Full release here: Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, LLC Recalls Raw Ground Turkey Products due to Possible Salmonella Reading Contamination
Editor’s Note: FSIS and our public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health officials, are investigating a Salmonella Reading outbreak. Please note that FSIS is continuing to investigate illnesses associated with this widespread outbreak, and additional product from other companies may also be recalled. Salmonella is prevalent and can be present in raw poultry and meat – no raw poultry or meat is sterile. In addition to discarding the product associated with this recall, consumers can protect themselves now and in the future by ALWAYS cooking their turkey, and other poultry products thoroughly, to a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees, as measured using a food thermometer. The cooking process kills the Salmonella. No one should be eating partially cooked or raw turkey. Additionally, it is essential that people wash their hands after handling raw poultry, meat, and pet food to avoid cross contamination.

The Gift of Presence – moving toward a more mindful holiday season
This year, with the holidays just around the corner and many of us parents shopping for gifts to put under the tree I am struck by the paradox of the word “present.” This time of year many parents work overtime and spend hours searching online or in stores for the best sales on the just- right presents to gift their children – it’s tradition and, we think, a way to show our love. The irony is that all of this effort, time and energy to give presents ultimately makes it difficult to be present. Yet studies show that what children need to be healthy and thriving is our presence, not more things.
So this year our family is trying something different – gifting presence. This doesn’t mean we won’t be shopping at all or that our tree will be completely bare - extremes have never been our jam. But with each gift given there will be an intention of presence. If a game is given it will come with a coupon for “one hour of my time to play this game with you”. If anyone receives a scarf or hat it will be hand-made (though not by me – let’s just say I still have a LOT to learn when it comes to hand-crafts!) and purchased locally, from people we know or have met in person. Personally I’m hoping for some home-made dark chocolate, hand-dipped candles, bath salts and a coupon for a week of presence with a morning walking buddy – maybe Ben and our girls will pick up on my hints?!
With this being such a busy time of year our family is looking forward to making this year special by moving toward a more mindful season of giving. Here are a few more “Gifts of Presence” ideas. What are your ideas?
- Date Night Out or In – Grab coffee to go, visit a favorite park together, sit and talk without distraction. Or stay home, order pizza, snuggle in for a good game, podcast or Netflix, have kids stay the night with a grandparent or friend. Dates don’t need to be extravagant, often less is more.
- Home-made Goodies – Make them together as a family and give them to neighbors and loved ones - Carmel corn, fudge, cookies, applesauce, jam, smoked meats...
- Parent-child Date – coupon for a trip to an ice cream shop, a walk to the park (you play on the toys with them!), or even a whole day trip to the beach!
- Hand-made Treasures – I know most of you are not as hand-craft challenged as I am so dig out that crochet hook, set up the sewing machine, get knitting! Know someone who would love something hand-made? Go pick out a pattern, the wood, fabric or yarn together – make a date of it!
- Tickets to a theatrical production, movie or other local or special event! One year our girls found in their stockings tickets to a play based on the book we had recently read together. They were delighted with anticipation and the play was magical!
- Weekly Phone call – Have a parent, aunt, uncle or grandparent who loves phone calls?
Give them an “IOU a weekly call” and work out a schedule together that works for both of you. You will make their Sunday! Or Monday or whichever day you choose!
