registering to vote.

In Washington State: Election day is Tuesday, November 6.
  • The deadline to register online is Monday, October 8.
  • The deadline for registering to vote by mail is Monday, October 8.
  • The deadline to register to vote in person is Monday, October 29.

Everest - It all started with two friends hiking Hogback Mountain and talking about their Bucket Lists. One year later, we were standing at Everest Base Camp, 17,600 feet above sea level, in utter awe of the cold, snowy, and deadly beauty surrounding us.

Health Corner: Treating Infestations

Despite best efforts, kids WILL come home with a little something extra from time to time. Sometimes only your pharmacist or veterinarian has the solution to parasitic visitors, other times home remedies can do the job at far less cost and with fewer side effects.

Ringworm: Highly contagious but responds well to home remedies, this skin condition isn’t actually a worm, but results from a fungus. Yes, those undergoing treatment for ringworm ought to stay home away from others for 24 hours to be safe. Symptoms can linger 2 weeks.

Healthline responds: Most cases of ringworm clear up within two weeks. Read about 6 different DIY concoctions to speed things up a bit. Incubation lasts from about four to 14 days.

Note: Different kinds of animals can transmit ringworm infection to people, particularly kittens and puppies. Although adult dogs and cats often do not show signs of infection, young animals may have hairless, circular or irregularly shaped patches that may or may not itch. Scaling, redness, and crusting are also seen in animals.

Note: medicinenet.com puts one fear to rest - the type of ringworm acquired from pets is not transmitted from human to human, only from animal to human.

Head lice: These parasites are developing resistance to commercial products, as noted in 20 Ways to Kill Head Lice so it’s certainly worth trying. One reader learned one of these home remedies from her mom and uses it with her own family - mayo followed by vinegar.
Q: How long do you leave the mayo in/on?
A: about an hour or longer.
Q: Do you dilute the vinegar?
A: Do not dilute the vinegar. Pour it on the hair straight. It will take the greasiness out of hair and also breaks down the louse shell.
Q: Do you use the special fine-tooth lice comb afterwards?
A: It is better to use a lice comb but not necessary, depending. If the infestation is major, I would recommend using the lice comb.

Fleas: Pardon my bias - though I favor home remedies wherever possible, this is one place where I tend to go all scorched earth and nuclear - in the house, that is.
Stow opened cereal & cookies in the fridge or freezer, bread & paper-bagged anything like rice & flour. Cover aquariums & remove pets & people for several hours.
Bombs away.

Air the house thoroughly upon returning, Wipe down kitchen counters and anyplace involved with food. Launder pet beds, blankets & towels including bedspreads frequented by animals.

Eggs can lie dormant seemingly for eons, and carpet shampooing seldom eliminates them. Some swear Borax laundry soap sprinkled on the carpet will dessicate those eggs, but I always think of babes, toddlers and kids playing on the floor - anything with a skin, eye or respiratory warning label is a solid NO.
For critters, flea baths using gentle or baby shampoos plus a drop of Dawn and a flea comb if needed. Pets groom themselves and you don’t want them ingesting toxins. Yes, I know they drink out of the commode and worse, but we’re discussing lethal insecticides here.

*Health Corner Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively. Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived.
And miracles take place against all odds.
