Gallery 505 Opening Night kicks off November’s theme SPACE in expansive style 1 - 8 p.m. with a special event.

Di Morgan shared: Toledo’s resident astrophysicist Ethan Siegel will be signing copies of his new book “Treknology: The Science of Star Trek from Tricorders to Warp Drive” from 5 to 8 p.m. (today), Nov. 2 at Gallery 505 Artist Cooperative to coincide with the opening of our new “Space” themed exhibit on display this month.

The 216-page, hardcover book from Voyageur Press retails for $30 and is packed full of glossy color photos from the Star Trek films and television series. Siegel profiles and explains the science behind iconic inventions from the Star Trek universe, including warp drive, tricorders, androids, replicators, cloaking devices, transporters, phasers, transparent aluminum, hyposprays, tractor beams and more.

Mr. Siegel is a PhD astrophysicist, science writer, author, (sometimes) professor of physics and astronomy, and a longtime Star Trek fan. He has written for Forbes, Scientific American, NASA’s Space Place and many other print and online publications. His award-winning science blog Starts with a Bang has been educating the world since 2008.

“Treknology” is also for sale on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0760352631/

*Editor’s note: While you’re there, pick up a copy of Sunburned: The Solar Flare That Silenced The Internet (Volume 1) plus the long-awaited sequel This Too Shall Collapse by local sci fi author Jake Blake.

Health Corner: De-stressing During Holidays

As the holidays approach, stress levels can rise & rob us of the joy of the season. How do you handle the demands on your time and resources, especially your energy & sanity?

Unclutterer helps answer that timeless question: “Can I pick your brain?”
Short answer: That depends.

One reader, an attorney, responded: “Obviously you can’t charge EVERYONE a fee (“Mom, I’d love to talk about the weather for another 35 minutes with you but I’d have to charge you”)...
Said another: “I developed an FAQ which I send in response to any request for an info interview. Usually that is enough.”
Check out all the legitimate responses between Yes & No in the article.

Anxiety can rob you of sleep; lack of sleep can trigger anxiety. Lifehacker reviewed the solution in a weighted blanket in this story. Might want to open this gift early.

Maybe these sleep eye mask headphones will complete your slumber ensemble.

Need to get away from it all? Check out how this couple flew to Hawaii for almost free ($44.80 taxes & TSA fees).

Here’s a homegrown proposal: Some time back, I was at my friend’s house in early December when a parcel service delivered a package. My friend thanked the driver, studied the label, then handed the box to her preschooler for opening. Asked why she didn’t hold it back until the 25th, she responded, “Oh, we mete out the gifts, outings and celebrations throughout the month instead of saving it all up for one hyperactive, sugar-laden pre-dawn eruption followed by tears and early naps. They handle it better that way, a little at a time. And so do we.”

Now, doesn’t that sound less stressful?

*Since that exchange, I began observing my birthday month in the same manner, four weeks of gifts, outings and celebrations. Few miss an anniversary month - nobody is ever a day late - and I typically extend the same observation of other’s special months. Only a few folk really press me for a specific date, and I confess I wonder why it matters more to them than it does to me. But only for a moment. Then I return to “Hooray! It’s my birthday month!”

Toledo’s world-class celeb Paolo Suculima De La Concha Zindel posted this appeal to supporters and the community: Thinking of my dear friends Jessa Campbell and Kay Montano-valde May you be held during these times. If you have been touched by the lives of Jessica and Kaleb, you know how special they are. I have been blessed by their presence and love and multiple gifts. At the moment Their Grandmother Lola has passed and they need our support! Please consider gifting them some of what we can put together and more! They have certainly gifted me already so much.
