USDA on firewood: Buy It Where You Burn It
Invasive, tree-killing pests – like the destructive Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer – can hide deep inside firewood all through the winter as they develop and grow. Even in the cold, snow, and rain, invasive insects continue their life cycle inside infested wood. In the spring, adult insects can tunnel out of the wood and escape to new homes – infesting trees near your home, cabin, campsite, or park.
This post relates how long it took to eradicate the Asian longhorned beetle from areas in Ohio, Illinois & Massachusetts - 7, 10 & 11 years, at enormous cost.
Washington State Patrol joined AAA Washington Campaign Wednesday:
Did you know a recent survey by AAA Washington revealed only 31% of WA drivers are actually distraction-free? Earlier (Wednesday) we partnered with AAA to announce its #DontDriveIntexticated campaign which is aimed at stopping distracted driving.
We don’t want to respond to another fatality... we want to change people’s behavior,” says Capt. Monica Alexander.

This Week In Science: GIS Day - the Bare Earth
Washington State Department of Natural Resources declared Wednesday:
Happy GIS Day! Geographic information systems help scientists at DNR analyze, manage, and store data every day. Take a moment to look one of our projects today: The Bare Earth.
This interactive experience shows you lidar exposes natural hazards in our state. See the full story map here: bit.ly/BareEarth
Recommended viewing: you will be stunned by the images and science-y technology in this one-page intro on landslides, volcanoes & faults, and more. Watch the ever-changing dome in Mt St Helens crater, see the clearly-defined fault line on Bainbridge Island, watch tsunamis and river flooding, and something called surficial geology. Worth the trip.
Bonus: choose from 20 downloadable screensavers, new for 2018.

Toledo Lions Club announces:
It's Turkey Bingo Time at Toledo High School. One can of food for each card up to four cards. Or $1.00 a card up to 4 cards. Why not bring a bag of food? It all goes to the Toledo Food Bank and helps feed your neighbors in need!
This annual favorite event is probably Toledo Lions Club’s worst-kept secret. Word of mouth has been drawing Bingo players for years. Toledo Lions Club Turkey Bingo will begin 6 p.m. Friday, November 16 at the Toledo High School multipurpose room. Entrance is a $1 donation or a can of food for the Toledo food bank.
Op Ed: In some circles November is considered Gratitude Month, sharing is encouraged, and nobody goes hungry. Consider your neighbors during Thanksgiving season, both those seated next to you and others you know only a little who may be struggling this year. Toledo Lions Club strives to set the table for Thanksgiving while bringing fun and entertainment to the community.
In short: Don’t hoard turkeys. Play nice & share. Once you’ve won your prize, relax and watch. Better yet, pass it along to a worthy recipient or cause. That way, everyone wins.
