EarthSky updated Sunday: Death toll surges over 800 in Indonesia earthquake. Article links several news sources worldwide including BBC, Washington Post, The Guardian.

CBSNews/Moneywatch reported: Hurricane Florence crippled electricity and coal -- solar and wind were back the next day.
Said @Johniadarola: The cool thing about solar and wind energy farms is that when a hurricane hits them they don't spill toxic coal ash into drinking water, potentially sickening or killing countless people.

PRI.org posted August 24: Some of the last Puerto Ricans without power got it today. But it’s a tenuous system prone to outages and not a long-term solution by any means.

Lewis County BOCC agenda this morning includes 2 topic-related requests:
  • Proclamation recognizing October 7-13, 2018, as Public Power Week in honor of the PUD's contributions to Lewis County.
  • Proclamation recognizing October 2018 as Lewis County Disaster Preparedness & Lewis County Alert Awareness Month.

Coincidence?

@RedmondWaPD warns: Just a reminder that when disasters strike, fraudsters come out to take advantage of people's generosity. There are many scams right now trying to cash in on Hurricane Florence. Check the validity of a nonprofit at watchdog sites like Charity Navigator or GuideStar.

FoodSafety.Gov has issued an allergy alert for Whole Foods tortilla chips, and voluntary recall of Mauna Loa macadamia nut products due to potential e. Coli bacteria contamination.

Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling 365 Everyday Value White Corn Tortilla Chips because the product may contain undeclared milk that was not listed on the product label. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation is voluntarily recalling all of its products produced at the Keaau facility between Sept. 6 - 21, 2018 due to a potential contamination of Escherichia coli (E. coli). The recall was initiated due to E.coli being detected in the well water and distribution system that supplies the firm’s operations. No illnesses related to the water have been reported to the state.
Mauna Loa is voluntarily recalling their products out of an abundance of caution under the advisement of the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH).

Washington State Patrol is reducing lane & road closures by 60-75% following accidents with UAS - Unmanned Aerial System - drones. In use since May, these drones photograph and map out incident scenes while protecting troopers from live traffic.

WSP pilots must pass an FAA exam & train 40 hoursbefore they can fly the UAS. The technology and use of the UAS gained national recognition after officials utilized it for the December 2017 Amtrak derailment in DuPont.

Washington State Fire Wire answers:
Q: Are there many fires still burning in WA State?

A: Yes. A number of fires remain burning, but operations have been dramatically scaled down on them as their current rates of spread are minimal. Some of these fires will continue burning until winter rains/snow extinguishes them. There is still significant threat of new wildfire starts in numerous counties, with at least one fire in the last week listed at over 100 acres. In addition, forestry agencies are currently conducting prescribed burns in numerous locations.

WDFW reminder:
WDFW schedules controlled burns in two South Sound wildlife areas
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will be conducting controlled burns for habitat restoration on two wildlife areas in the South Puget Sound region through mid-October at the Scatter Creek Wildlife Area northeast of Rochester and the West Rocky Prairie Wildlife Area northwest of Tenino.

Darric Lowery, WDFW wildlife area manager, said the burns are weather dependent, and will be conducted for one to three days in each area. The areas targeted for burning are small, varying in size from one to 10 acres.
