Comment  from School Board member Brad Dykstra in The Chronicle’s article  Yes Vote For Next Toledo Bond Is A No-Brainer by Julie Mcdonald:

We have the opportunity to build a NEW high school with a Distressed Schools Grant from the state and state construction assistance if we are willing to pass at $7 million bond and tax ourselves $0.99/ 1000. A friend of mine handed $7 to a preschooler and then showed her $25. She asked the preschooler, "Would you give me your $7 if I gave you my $25? The preschooler made the trade. Will we?

Andrea Jones posted:

Is anyone else local interested in beginning Spanish language lessons? Kids and/or adults? I have heard a few express interest (and would personally be interested as well). I have someone willing and available to teach a class once or twice a week beginning in May, even throughout the summer! Looking to get a group of 6-8 so we have others to practice with, to keep the cost down, and also make it worth her time and energy. Message me!

Update: For those interested - please post your preferred days/times - thanks!

Billie Washington‎ via Lewis County Permaculture Society writes: My cousin will be visiting the farm periodically this spring and summer, he is a full blooded Lakota from Cheyenne River Sioux, Eagle Butte, SD.
He is an artist. I’ve told him about our community and he is offering to teach some skills when he is here. Smoke tanning, pouches for knives, Tobacco pouches, foraging pouches, almost anything you can think of. The process would be very traditional. Would anyone have interest in this? His wife is a Navajo healer. Let me know. Thank you.

Thanks to Larry Davidson (who happens to live in Colorado and care about Toledo) for sharing this research paper on the dis-economies and drawbacks of school consolidations and loss of small schools in rural communities. It is lengthy but confirms why most feel consolidating Toledo and Winlock does not make good sense. If you don't have time to read it, the good stuff starts on page 18 or just read the summary on page 31. It makes some EXCELLENT points.

Grange member Tom Boone linked a post gone viral on one mother’s shrewd insight into what is wrong with our kids today, originally published March 24, including update. It begins:

In light of the recent shootings in Florida and then recently at our local high school (GMHS) where a boy went into school last week and shot his ex-girlfriend (she died) and then himself (he died) we all ask what is wrong with our kids today?? I may not know all the answers but I think I know one!!

Local astrophysicist Ethan Siegel warned of short-term victory for NASA 2018 Budget:

“Loser: Long-term stability. As big of a fight as it was to get this bill passed and the crippling proposed cuts by the President overturned, it expires on September 30th of this year. All of these battles will likely need to be fought again in the very short term; WFIRST, James Webb, the Office of Education, and NASA’s Earth Science will quite possibly see additional attempts to curtail, cut, or eliminate them entirely. In past administrations, it was rare to see an already funded-and-agreed-upon mission cancelled. If this year is any indication of what’s to come, there will likely be additional battles required to ensure that many of these missions are seen through to fruition.”
Last week, both houses of Congress put forth the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, where after threatening a veto, it was signed into law by President Trump on Friday. On the surface, it looks like a tremendous victory for science across-the-board, as many programs that were threatened to be cut or cancelled had their funding restored. However, it’s extremely important to remember that despite all the efforts that went into overturning the President’s proposed cuts, this victory only extends for 6 month; on September 30th, this $1.3T budget expires. At that point, all of these hard-won victories for science, education, and the American people may need to be battles that are fought all over again. In addition, there are some dangerous new precedents that are set here, including the warmongering “America First National Space Strategy.”
Be pleased with the victories that have just been won in this latest budget fight, but don’t get complacent. The war for the soul of America is just getting started.

Ecological & Social Activist Jake Dailey shared Wednesday:  I just got done with the first ever Rethinking Rural Symposium in Port Townsend. It was a 3 day meeting of the minds of young rural leaders from across the country. We discussed rural community resilience and the issues we experience in rural America. We brainstormed and shared solutions. It’s extremely inspiring to hear the success stories of so many of my millennial peers! The last three days have given me an even bigger passion for building community resilience. Toledo is already on the right track because of some badass young people who care and are shaking stuff up. I’m excited for the great things to come!

Hope to hear from you at next Thursday’s BIG Community Meeting, Jake.

Today: THS Robotics is competing against Wahkiakum HS in a new event for SWIRL: Southwest Washington Interdependent Robotics League.

On Thursday March 15th, starting at 1:00pm,  Wahkiakum School District and Wahkiakum 4H will be hosting the first annual Wahkiakum Wohbot Wohundup. There will fun for all ages as robots run in a variety of events. The robots are built by students from elementary, middle and high school.  There will also be some adult-built robots trying to keep up with the kids'. Come early if you want to tour the "pits" to get up close and personal with the robots and their builders. Doors open at 12:15. Awards are scheduled to be completed by 4:30pm.

There will be a robot-human play, sumo bots, line racing bots, drag racing bots, and more. There will be robot demonstrations and displays including a ferocious fenced dinosaur trying to "bite" fingers of the unwary, a commercial robot avatar like you see in the movies, and quad drones.  The finale will be the brand new event called "WalkUpAndKickEm" ... wherein teams of robots attempt to score points by avoiding getting crushed long enough to cross the other's goal line. There will be turtles and hares, and pixies and behemoths, all teaming up to score points.

Toledo School District will be helping us kick off this inaugural event as the first in a series of robotic encounters being planned for next year in SWIRL, the Southwest Washington Interdependent Robotics League.  Come on in and check out what students are learning in robotics.

Health Corner: On Mold & Illness - Part 1

The fallout from last year’s hurricanes in the US includes mold. But black mold is increasingly prevalent and pernicious, responsible for far more chronic illness than realized even 10 years ago.

My wise friend Ms Brown speculated years back that indoor mold might be a factor in my poor health. At the time, I regained a good deal of lung function following a different treatment plan. Now, however, that regimen has ceased working, and a chance encounter with a woman Tuesday evening who also had late-onset symptoms suggested mold exposure could explain my symptoms.

It’s an overwhelming topic, so I started with Brown’s recommended Dr Mercola, specifically an article from 2011 on recovering from toxic mold exposure, one in a series on mold in the home, beginning with Why Almost All Sinus Infections Are Misdiagnosed and Mistreated.

A few key points:
  • Mold is particularly dangerous for infants and children. There is evidence that some cases of SIDS may be related to toxic mold exposure.
  • Mycotoxins, or the toxins some molds produce, can cross into your brain from your nose and eyes.
  • Many mistakenly believe that simply moving out of a contaminated building will solve the problem, but the toxins adhere to your belongings. If you move with everything you have, you can take the problem with you.
  • Bleach does not destroy all mold, and dead mold spores can cause serious symptoms.
  • Mold in your home, school, or workplace is a serious concern for your health, since up to 40 percent of American schools and 25 percent of homes have mold infestations.
Consider this last point carefully: last week Toledo Schools learned they could receive $10 million toward new construction of a high school facility, contingent upon a successful  - and reduced - bond measure passage. Grandparents who do not connect the dots between indoor air quality concerns in the present structure and the continuing rise in childhood asthma & chronic illnesses are invited to question whether a new building costs more than their cherished grandchildrens’ wellness.

Next: Part 2 -

*Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively. Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived. And miracles take place against all odds.

From Toledo School District Supt. Chris Rust: One of the things I’ve learned in my life is the impact that adverse childhood experiences can have on young people. Childhood trauma creates enormous barriers between a child and their goals. This week, Oprah Winfrey reported on the issue and how trauma informed care can help people overcome the effects of these experiences. The question “what happened to you?” is central to this practice.

Story from 60 Minutes featuring Oprah Winfrey here.

Toledo’s Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel posted: “His work, his life, and his scientific contributions made him an inspiration to millions across the world, including to me. But the combination of his achievements and his affliction with ALS — combined with his meteoric fame — often made him immune to justified criticism. As a result, he spent decades making false, outdated, or misleading claims to the general population that permanently harmed the public understanding of science. He claimed to have solutions to problems that fell apart on a cursory glance; he proclaimed doomsday for humanity repeatedly with no evidence to back such claims up; he ignored the good work done by others in his own field. Despite his incredible successes in a number of arenas, there are some major scientific lessons he never learned. Here’s your chance to learn them now.”

Come learn, for yourself, the 4 scientific ideas that Stephen Hawking never managed to learn and incorporate while he was still alive.

Tech Report: Credit Apps & Remedies After Data Breaches

Fraud protection: You DO know that there’s no vaccination against fraud, right? Protection is an enormous business, but mostly it’s damage control. In essence, such services alert you the livestock was rustled - last month. Much of it happens beyond our control - security breaches like last year’s (2015) Anthem and Premera medical records hack (over 100 million records), and the IRS’s security breach (100,000). Some things are within your control, however. Like credit cards. Check out trusted source Nerdwallet.
~Originally from 04.01.2016 Friday Column

From Gizmodo: In 2017, Equifax tops the list when data breaches are mentioned. Yahoo, RNC, Uber, SVR Tracking (vehicle recovery, VIN’s), Kaspersky, Whole Foods, & 560 million passwords from sources like Adobe, Tumblr & My Space… Well, it’s overwhelming.

First:  head on over to Troy Hunt’s Have I Been Pwned? to determine if your passwords have been affected in this manner.
Follow up: get a password manager that encrypts. Last week’s Tech Report listed several.

Second: get your FTC-approved, truly free (1X/year), no-strings annualcreditreport.com.
MoneyTalksNews explains How to Get Your Free Credit Report in 6 Easy Steps, pointing to massive data breaches as reason to vet your credit report for ID theft.

Summary: whether due to data breaches, ID theft, or simple lack of any credit history, you can improve and monitor your credit.

To be clear, the paddling was via kayak, and not an icy plunge for swimming.

Nobody was injured in Saturday’s house fire but Neumann’s home of 21 years is gone. In true Toledo spirit, neighbors turned to Facebook, establishing 3 drop-off points for clothing donations, a GoFundMe account to cover excess cleanup costs, and the word is out already for housing.

Details on links:
  • Andrea Jones: baseball cleats needed (covered) & drop off for apparel
  • Ashley Fritz: Rachel Zamora Phillipps has offered her business as a drop off
  • Angela Norberg Bacon, TES PTO on clothing sizes for family members: TES drop point
  • GoFundMe page link : contact person Jadee Landry

The Other Toledo declined to include photos here out of respect for the family.
Your understanding is appreciated.

Last Friday’s emergency flood evacuation drill scored far ahead of the 90-120 minutes estimated by Tacoma Power, in case of dam breach upriver from Toledo. Detailed link here.
Picture

Following the drills: Results of the drill from Mrs Bacon “TES was evacuated in 15 minutes. TMS reached the high school in 16 minutes. TMS Life Skills took 28, but it will be faster when the bus doesn’t have to return to the elementary before picking them up.” All of these times are well within the margins for safety. Nice work by staff and students on this first drill.

Native Soil Farm’s Billie Washington writes: This isn’t a very clear picture but wanted to share what I’ve learned from these two geese.
This pair have been coming to the lake every spring to have their little goslings. So I watch what has been claimed as their territory and limit myself to only going to the water when they are elsewhere.
The male goose is the best protector I’ve ever seen. He lets the female feed and he is constantly on point with full attention to any sound, following her lead but never taking his attention from his task.
In today’s world not every pregnant Mother gets the luxury of having someone stand in protection of her. I’m not saying women can’t defend themselves, only that pregnancy is a vulnerable time and having someone there to help take care of the Mother is part of Nature and adds to the health of the child.
Such devotion this Papa goose has to this process is pure beauty. Maybe when we follow the cues from Nature, life will flow in beauty.

PRESS RELEASE

The Unstoppable Ms Berry announced: THS Robotics is competing against Wahkiakum HS in a new event for SWIRL: Southwest Washington Interdependent Robotics League.

Toledo School District reports:

The Legislature funded water testing for 500 schools in the state. TSD requested to be among the first to be tested. Our schools were selected and were tested on Feb 14. 84 fixtures were sampled from TES, TMS and THS. Of the fixtures tested, 8 exceeded the Dept of Health /EPA recommended lead levels of 20 ppm. These fixtures have been disabled and will be replaced with lead-free fixtures. Other fixtures will be cleaned, replaced and/or regularly flushed in accordance with DOH recommendations. When replace and repair is complete, DOH will retest. Lead is everywhere and is impossible to eliminate. TSD wants to reduce everyone’s exposure consistent with DOH and EPA guidelines. A letter was sent home with students today with additional information. If you have questions, please contact the district office.

Health Corner: On ASD* - Guest Post by Ben Maestas

April 2, 2018 is World Autism Awareness Day; April is Autism Awareness month. Local activist & permaculture educator Ben Maestas lend insight into this misunderstood condition in his post below:

Michael Mcreary is a comedian on the Autism spectrum and does a good job of explaining ASD interaction. (Link below)

My daughter just shared this with me, and I about cried... a few times. Sometimes it just feels good to hear others say what you also feel, even if it is not "exactly" how you feel. People who cannot communicate well often are judged as having nothing to say. As a child the Hyperlexia portion of my Autism had me devouring libraries of books. As a young teen I would hunt out college books on my favorite subjects but when I tried to speak to others, several obstacles prevented me "communicating" my thoughts - “you’re only a kid what do you know? Why are you staring at the floor and not looking at me while you talk? You’re not smart, you’re just weird.” Not knowing how to start the subject in a way that evolves to my point. And the worst was half-sentences of left-over thoughts. I would literally start talking half-way through a thought as if I had been speaking throughout the thought and never when we had been talking on said subject. It took me awhile to process and take on social conversation, so another common habit was to say 'what?' whenever anyone spoke to me. They could have just been saying hi, and I did hear them but I needed time to process. This annoyed a lot of people.
I learned tricks of survival along the road, I took writing to heart, joined theater every chance i could, studied endless eastern and western psychological and philosophical outlooks, learned to make eye contact long enough to punctuate a thought and not look "as" awkward and also how to move my eyes around the room while interacting to seem less like I am in a trance and more interested in my surroundings (although I am more aware of my surroundings in what looks like that trance state), developed the art of listening (luckily, my family is patient with my "what" way of listening) and how to let go of an obsessive need for routine (now replaced with a two hour morning routine - and this in no way implies loss of routine) and many other things to help me along, like technology and social networks (yes, you help me!).
Most importantly I learned how to quit judging myself as a broken person but began focusing on my potential. It may take me a decade to work on one small issue but I know my potential with every hurdle I overcome, and this gives me strength to be patient. It also helps to hear others share their successes; it reminds us we are not alone and that others are sharing their potentials as well!!

From Toledo School District: We all mourn the loss of 17 children and adults in Parkland FL along with the victims and families of other mass shootings in the past 20 years. As the students and staff of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return to school for the first time in two weeks today (Wednesday), it is a good time to reflect on what parents can do to help children manage the feelings that these events can bring up. http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/talking-to-children.aspx
TSD works with local law enforcement agencies and our local fire department to develop crisis response plans. We are currently training in a program recommended by the Lewis County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Security to respond to an attack such as the one in Parkland. This is just one of many hazards that we prepare, train and drill for. Student safety is our number one priority at all times at TSD.
