CDC: Outbreak of E. coli Infections Linked to Fresh Express Sunflower Crisp Chopped Salad Kits
Excerpt: Investigation of the Outbreak
Information collected to date indicates that Fresh Express Sunflower Crisp chopped salad kits are a likely source of this outbreak.
The investigation is ongoing to determine which ingredient in the salad was contaminated. Romaine lettuce is one of the ingredients in the salad kit, but we do not know yet if this outbreak is related to a current outbreak linked to romaine lettuce from the Salinas, California, growing region. Preliminary information indicates that romaine lettuce in the salad kits eaten by some of the sick people likely came from the Salinas growing region. CDC is concerned that these kits may still be in some homes. If you have any of these salad kits in your home, throw them away.
CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
FDA: Statement from Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, on impurities found in diabetes drugs outside the U.S.
December 5, 2019 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been investigating the presence of genotoxic impurities, called nitrosamines, in some types of drugs. Over the past year and a half, several drug products including angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and ranitidine, commonly known as Zantac, have been found to contain small amounts of nitrosamines such as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). During this time, there has been an ongoing investigation into the presence of nitrosamines in other drug products. This effort is focused on ensuring the drugs used by Americans continue to meet strict quality standards.
The FDA is aware that some metformin diabetes medicines in other countries were reported to have low levels of NDMA. Based on the information we have available, the levels of NDMA seen outside the U.S. are within the range that is naturally occurring in some foods and in water. While we are aware that some regulatory agencies outside the U.S. may be recalling some metformin drugs, there are no metformin recalls affecting the U.S. market at this time. The FDA is investigating whether metformin in the U.S. market contains NDMA, and whether it is above the acceptable daily intake limit of 96 nanograms.
WSDA: USDA to Open Signup for Conservation Reserve Program on December 9
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 5, 2019 – Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture is opening signup for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) on December 9, 2019. The deadline for agricultural producers to sign up for general CRP is February 28, 2020, while signup for continuous CRP is ongoing.
Farmers and ranchers who enroll in CRP receive a yearly rental payment for voluntarily establishing long-term, resource-conserving plant species, such as approved grasses or trees (known as “covers”) to control soil erosion, improve water quality and develop wildlife habitat on marginally productive agricultural lands.
CRP marks its 35-year anniversary in 2020, and FSA will continue to highlight the impacts of the program that was created in 1985 and the many stewardship-minded farmers, ranchers and landowners who have participated over the years. Learn more.
To enroll in CRP, contact your local FSA county office or visit fsa.usda.gov/crp.

The Other Toledo: CALL TO ACTION
Activists from all across our country are reporting they are hearing from many MOCs that their offices are receiving more calls AGAINST impeachment than in favor of it this week.
It's important that we drive calls EVERY DAY, if possible, to every MOC in support of impeachment, before the House votes.
Speaker Pelosi has told House members to vote their conscience, not party over country. This is the honorable, solemn and respectful way of addressing impeachment and she is committed to this.
Please also call our Senators and tell them we want a fair and open trial! We don't want a circus trial masquerading as an impeachment trial. Tell our Senators the trial will be about this President's actions and betrayals, not about deflections and trying other individuals.
Tell all in both Houses that we need them to continue to speak against the Russian propaganda being voiced by members of the GOP.
Also, if you are interested, in calling the House committees themselves to press for expanded articles of impeachment. They often pick up the phone!
