FTC: SIM Swap Scams: How to Protect Yourself
October 23, 2019 - If your cell phone is your go-to device for checking your email, paying your bills, or posting to social media, you’re not alone. So imagine that your cell phone suddenly stops working: no data, no text messages, no phone calls. Then picture getting an unexpected notification from your cellular provider that your SIM card has been activated on a new device. What’s going on? These could be signs that a scammer has pulled a SIM card swap to hijack your cell phone number.
So how do scammers pull off a SIM card swap like this? They may call your cell phone service provider and say your phone was lost or damaged. Then they ask the provider to activate a new SIM card connected to your phone number on a new phone — a phone they own. If your provider believes the bogus story and activates the new SIM card, the scammer — not you — will get all your text messages, calls, and data on the new phone.
The scammer — who now has control of your number — could open new cellular accounts in your name or buy new phones using your information.
Or they could log in to your accounts that use text messages as a form of multi-factor authentication. How? Because they’ll get a text message with the verification code they need to log in.
*Multi-factor authentication (MFA) can provide extra account protection by requiring two or more credentials to log in. Besides your password, you’ll need a second credential to verify your identity. That could be something you have — like a passcode you get via text message, a security key, or an authentication app. Or something you are — like a scan of your fingerprint, your retina, or your face.
Armed with your log in credentials, the scammer could log in to your bank account and steal your money, or take over your email or social media accounts. And they could change the passwords and lock you out of your accounts.
Here’s what you can do to protect yourself from a SIM card swap attack:
Don’t reply to calls, emails, or text messages that request personal information. These could be phishing attempts by scammers looking to get personal information to access your cellular, bank, credit or other accounts. If you get a request for your account or personal information, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.
Limit the personal information you share online. If possible, avoid posting your full name, address, or phone number on public sites. An identity thief could find that information and use it to answer the security questions required to verify your identity and log in to your accounts.
Set up a PIN or password on your cellular account. This could help protect your account from unauthorized changes. Check your provider’s website for information on how to do this.
Consider using stronger authentication on accounts with sensitive personal or financial information. If you do use MFA, keep in mind that text message verification may not stop a SIM card swap. If you’re concerned about SIM card swapping, use an authentication app or a security key.
If you’re the target of a SIM swap scam
Contact your cellular service provider immediately to take back control of your phone number. After you regain access to your phone number, change your account passwords.
Check your credit card, bank, and other financial accounts for unauthorized charges or changes. If you see any, report them to the company or institution.
If you think a scammer has your information — like your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number — go to IdentityTheft.gov to see the specific steps to take.
Find out what else you can do to protect the personal information on your phone and how to keep your personal information secure online.

WDFW: Razor clam digs get go-ahead at Twin Harbors and Long Beach
October 24, 2019 - OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today that razor clam digging will move ahead at Twin Harbors and Long Beach this weekend, after tests revealed that shellfish from these coastal beaches are safe to eat.
Testing conducted by the Washington Department of Health (WDOH) on Thursday showed domoic acid levels were low enough for the digs to go ahead, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager.
“The health and safety of clam diggers is always our first concern, so we appreciate people’s patience while we worked with our partners at WDOH to confirm that these clams are safe to eat,” Ayres said. “We hope that everyone is able to get out and enjoy safe, productive digs at these beaches.”
The upcoming digs are scheduled for the following days and low tides:
Oct. 26, Saturday, 5:59 pm, 0.0 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis
Oct. 27, Sunday, 6:47 pm, -0.8 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
Oct. 28, Monday, 7:33 pm, -1.2 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis
Oct. 29, Tuesday, 8:18 pm, -1.4 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
Oct. 30, Wednesday, 9:03 pm, -1.2 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis
Oct. 31, Thursday, 9:50 pm, -0.8 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
Nov. 1, Friday, 10:38 pm, -0.2 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis
These digs join previously approved digs at Mocrocks and Copalis beaches beginning this weekend. Additional information on those digs can be found in the news release at https://wdfw.wa.gov/news/wdfw-announces-seven-days-digging-razor-clams-beginning-oct-26.

WDFW partners with Weyerhaeuser Company to open 6,638 acres of forest for hunters
Oct 23, 2019 - OLYMPIA – This summer, Weyerhaeuser Company enrolled 6,638 acres in the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) Private Lands Access program. WDFW opened this section of forest as Feel Free to Hunt access this year.
“We are excited that Weyerhaeuser Company has chosen to provide free public hunting access on these parcels,” said Kessina Lee, WDFW Region 5 Director. “This greatly expands portions of their property for hunting opportunities for our southwest Washington hunters and those who visit from around the state.”
The land, referred to as the Cathlamet block, spans Cowlitz, Pacific, and Wahkiakum counties, and all the parcels are adjacent to Department of Natural Resources lands.

WSU: Extension Forestry - Forest Health Seminar
Is Your Forest “Healthy”? What Does That Mean?
Insects, disease, drought, wildfire, climate change, invasive species . . . These are all challenges that forests face and they seem to be taking a toll. As you look around the forest in your backyard or on your way to work, you may see several dead or dying trees. But is this anything to worry about?
Forest health is a complex concept and tree death is a natural part of it, which can make it difficult to know when a dead or dying tree is truly a bad thing. This seminar will help you understand when to be concerned, what to look for, and what you may be able to do about it on your own property. You’ll also receive a wealth of information on resources available in your area that can help you learn and do more.
What’s Covered:
Forest health concepts and learning how to identify a problem
Identifying and managing common tree insects and diseases
Identifying damage from environmental stressors
Understanding wildfire risk and adaptation in western Washington
Resources available in your area to help you with your management
Details:
When: Tuesday, November 5 from 6PM-8PM
Where: Lyle Community Center – 700 Main Ave, Morton, WA 98356
Cost: There is no cost to this seminar but please register ahead of time so we can get a head count.

Weekend Outlook:
Saturday: Julie MacDonald Zander shared: Matilda Jackson Legacy Day Saturday
Saturday, October 26, is Matilda Jackson Legacy Day at the historic 1847 Jackson Courthouse. We'll honor the pioneer woman who crossed the Oregon Trail in 1847, watched her husband drown crossing the Snake River in what today is Idaho, gave premature birth to her baby girl, and finished the trip with her four young sons between the ages of nine and three. She recuperated at the Whitman Mission, shot Celilo Falls in a canoe because she was too weak to portage around, and, in May 1848, married the first American settler north of the Columbia River. She gained a reputation for good cooking and hospitality throughout Washington Territory and entertained Washington Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens and his family as well as U.S. Grant, Phil Sheridan, and George McClellan, who later became generals. We'll also unveil the book, Washington Territory's Grand Lady: The Story of Matilda (Glover) Koontz Jackson. A special U.S. postal cancellation honoring Matilda will be available at the Jackson Courthouse station.
