Revisited: Stopped in at Toledo Community Library Wednesday afternoon for a visit with Charlie. Members of the Page Turners group were discussing their favorite individual non-fiction works before choosing next month’s reading selection. Other patrons came in and out to pick up books ordered from Timberland Regional Library, bought new reads from the available sales carts, swapped out movies & audio series.

Charlie asked me to tell you they now have movies on Blu-ray, and a large donation of sci-fi books including some on the sales rack. My own torrid affair with sci-fi began with Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot, blazed through his Robot, Foundation and Galactic Empire series before moving on to Ray Bradbury, Jules Verne, & Frank Herbert. These classics foretold the future with uncanny accuracy; local authors Ethan Siegel (Treknology) and Jake Blake (Sunburned & This Too Shall Collapse) erase the line between between present and future in their works.

ICYMI: If you didn’t make Sunday’s Earth Day plant & seed exchange event at Camp Singing Wind, you can console yourself with a great selection of veggie or & flower seeds in the overflowing Seed Swap bin at the front counter. Bring your own envelopes and make this year’s garden for next to nothing.

Library open until 7 PM Wednesday, 5 PM Thursday & Saturday.

*Note: August 13 will mark four years since the doors first opened. Hard to remember what Toledo was ever like without it.

Health Corner: Review - MBG: What Are Obesogens and Where Are They Found

While I seldom venture into the realm of weight loss, this article caught my eye when I was exploring potential asthma triggers and endocrine disorders (thyroid & hormone disruptors).

Says the author:
It’s not necessarily food itself, but how it’s grown, harvested, stored, and cooked that has become the catalyst to the growing obesity epidemic…
~David Friedman ND

PFAS, PFOA, BPA, HFCS & Phthalates - What are they, where they are, & how to avoid them

From perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) & Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in non-stick cookware, plastic bottles & containers plus fast-food wrappers, to bisphenol A (BPA) in commonly found in food packaging, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC’s) have been linked to rising rates of obesity & health disorders since 1990’s and before.

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is more hazardous to your health than table sugar, while phthalates are found in dairy products due to plastic tubing used in milking cows. That plastic-y smell when you open up a new shower curtain? That’s the phthalates.

Excerpt from MBG: What Are Obesogens and Where Are They Found*

Research from the University of Texas Health Science Center and the U.S. government suggests that many of the most popular supermarket foods - including dairy, meats, condiments, drinks, and pizza - are contaminated with a variety of plastic chemicals called phthalates. In addition to obesity, these chemicals have been linked to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, altered reproductive development, and male fertility issues. While it may seem like you can’t escape the plethora of obesogens surrounding you, it is possible to avoid exposure to many of them. Knowledge is power, and by paying attention to labels and how your food is grown, raised, and packaged, you can live a healthier and leaner life.

    As May 18 approaches...
Toledo’s Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel posted: “Every few months, a volcanic eruption occurs on Earth, with lava flows and enormous plumes of volcanic ash. These small eruptions might produce only ~0.01 cubic kilometers of ash, while large, rare ones can produce thousands. Unlike the result of combustion, however, what we call volcanic ash isn’t ash at all.”

Hi everyone... I wanted to give a heads up for everyone that goes to Walmart in Chehalis... first off... The Chip Guy advised: A WARNING ABOUT ROMAINE LETTUCE WAS ISSUED FROM THE CDC AN HOUR AGO (04.20.2018)...
IF YOU GOT SOME FROM THE WAREHOUSE THE OTHER DAY, CHECK TO SEE IF IT FROM YUMA ARIZONA. IF SO, THROW IT OUT,
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, THEN THROW IT OUT JUST TO BE SAFE.

Update from Claims Journal (04.23.2018): Previously, CDC officials had only warned against chopped romaine by itself or as part of salads and salad mixes. But they are now extending the risk to heads or hearts of romaine lettuce.

Katie Gail, TES PTO, shared: Many of you know that there will be some openings on the PTO Board this coming June. We've had a lot of questions so we thought we would post the most common ones that we've had. Please feel free to post questions in the comments for us to answer.
1. What are the common duties for each position?
2. What are the benefits of being on the board?
3. How often does the PTO board meet?
4. Does the new PTO Board have to sponsor the same events?
5. As a board member, do I have to attend every event that PTO sponsors?

Health Corner: All Over The Board - Sleep, ADHD, Hormones, Genes

Popular Science ran this article: If you love staying up late and sleeping in, doing otherwise might actually hurt your health, adding: Here’s one more way our modern sleep schedules might be killing us.

Andrea Jones shared a link from The Atlantic: Exercise Is ADHD Medication.

MindBodyGreen linked this New York Times piece: Reading Aloud to Young Children Has Benefits for Behavior and Attention.

Science Daily asks: does ADHD cause sleeplessness, or does sleeplessness cause ADHD?

Mark Hyman, MD & Functional Medicine Practitioner, asked: Half Of The Population Is Deficient In This Ancient Hormone. Are You? Hint: those of us in Northern climes are chronically lacking.

WholeNewMom updated Our Family's Amazing Hemp / CBD Experience in which her son with Asperger’s Syndrome (an autism-spectrum disorder) saw significant decrease in stress-related panic attacks, and increased agility, social skills and handling household chores. The rest of the family noted various physical and behavioral improvements within weeks, or even days.
If, like me, you’re wondering what all the fuss is about CBD, her thorough research will answer questions.

Filed under “Inconclusive” is one article that casts doubt on popular genetics tests when compared side by side: How DNA Testing Botched My Family's Heritage, and Probably Yours, Too.
Says the author, Gizmodo Senior Editor Kristen V Brown:  I decided to conduct an experiment. I mailed my own spit samples to AncestryDNA, as well as to 23andMe and National Geographic. For each test I got back, the story of my genetic heritage was different—in some cases, wildly so.

Lifehacker’s Beth Skwarecki also challenged these DTC (Direct-To-Consumer) products in her piece: Mail-Order Genetic Tests May Turn Up a Lot of False Positives where one (very small) study returned a 40% false positive reading.

As for my own test? One result: that I “probably drink more coffee than most people” despite the fact I am the offspring of two confirmed tea drinkers.

Issued by http://weather.gov/ at 8:53 PM PDT Mon Apr 16 2018, including Cascades of Pierce and Lewis Counties:

...HEAVY RAINFALL OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS HAS LED TO AN
INCREASED THREAT OF LANDSLIDES IN WESTERN WASHINGTON...

Rainfall of up to 2 to 5 inches over the lowlands and foothills of western Washington in the past several days has once again increased soil moisture to high levels. Light to moderate showers are expected today that could add up to only a half an inch to an inch in some places. But with these wet soils that could be enough to trigger a landslide or two.

This elevated threat will persist through Tuesday before slowly decreasing over the following few days...More

Tech Tuesday: Alternatives To

Some time back B.T.* I found myself in need of updating my ancient IT skills. Don’t Spend A Dime by James Floyd Kelly was my handbook, comparing free, open-source or SaaS software with proprietary brands.

AlternativeTo similarly ranks software by crowdsource votes. I relied heavily on this one to shorten my learning curve.

If you follow The Other Toledo on Facebook, you’ve seen linked posts about LibreOffice, my long-time go-to for office suite software. As my daily driver is currently a Chromebook, Google Docs gets the job done for me.

GroovyPost re-introduces The Complete Guide For Reddit Newbies – What To Do & How To Do It, describing Reddit as “very much unlike Facebook or Twitter, for better or worse” and lists a few reasons to give it a try, including a few popular subreddits to get you started.
(They also have The Beginner’s Guide To Google Sheets, The Online Rival To Excel.)

ROKU replaced expensive TV service in this household several years ago; ToledoTel still offers a free set top box (with $99 one-time installation including HD connection cable). Joining the cord-cutters movement saves over $100/month.

Not for everyone, prepaid phone plans operate on established networks owned by major carriers, listed specifically in this Lifewire article updated January 1, 2018, including pros & cons. In shopping for an emergency phone, I got a great review from a satisfied TracFone user (10 years) who explained service is sold by the minute, not by the month like the rest.

What’s your favorite Alternative Tech software, app, device or service?
What brand-name tech would you never give up?

Hope this little guy was reunited with his human. Kind young woman managed to scoop him up after I followed him from Jackson Highway South late yesterday afternoon, back across the bridge & into Toledo, running down the middle of the NB lane on SR 505, heedless of big trucks & traffic, to his home on Fourth.
Must have slipped his collar.

To his human: you owe a deep debt of thanks to the Powers That Be for this little fellow's life, and the efforts of your neighbors for his return.

MAP Enrichment Programs after-school clubs report:
We had our week of spring term makers clubs “Nature Works” and “STEAM Works”! We planned some fun activities and intriguing projects for the term together, including community service components in each club.
“Nature Works” club members made seed bombs from clay, soil and wildflower seeds to add beauty to areas in our neighborhoods that need a little cheering! So many creative and heartwarming ideas in this club - I am eager to support their goals!

In “STEAM Works” we built a remote controlled mechanical robot and also learned and experimented with coding principles as we made tracks and mazes for “Ozobot” - we even dressed it up and made it dance! Looking forward to what these kids choose to learn and teach me and each other this term!

Toledo School District posted this notice of their second Flood Preparedness Plan drill:
Picture
Image courtesy of Toledo School District

If disaster strikes one of our schools, we will move all students in all schools to The Mission on Spencer Road. This reduces traffic at schools (which may be under water, unsafe for occupancy or a crime scene).

This coming Tuesday (April 17, 2018), we will be training students and staff on our Parent Reunification plans at The Mission. This is the second step in our flood preparedness plan.

We'll be evacuating students to high ground and then to The Mission. We will off-load students to specific rooms at the site and go through our training for parent reunification. When finished, all students will be returned to their school for dismissal at the regular time.

If you see our buses out or you arrive at school during the drill and no one is there, stand by. We'll be back by noon. This is part of our work to prepare and keep all of our students and staff safe in the event of an emergency.

Citizens for Great Toledo Schools shared Toledo School District's post: Rep. Richard DeBolt will be addressing the Toledo School Board at their April meeting on the 19th at 7 p.m. at THS.

Rep. DeBolt was instrumental in obtaining a grant to build a new high school in Toledo. He will be on hand to talk about the Distressed Schools Grant and the intent of the legislation. The community is invited to attend.

The School District said in a separate post: The TSD quarterly newsletter will be delivered to all postal patrons in the district in the next few days.

Inside, you'll find a postage-paid insert that asks if you think that the board should place a $7 million bond on the ballot to take advantage of the $18 million grant to build a new Toledo High School. Should we do this? Yes or no?
There is room on the card for your name and number if you have questions or criticisms that you'd like for me to address. There is also room for comments on the card if you'd like to remain anonymous.
This is one of the ways we're listening to our community about this opportunity.

This substation provides power to approximately 1,350 of the PUD’s customers in Northern Centralia, Galvin, Independence, Fords Prairie, Little Hanaford, Big Hanaford, Lincoln Creek and surrounding areas. The outage will take place 12:01am the morning of Friday the 13th until approximately 2:00am."

Common Ground Toledo convened last night for a progress report, and to outline this year’s plans for upgrades and expansion.

Last month’s Vernal Equinox Art Show & Plant Sale was a great success, providing seed money for planter and garden improvements from The Big Five (City Boat Launch parking area planters) to Kemp Olson Park’s Honor Garden expansion.

Tulips donated by De Goedes producing great colors in downtown planters now. Post Office may see an evergreen added near front door soon. Watering planters in hot weather by downtown businesses will be encouraged this year, as remote garden spots such as the Oregon Trail Marker will require water brought in by volunteers.

Historic jail area beautification proposed, “chain saw party” to dispose of giant trunk section in Kemp Olson Park (or donation to area carver willing to haul), compost convoy to import material to CSW for amending soil for gardens and planters, and more.

CGT's MISSION STATEMENT:
Creating and maintaining a green and colorful presence in Toledo by caring for the design, beautification, and maintenance of planter boxes, gardens, and specified common areas.

Pre-registration also helps organizers know how many soil test kits to bring to the class, which will be limited to 30 people. To pre-register, call (360)740-1216.

Thursday morning forecast from US National Weather Service Portland Oregon:

Strong southerly winds are possible Friday night and Saturday.
There is moderate confidence that the beaches and headlands could see gusts to 75 mph, coastal communities and exposed ridges in the Coast Range could see gusts to 65 mph, and inland valleys could see gusts 40 to 50 mph. These strong winds could produce local power outages, falling trees and power lines and dangerous crosswinds.
Visit www.weather.gov/portland for the latest forecasts.

If you really want to scare yourself, reminisce over this post & video on a 1972 Vancouver WA tornado that left 6 people dead.

Speaking of severe weather, Toledo’s own astrophysicist Ethan Siegel posted:
“Given that 2017 saw more than $250B worth of damage caused by hurricanes to North America alone, even a large investment in setting up and deploying a large-scale network of these deep water perforated pipes could quickly pay dividends in damage and death reduction. The economic return-on-investment could be tremendous, and it would protect our infrastructure and prevent another Katrina-like disaster more effectively and inexpensively than any other plan. Health Corner: Mold & Illness Part 2*

Last night, a reader posted: I just got a call that my brothers ex wife suddenly passed away this evening from an asthma attack.
I’m done with today.

Following last month’s encounter with a woman who also had late-onset symptoms, my Naturopathic doctor listened carefully to my story & recommended a Mold Sensitivity Panel for me. Updates to follow.

As early as 2003, the NCIB has recognized “multiple health complaints attributable to confirmed exposure to mixed-molds infestation in water-damaged buildings,” and Dr Sara Gottfried MD published her article Mold Illness: What It Is and How You Know if You Have It in which she lists a constellation of symptoms and saying, “See how easily mold poisoning could go unnoticed, or mistaken for other conditions?”

Dr Ritchie Shoemaker, author of Surviving Mold: Life in the Era of Dangerous Buildings, adds: Approximately 24 percent of the population is genetically vulnerable to mold toxicity; they have a certain immune response gene (HLA-DR).

Noteworthy was a new exemption from my homeowners insurance around that same time - mold damage remediation. The Centers for Disease Control recently updated their roster of PDF fact sheets on mold cleanup. More recently, HGTV revealed in Mold Remediation and Removal Costs | HGTV: The cost can average anywhere from $500 to $6,000 and is hard to identify until the entire scope of the infestation is considered.

ServPro, a recognized name in clean-up answers “Mold Removal” vs. Remediation - What’s The Difference?

EPA offers this outline on the process including scope & questions you need to consider.

Next: Mold & Illness Part 3 - What You Can Do

MAPS Program coordinator Andrea Jones shared: Great first MAP camp volunteer meeting tonight! To those who came and those who couldn’t make it tonight but who messaged me your thoughts and ideas, thank you!Your feedback and ideas are so helpful! If you missed the meeting but want to learn more or be involved please message me, this is going to be such a great opportunity for the kids and we can use all the help we can get to make it a truly wonderful experience!

Also: Does anyone happen to collect bottle caps? Willing to share? We have some mural projects planned and already have collected a couple thousand (from friends and neighbors!) but need more - help us out?!

Friends - Please save your bottle caps! We will use them for garden art and other mural projects! Also if you have old canning lids (the flat round part that only seals once) we can use those too - thank you so much!
