Monday I received an Amber Alert via text on my cell phone, and although the missing 6yo Spokane girl was found safe within 5 hours, I was curious to know what’s involved.

There’s an AmberAlert website including definitions, technology employed and other FAQ’s. And no, it’s not text but Wireless Emergency Alerts, WEA, also used to send you imminent threats - severe man-made or natural disasters such as earthquakes, severe weather warnings or emergency evacuations, wherever you travel.

NOAA answers 21 questions about WEA. Even Pay-As-You-Go phones are WEA-capable, alerts free to the caller.
