Educator Andrea Jones writes: From da Vinci, Giacometti, Calder, and Kandinsky to sculpting, working with color and texture, mixing chemicals, solving challenges through invention, and assembling an LED crystal - we have been enjoying learning through art and science!
Images courtesy Andrea Jones

This club has way too much fun and I just want to keep making art every day!

Plus: MAP comic creators and hand-crafters are super busy working on their stories and character development! They’ve also been learning new hands-on skills and showing off their talents by sculpting with pipe cleaners, foil, duct tape, clay and putty - a few even talked about going into business together making duct tape wallets!
Images courtesy Andrea Jones

I’m always impressed by how this larger group works so well together in a small space -though it can get loud and busy at times, they are (most of the time!) genuinely kind, considerate and collaborative.

And:  MAP music & math focus club is off to a good start and getting ready to welcome more new members next week!

I love seeing kids enjoy working with numbers. They’ve been really into working logic puzzles and it’s been a fun challenge for me to keep up with them!

Brooke from TES PTO shared:

TES Kid's Garden

It's January and many of us are thinking about our family's health and nutrition. This month at garden science Deidre Paris-Dillon was our guest speaker for nutrition. Each class learned about ways to improve their health with food, exercise, sleep and a positive attitude. Talk to your kids about these sessions, they might have some useful tips for the whole family.
It is the middle of winter so there's not a lot of growth happening in the garden, but don't forget that the kids planted a "winter garden." There is still tons of antioxidant-filled parsley and cilantro as well as kale, chard and collards. Go get some for your winters soups or morning smoothies!
We are also looking for garden sponsors, which ensures the continuation and improvement of this awesome program. If your family or business is interested, the form is attached.*

Op-Ed: On BBC’s "The Missing - Consequences of a Crackdown"

One reader shared this link to BBC’s 8-minute video The Missing - Consequences of a Crackdown regarding how students and neighbors are disappearing from nearby Pacific County under increased ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) patrols with no notice to county authorities. In this brief clip, a staunch deportation supporter was disillusioned by the actual effects of this sweeping mandate.

My own college writing instructor was 7 years old in 1942 when he & his family were removed from their home in Puget Sound to an internment camp in Idaho under President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 wherein families of Japanese descent, including nisei & sansei - second- and third-generation US-born citizens - were held for some 4 years without recompense.* It’s a matter of record that many of these young men actually volunteered to serve in the US Armed Services while their families remained in camps.

Regardless of your political affiliations, the far-reaching consequences are playing out very differently than anyone imagined.

*President Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, issuing a blanket apology and about $20K for each detainee.

Health Corner: Guest Post - On Neural Diversity

Living with autism, the turning point in my life was not being diagnosed as different, this I already knew, it was realizing how much I had in common with other "Neural Typical" people. The differences seemed endless but what we had in common was something I could focus on. Over time, I have begun to realize what we have in common is just as endless.
Every day that I interact with others is a challenge and I always fail at expressing myself but I push forward with great joy, excited by what connections I will find in each new day. I will never be NT but I do have goals in behavior that I still wish to achieve and patiently work towards.
Changing patterns as an autistic is more than changing the chemicals we send to receptors or the way receptors make connections, we use parts of the brain differently and have parts that don't develop well, such as the part of the brain that processes social interaction, where you sit on the autism scale often has to do with how underdeveloped this area is, I am not sure if I am trying to make that area work or causing a new area of the brain to take on part of that thinking, what I do know is the long history of struggle I had to get this far... The greatest compliment is when someone says they didn't realize I was autistic; at the same time I then worry that when I fail in social moments with people who don't see me as autistic or who figure I was self diagnosed after taking on internet poll is that they only see my failure and give no thought to all the doctors I've seen, therapies I've tried and battles I've fought that gave me victories to make it this far... The worst is when they see your successes and assume your use of autism as a label is just to have an excuse for erratic behavior or social awkwardness... If you can seem so normal you must not really have a problem... But what can you do...
I see my success and am proud of them, my family loves me and even though characters like Forrest Gump, Joe Dirt and Sheldon from Big bang theory draw looks and giggles from them sometimes as those characters do stuff that "supposedly" reminds them of me... It's always something I can laugh at too and shows me they accept me as I am and don't judge me by spectrums, that is everything to me!
I could never thank them enough for making me feel like part of the human race. Their love lifted me up no matter how much I beat myself down.
The joke is no one is really NT we are all neural diverse, and better off for it... We become happier when we realize this simple truth that we all have in common.

Aloha always

Ben

Toledo Middle School Reports 78% Sign-up Rate for College Bound Scholarship

Toledo January 22, 2018—78 percent of last year’s eligible eighth graders signed up for the College Bound Scholarship in Toledo School District. Statewide, the average sign-up rate was 71 percent, with over 30,000 of last year’s eighth graders signing up. Governor Inslee has recognized the 270 schools and 115 school districts that exceeded the state average with Gold Star Awards.

Students who sign up for the scholarship graduate from high school and enroll in college at higher rates than their low-income peers. The first cohort of College Bound students graduated from high school in 2012. Since then, the four-year high school graduation rate for these students has consistently been similar to the statewide average, and over ten percentage points higher than for low-income students who were eligible but didn’t sign up. The first few cohorts of students who signed up for the scholarship have begun enrolling in college and do so at rates at or above the statewide average.

Toledo Middle School begins early in the year to get commitments from eligible students and parents. The process requires completing a form and turning it in. Doing so does not obligate the student to attend college. “While not every student will attend college, this provides students with an opportunity they might not otherwise have when they finish school.”, said Toledo Middle School principal, Heather Ogden. “Having this means that if a student keeps their grades up and remains a good citizen, money won’t be an obstacle to attending school after graduation.”

Eligible students must sign up in middle school, by June 30 of their eighth grade year, to receive this early commitment of state funding. In combination with other state aid, the scholarship covers tuition at public college rates. To receive the scholarship, students must enroll in an eligible college within one year of high school graduation.

From Mashable: Remember Spectre and Meltdown?

Thankfully, Intel offered up a partial fix — so all good, right? Well, not exactly. It turns out the patch that was issued by Intel has a few problems of its own, things are so busted that the company is telling some of its customers to avoid the official patch altogether.

CNET explained: (Intel) told manufacturers and users to "stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior," said Intel Executive Vice President Navin Shenoy. "I assure you we are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues."

Ben Maestas of Lewis County Permaculture Society asked: Who would be interested in getting together for a class on mapping your land for Permaculture design?

We can go over what to include in the map and how to use that map in planning.
It would be a two day event. After learning, participants would be expected to go home and make a map of their land which we will go over, as a group, the following week.
End of February- beginning of March maybe...

If interested let me know when sounds available for you.
Thanks
Ben

Health Corner: Flu Prevention & Treatment

This year’s flu outbreak is, by all accounts, the worst most people can recall, deadly in a few cases. Everyone knows the basics - vaccinations, lots of hand washing, reducing exposure, plenty of rest and liquids, etc.

Here are some simple (and cheap) remedies recommended by experts & moms:
  • Flat cola sipped ever so slowly, halts nausea, reduces headache; 12oz/6 hrs*
  • Airborne OTC at the first tickle in your throat (Thanks to Daniel Finney)
  • Type “flu” in search field @ mindbodygreen for kitchen-based & natural remedies

What cures have you tried, tested and adopted?

*A long-retired hospital nurse cured me with flat cola when I was unable to keep down soda crackers or even water for 3 days, despite my futile clinic visit. The same remedy worked a couple years back for a visitor who tried all the pharmaceutical potions without relief. Somehow it breaks whatever cycle triggers repeated vomiting, restores much-need salt (sodium), blood sugar levels, and for daily coffee drinkers, a bit of caffeine to reduce the headache from abrupt withdrawal.

Remember, I’m NOT a doctor and certainly not worth suing. Sharing what works for me and others is offered strictly as take-it-or-leave-it. As always, YMMV.

Tech Report: How I Got Rid Of 4 Filing Cabinets (& All My Bookcases)
Reprinted by request.

January seems to trigger New Years resolutions to organize, minimize, clear out the old and start with a fresh slate. In that spirit I share with you the resources I employed to reduce Paper, a source of much consternation in my own world. If you perceive such a task to be daunting, skip to the *PS at the end.

A lifetime ago, a contract I had was winding to a close and the business quit paying. Their tactic was to see how hungry I got, and find out how little I might settle for. They demanded all 3.5 years worth of multi-page pay applications be re-submitted for auditing.

I had moved, and everything was in sagging file boxes in storage. It seemed insurmountable.

Until the faint voice of The Office Ladies (Love those Office Ladies!) reminded me that emailing those forms to them would be fastest. My bulging Sent Mail file, which I never remembered to purge, had every single document required.

I can still recall the look on their attorney's face when Misty, my own Office Lady from an incubator office, came sailing into the meeting with 2 reams of printed copies, "taken from Sent Mail" (insert infuriated glare from their attorney to his client) AND dropped a CD with all the data on top of the stack. You could have heard a pin drop. Just like that, the meeting was over.

The next morning an email went out to all the subcontractors (like me) that “All pay applications will be submitted via electronic media, effective immediately.” I changed the way a large Texas land developer did business. And my check arrived via overnight mail shortly.

Today I have a better system than 3 years worth of Sent Mail.
And I have since conducted all my personal and business transactions paperless-ly. (Is that a word? It ought to be.)

First: You DO have paperless billing, yes?

For virtually (sic) everything paper: Scan. Then Print to PDF. Or Save As document or photo. Or Send to cloud storage or thumb drive. Or both. Tag it/label it/title it.

Resources:

www.PaperKarma.com for unsolicited mail
Gmail/Hotmail/any email with generous storage – plus one backup account
Google Drive or MS OneDrive (previously SkyDrive)
www.Evernote.com
www.getPocket .com
www.MyFax.com (One of few paid apps I endorse, $10/month)
www.Foxitsoftware.com (FoxitReader pdf editor) I like this one better than Adobe (and free), especially the Typewriter function that makes any PDF a fillable form. Works anywhere Adobe Reader is “required.”
Ereader apps – Nook, Kindle, Kobo, etc.

Special mention:
www.AirDroid.com or www.MightyText.net, productivity, lets me respond to texts in a separate tab or window without touching the phone. Sorry, iPeople, iOS doesn't do this yet.

*PS You don't have to Scan your entire world. Start by scanning/storing this week, and address older paperwork only as needed. In time, most of that old paper will become moot. The exceptions will stand out - mortgage, insurance, etc.

In response to Chehalis School District’s Facebook post on the new elementary school, a reader wrote: “It is so beautiful! Amazing driving by on I-5 seeing the progress! Wish our Toledo Community could pass a bond so that our kiddos in Toledo could have a school like this!”

That opportunity awaits voters once again on February’s ballot.

Citizens For Great Toledo Schools invites you: The school bond will run again on the February 13 ballot. Please come to the Bond committee meeting on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30 pm, at the Toledo Public Library.

For those who missed the December 7, 2017 presentation by ESD’s Cal Brody on how the  McCleary Decision will impact taxpayers, or the December 12, 2017 Special Meeting invitation with School Board Members to study the bond and Master Plan for more cost savings, this post on Facebook provides those new details:

Toledo School District has placed a $12.2 million bond measure on the February ballot. The district removed over $2 million in projects that were on the November measure including the track and restrooms. TMS roof will be completed with levy funds and a less-expensive solution has been found for the THS roof. More information here.  https://sites.google.com/…/communi…/capital-bond-february-13

Correction: Yesterday’s post (01.11.2018 Thursday Column & Health Corner) brought this response from Toledo City Clerk Michelle Whitten: THIS IS NOT WHAT HAPPENNED!!

Whitten confirmed:
  • Winlock sent a Letter of Intent, dated January 2, 2018 to Toledo, received January 8, 2018 at City Hall - only hours prior to Winlock City Council Meeting.
  • Therefore, no Toledo officials outside of Chief of Police John Brockmueller and Toledo City Clerk Michelle Whitten knew of the Letter at the time of Monday’s Winlock City Council Meeting.
  • Toledo will continue to provide law enforcement services under contract unless and until Toledo City Council receives said Letter of Intent, and considers any action. Chief Brockmueller indicated Toledo Police would continue to provide service as usual.
  • Toledo did not author any Letter of Intent.

The Other Toledo regrets any inconvenience occasioned by earlier inaccuracies or omissions, and welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight.
Thanks to our readers for understanding.

Wednesday I had an appointment in Chehalis, so afterwards I visited The Chip Guy at the little warehouse in Centralia. Despite the long line and wait time, people were patience and well-mannered. Volunteers kept everything orderly and tidy, helping those collecting a carload of boxed food. Passing up pallets of chips, stacks of bread racks plus soda, I gleaned perfect tomatoes and green peppers from boxes next to eggplants & jicama.

Dropping a few bills into the donation jug, I thanked the sign-in lady and was rewarded with a warm smile.

Warehouse opens most Wednesdays and Saturdays. Check link above for changes.

The morning after Toledo Police Chief Brockmueller appealed to Winlock City Council to renew the interlocal law enforcement service contract with Toledo, Winlock Mayor Bradshaw sent his own letter of intent to return Winlock’s own police department, effectively cutting contracted service with Toledo.

Mayor Bradshaw’s letter of intent, dated January 2, reveals why the matter wasn’t up for discussion at Monday’s Council Meeting. More at this link.

Health Corner: Infectious Diseases & Prevention - Or How To Skip The Flu

Sunday Toledo High School will open the doors to an important fundraiser benefiting the family of Baby Titus, in need of 3 surgeries to correct a life-threatening heart condition. Rena Sickles, the mother-to-be, sat down December 30, 2017, and prayed for the words to express the need for virtual quarantine. In part, she wrote:

Well, today is the day. We're scheduled to take off after lunch so Portland can be our temporary home. I don't think it hit me until right now just how soon Titus will be arriving. Although part of me says it's time to fight for my little boy and I'm full of strength from God, there is also a part of me that is shattered and broken. Scared is seriously an understatement. (Please, keep the prayers coming!)
I was debating sharing this for the last few months but now I know I NEED to, so I'll make it short and sweet. IF TITUS COMES IN CONTACT WITH ANY SICKNESS (even a common cold), IT WILL BE A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH FOR HIM!!! With no oxygenated blood getting to his body, he's extremely fragile. Because of this, Andy and I are the only people who they'll even allow to visit him until he starts healing from his first open heart surgery due to it being peak flu season. The boys won't even get to see him. We WANT visitors. We NEED help with the other boys and NEED HELP making things seems as normal as possible for them. We NEED people there for emotional support.
I can't stress this enough, if you are sick, you have sick kids or have been around anyone sick in the last 48 hours, please wait to visit!!!!!!! Whether nauseous, sniffles, stuffy, "allergies", ANYTHING!!!! If we get sick or if we are caring for sick boys, we can't even visit Titus. We're already not able to see him as much as we'd like or hold him at all, so the thought of all this makes me anxious and scared even more.
I mean no offense but the mamma bear in me just woke up and I need to do whatever I can to keep my little fighter healthy, safe and ALIVE!!!

This appeal took me back to 1992, when my brother-in-law was losing his fight with AIDS. His two brothers & their spouses would alternate weekend care to relieve the full-time nurse with the two sisters & their spouses. That same admonition to stay away if we were sick, or had been in contact with anyone ailing, was put to us.

We were absolutely blunt about the edict, and would literally turn coughing visitors to our house around in the hallway and shoo them back out the door, telling them to visit over the phone instead.

Two amazing things happened: people understood (or they didn’t), and that winter marked the first we didn’t pass colds, flu, and bronchitis back and forth for months.

Quarantine worked!

Somewhere around the same time, I chanced to hear a three-minute uninterrupted story passed along by the noted radio personality Paul Harvey (remember “The Rest Of The Story?) wherein Robert Layton received an invitation from his 13yo son’s school announcing a parents meeting to review a new course on (ahem) “health.”

The tale unfolds along an analogous path, with a startlingly similar message: avoidance is the best prevention. Link here. It’s still a sobering story.

More recently I’ve become more keenly aware of exposure - debit card readers with PIN pads we all touch, that tablet we all “sign” on with our finger at the pharmacy, random pens handed to us for filling forms, etc. My dental student & her instructors have ceased proffering a hand when introductions are made; I simply nod my greeting and ignore the handshake.

Many flu sufferers can tell you vaccines didn’t keep sickness away, little comforted that it may have lessened the strength or duration. Who can measure that anyway? And is it true?

My darling neighbor wisely teaches her youngsters to cough politely into their sleeves. I wish everybody did. And they seem to realize I still enjoy them. They know my health is not robust. They’re kids and THEY understand.

So I will continue to enjoy your company from a safe distance, via the phone or Facebook or the Interwebs, wishing you best of health. And slamming the door on your fingers if you forget. Do click on that three minute Robert Layton story. It’s worth the time.

From Toledo School District: Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed January as School Board Recognition Month. This marks the 23rd year of the annual observance initiated by the National School Boards Association in 1995.
The Washington State School Directors’ Association, Association of Educational Service Districts and the broader education community take time in January to honor board members from Washington’s 295 school districts and nine elected educational service district boards.
In Toledo, we're fortunate to have 5 elected directors who give countless hours of service to the children and families of our community. Please join our team in thanking these leaders for their service and their vision for our schools.

Old Biz:
Planters: 22 around town, keeping them watered would be easier with a repurposed riding mower made available to haul a watering trailer.
Gardens: cranberry bushes to be planted along South fence line at City Park. Native Soil Farm volunteered some space to grow plant starts.
Fundraising: Drums recycled as warming barrels with star cutouts will be offered for purchase. Plants will be available at the Vernal Equinox Art Market, Morgan Arts Centre March 24-25. CGT will have a sales table at the Toledo Thursday Market starting in June.
Facebook Page: CGT gardening photos sought from everyone.
Marketing: Tee shirts or aprons with “CGT Volunteer At Work” for workers will be designed by two members. Plant Sales banner    also in the works.
Community involvement: Master Gardener Linda Bird-Sonne will give a Power Point Presentation at Toledo’s BIG Community Meeting March 22, Brian Dennis will be a speaker. Sunflowers starts will be offered to attendees again this year.

New Biz:
This year’s Spring Theme: bulbs
Christmas decor: decorations are down, thanks to a volunteer.
Honor Garden: Dale Pomeroy had stated he would install a retaining curb around the Honor Garden in City Park. One volunteer will explore expanding the Garden. Using a timer to irrigate will be researched.
Old Jailhouse: CGT will look at improving the site, possibly with a pergola or new facade.

Other Biz:
Members should track their volunteer hours to report for grant writing opportunities.
It was agreed CGT should no longer seek independent non-profit status, but remain operating under vision:Toledo umbrella.
Special thanks go out to last year’s volunteers for their community service.

Health Corner: 2017 Year In Review

Published in mindbodygreen on the last day of 2017, this article - 3 Health Discoveries We Should All Know About From 2017 - includes 2 topics covered briefly last year in Health Corner.

Fat, specifically healthy fat, is crucial to your body at a cellular level. You literally cannot live without it. See: Health Corner 09.21.2017.

Likewise, salt is a necessary mineral for life, and restricting intake can actually cause many of the symptoms attributed to too much of it. See: Health Corner 12.07.2017.

It’s no mystery pollution affects every aspect of life on this planet, though my own research has focused mainly on air quality & respiratory ailments. Last summer’s stagnant air conditions combined with high temps and smoke from forest fires as far away as Canada reminded everyone that we take for granted our usually clear, breathable atmosphere. Even high school sports practices were confined to a stifling gym.

In short, salt & fat intake is entirely within your daily control, while pollution will be tackled incrementally - small actions done routinely on a large scale. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Repeat.

As the saying goes, we all live downstream.
