Toledo Builds A High School: 2 Updates December 21, 2018 - Highlights
Construction Management: Design Committee members reviewing and scoring the six submissions; this process will be completed by January 5, top three put before the School Board at January 17 meeting.
Highlights:
- OSPI now estimates they will contribute up to $9.8 million toward the new school - $1.8 million more than the previous estimate.
- We were able to submit necessary forms to OSPI to preserve our ability to go out to bid in summer of 2019.
Planning for Community Visioning: Dowa/IBI, a firm that specializes in school construction, has offered to facilitate our visioning meeting on January 10. THS alumnus Jason King is scheduled to facilitate.
We're asking that you give some consideration to these "primer questions" prior to the meeting:
How do we define success for this project?
What are your Hopes, Dreams, and Fears for your kids’ futures?
What are the most important things you want your kids to learn (skills vs knowledge - STEM/CTE, robotics, foreign language/other cultures, food, outdoor learning, etc)?
What do your kids do after school?
What would you like your kids to do after school?
If you had one thing this school should say to your kids and to their kids, what should it say?
This meeting should take about 90 minutes to two hours depending upon attendance.
Following the visioning, I'll be providing a quick overview of the upcoming replacement levy proposal that will be on the February ballot.

USDA: News Release - Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, Inc. Recalls Raw Ground Turkey Products due to Possible Salmonella Reading Contamination
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. P-579” inside the USDA mark of inspection or on the side of the tray. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
Full Release here.
*EDITOR’S NOTE:. In addition to discarding the product associated with this recall, consumers can protect themselves now and in the future by ALWAYS cooking their turkey, and other poultry products thoroughly, to a safe internal temperature of 165 ℉, as measured using a food thermometer. The cooking process kills the Salmonella...

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife
Statement from WDFW Director, Kelly Susewind on Minter Creek Hatchery
On Dec. 14, the state's Minter Creek Hatchery lost power during a windstorm and the facility's backup generator failed to start. As a result, roughly 6 million chinook died.
This is a painful loss for state and tribal fishers, for the communities that depend on fishing, and for southern resident orcas that feed on chinook.
We're working with tribal co-managers and NOAA Fisheries to replace some of the salmon lost at Minter Creek with fish from other facilities and hope to announce more details on that soon.
Among the fish lost in the power failure were 500,000 spring chinook, which were part of an early effort at Minter Creek and other hatcheries to increase production of chinook to feed southern resident orcas. That loss is unfortunate.
I take this incident seriously. I have instructed staff to hire outside contractors to examine what went wrong with the backup generator and how our staff responded to the situation.
Based on those findings, we're going to take steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future.
