PRESS RELEASE
Date: June 27, 2018
Contact: Lee Napier, Director
Phone: 360.740.1146
Release #: 1

Lewis County Burn Restrictions

Effective 12:01 A.M., July 1, 2018 Lewis County Board of County Commissioners and Lewis County Fire Marshal will be enacting burn restrictions on outdoor burning for all of unincorporated Lewis County, Washington.
After careful review, of the current and extended weather forecast, the Lewis County Community Development Director and the Fire Marshal have determined that current weather conditions within Lewis County have created substantial fire dangers throughout Lewis County, and that there is a need to enact restriction on outdoor burning on all lands regulated by the County of Lewis, EXCEPT for recreational campfires in designated campgrounds and on private lands if built in the following manner:
• The campfire shall be no greater than 3-feet in diameter and have a ring constructed of metal, stone or brick 8-inches above surface with a 2-foot wide area cleared down to exposed soil surrounding the outside of the pit.
• The campfire shall have an area at least 10-feet around it cleared of all flammable material and at least 20-feet of clearance from overhead flammable materials or fuels.
• The campfire must be attended at all times by a responsible person at least 16-years old with the ability to extinguish the fire with a shovel and a 5-gallon bucket of water or with a connected and charged water hose.
• Completely extinguish campfires by pouring water or moist soil in them and stirring with a shovel until all parts are cool to the touch. The use of self-contained camp stoves is encouraged as an alternative.
The burning restriction DOES apply to applicants with a current open burning permit. The current burning permit expiration date will NOW be 12:01 am on July 1.
The burning restrictions will remain in effect until such discontinuance is modified or rescinded by the Board of County Commissioners. A public announcement of the lifting of the burn restrictions will be released to the public at that time. For further information concerning outdoor burning and/or the restrictions being imposed, please contact Doyle Sanford, Lewis County Fire Marshal, at (360) 740-2696. The Fire Marshal’s office is in the Lewis County Public Services building, located at 2025 NE Kresky Avenue, Chehalis, Washington.

Health Corner: DIY Household Cleaners, First Aid Remedies*

Health Corner: Are there household cleaners that are better for your health? Remedies safe for the whole family? Cheaper alternatives?

Yes, yes and yes!

White vinegar and baking soda are the foundation of most DIY household cleaners, inexpensive and non-toxic to boot. Both deodorize, and vinegar is antibacterial as well.

apartmenttherapy.com has a page of Cleaning Basics including using hydrogen peroxide.

From thekitchn.com, 10 Clever Ways To Clean With A Lemon, and 7 Things You Can Clean With Salt.

Used coffee grounds deodorize your fridge, scour your pots and pans, and remove strong food odors from your hands, such as garlic and fish.

Cornstarch is particularly effective on oily food stains, and one cup of cornstarch in a tepid bath provides sunburn relief. It also replaces talc as baby powder, safer for all ages.

One reader talked about coconut oil’s natural antifungal, antibacterial and antibiotic properties, which healed chronically cracked infected skin, athlete's foot and unhealthy toenails after years of failed OTC and prescription remedies.

First aid: yellow jacket stings are intensely painful - I know! That little spice jar of meat tenderizer, mixed into a paste with water, halted the burn instantly.
Q: since it IS meat tenderizer, how long do you leave it on your skin?
A: 30 minutes.

More first aid: mix up your own freezer ice packs - 1 part rubbing alcohol & 3 parts water in a sealable plastic bag (freezer bags hold up longer). You can make up a batch of these and be the star of your soccer team for pennies.

My favorite white vinegar hack? Nothing else I found works better to remove really smelly odors from dogs, even skunk. Really. Half-and-half water & vinegar is recommended, but even pups with sensitive skin can tolerate full strength dousing. You’ll want to rinse the vinegar off when your nose is happy again.

Looking Ahead: Pets & Fireworks

Only one week until 4th of July...

PetMD.com posts Top Ten Fourth Of July Pet Safety Tips article, slideshow version too.
Affixing ID to collars is paramount, should a frightened pet escape. Microchipping is gaining popularity.

Pethub.com writes: Do you know what day is historically the busiest day of the year in animal shelters all across the country? It’s the FIFTH of July. Do you know why? Yup, you guessed it… fireworks!
According to the ASPCA, the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy estimates that less than 2% of cats and only 15-20% of dogs entering shelters are ever reunited with their families!

Cesar Millan offers advice on Keeping your dog safe when the fireworks start. Desensitizing your dog is critical:  The best way to prepare your dog for fireworks is to make sure he’s comfortable with the sound in advance. While this is a simple process, it can take time — possibly three or four months of playing the recorded sound of fireworks for your dog at an increasingly louder volume before he eats, before a walk, and before affection and play.
This will condition him by association to hear the sound and interpret it as something good. While you can try this method over only a week or two, in such a short time span it should only be used in conjunction with one or more of the other tips. In any case, play the firework sounds.

If your dog is anxious or frightened by fireworks, your veterinarian can prescribe a sedative; there are homeopathic remedies available as well, and the Merck Veterinary Manual lists Benadryl as an option: The standard dosage for oral Benadryl is 1 mg per pound of body weight, given 2-3 times a day. Most drug store diphenhydramine tablets are 25 mg, which is the size used for a 25 pound dog. Always double check the dosage before giving an over the counter medication.

Some recommend using a ThunderShirt along with Benadryl: these wraps are now available for felines as well as canines (though I admit most cats I’ve known barely tolerate “playing dress-up” for children under ideal circumstances).

Tech Tuesday: Could Win10 April 2018 Update Wipe Your Desktop?

Microsoft forums were overwhelmed with user issues after installing the update. One comment went like this:
Normally I completely disable windows updates because 10 out 10 times my computer gets broken it's because of windows updates, but somehow this new update managed to install even after the service was disabled.

Tech Republic wrote: ...users found that the "restart and install" prompt for the Windows 10 update led to a blank screen with a message saying:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted.

The screen has no icons and a few users were only able to remedy the problem with the help of another PC...

With the help of Durham-based repair shop Computer Cellar, The Register traced the majority of user problems back to Avast Antivirus… Their step-by-step guide takes users through remedies and suggests deleting Avast. Windows has not responded to furor over the problem...

ZDNet confirmed more recently: Last week saw a surge in complaints from users stuck on a black screen after updating to 1803. Some users blamed the issue on Avast antivirus, but the security company denied it was the cause.
However, Microsoft has since confirmed that the issue is caused by a clash between 1803 and Avast antivirus…

The update has also caused devices to freeze when using Chrome, and more black-screen problems on Dell Alienware PCs. Last week Microsoft also released bug fixes for Intel and Toshiba SSDs.

*Windows10 version 1803 is the April 2018 Update.

Cheese Days Toledo Washington posted Episode 4 of 7: The Legend Of Bigfoot: Lost & Lonely

The Legend of Bigfoot is coming to Toledo Cheese Days July 12-15!
Bigfoot has lost his way! Can he find help while out on the open road?

***

Word arrived Saturday my Uncle Bill had gone on to his reward. His health had been in decline for a long time after he lost his bride a few years back, and he wished nothing more than to join her in The Great Beyond. Recognizing this desire, I penned a blogpost about his impact in my childhood and later years. It seems a fitting eulogy.

12.09.2011 My Uncle Bill

As I was growing up, my Uncle Bill seemed larger than life. Air Force Reserve, member of the Mountaineers, doting uncle to his niece, the only member of my extended family I knew.

I considered him my rich uncle, and I don't recall him ever arriving without a gift for me. Before my teens, these gifts evolved into experiences rather than material presents - summer camp, day trips, Scottish Highland events, memory makers that never break, wear out or expire.

In a tumultuous childhood, he represented stability. He always showed up, kept his promises, dependable. He funded my Girl Scout excursions, hauled me to museums, the science center. He took me on my first plane ride, expanding my picture of the world. Perhaps my early country-wide wanderings had their beginnings in that flight.

He put himself through college to get an engineering degree, acquired a pilot license and bought a small plane, climbed peaks with mountaineers in Washington State, and carried the first "portable" 2-way HAM radio to the summit of Mt. Rainier. The story goes that the radio out-weighed him by several pounds.

I remember him as a tall, handsome man, handlebar mustache, athletic, brilliant. He taught firearms handling classes, knew military history (is there any other kind?) back to ancient times, and served in the Korean War. Leaping tall buildings would not have surprised me.

Best of all, he loved cats. I think this is the part of him I treasured most. We both spoke cat, from the blue-bloods to the meanest alley cat. Their independence and agility, power and beauty appealed to me, and, I think, to him. Cat radar remains one of my litmus tests, amazingly accurate.

Uncle Bill married in his 40's, trading in bachelorhood for family life. All that love came to rest on a woman strong enough to recognize the warmth in his soul, and respect enough to share her own. First the grandchildren, then the great-grandchildren, came to know the loving, humble man that I know as Uncle Bill. And they tightened that circle when he bid the love of his life a lingering farewell until they meet again in the next life.

He doesn't pretend to understand why loved ones are wrenched away, even while he walks daily with his God. Faith takes over where neither logic nor reason can satisfy his great Why? Still he prays, still he believes, even without knowing if he will ever find out. Meanwhile, Earthbound, he is reborn again as each new great-grandchild arrives, to be that larger-than-life hero in their memories, maybe the greatest gift anyone can be.

Guest Post: When The Crowd Doesn’t Eat 288 Donuts and Gallons Of Coffee

Since turning the corner in April 2016, my return to health has been remarkable if glacial in velocity. So one of my favorite newsletters is Snail Pace Transformation.
This recent post, reprinted here by permission of the author, reminded me of my adopted hometown’s generous spirit & waste-not philosophy.

Dear Readers,
Saturday we hosted a graduation open house for our son Aiden at our home. We had it from 9 to noon and served donuts and coffee.

When the event was over my son was left with a pile of “Congratulations Graduate” cards with money and gift cards inside and we were left with dozens of leftover donuts and gallons of leftover coffee. I had seriously overbought for the event.

I was staring at the leftovers wondering what on earth we were going to do with them, especially since donuts very quickly go stale. My husband came up behind me and whispered a great idea into my ear. Being an RN who works ER at a neighboring hospital at least one weekend a month he immediately thought of all the nurses working that Saturday at the ER to make sure those dealing with health emergencies got the care they needed.

So off we went to our local ER to deliver baked fresh that morning donuts and coffee for all the workers to enjoy. We also delivered a dozen donuts and one container of coffee to a friend who was unable to attend the event but LOVES coffee and donuts with a passion. She was touched that we would drive out to deliver them. She didn't mind that the coffee was cold by the time we got it to her, she just made it into a big pitcher of her yummy iced coffee.

Delivering those donuts and coffee reminded me that there is no greater feeling in the world than sharing a surplus. Hoarding up anything beyond what we really need to store simply becomes waste, but when we share it we and those we share it with reap the benefits.

What “too much” are you holding onto? Let it go while it is still useful to those who could make good use of it.

Thanks to Victoria Huizinga of Snail Pace Transformations for permission to reprint this article here.

Lewis County Permaculture Society‘s Chrys Ostrander shared an update:

Back in May, the US House of Representatives voted to REJECT a House version of the Farm Bill. The partisan House version was very bad for farmers, bad for low-income eaters, bad for the environment.

Despite the 'NO' vote, the bad House version is not dead. A "motion to reconsider" was passed allowing another House floor vote on the same bill that will likely occur on Friday, June 22.

TAKE ACTION:
Call your U.S. Representatives and urge them to vote NO on the House version of theFarm Bill: 1 202-224-3121.
Here’s a sampling of what's wrong with the House version, taken from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition website:

Conservation – the House bill erases support for resource stewardship on 70 million acres (that’s an area the size of Nevada!) of working farm and ranchland by completely eliminating the Conservation Stewardship Program.

Local food – the House bill abandons local farmers by cutting all funding for several programs that invest in helping farmers connect to local and regional buyers and in improving healthy food access.

Beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers – the House bill misses the mark by failing to invest more in beginning farmers, military veteran farmers, and farmers of color. With the average age of farmers continuing to rise, the status quo is not enough to ensure the success of these key farmer communities.

Crop insurance and commodities – the House bill opens major new loopholes allowing for unlimited subsidies that will continue to distort land prices and create an unfair playing field for farmers.

According to the National Organic Coalition, the House bill zeros out funding for the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program, and significantly cuts certification cost share assistance through the Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) Act as well. It proposes changes to the National Organic Standards Board (that was designed to maintain the intgrity of USDA's National Organic Program) that are unnecessary and weaken the authority of the Board

And to top off that list of bad proposals in the House version are profound changes that would limit access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) through eligibility restrictions, benefit cuts, and/or program changes that will hurt both our agricultural community and the nutrition needs of low-income residents of Washington State and the nation.

The U.S. Senate is working on its own Farm Bill version. While not perfect, the Senate process has been far more bipartisan than in the House and contains some positive aspects.

Additional posts in the near future will have information of action needed regarding the Senate Farm Bill version, so stay tuned! Call your U.S. Representative today: REJECT the House version of the Farm Bill. 1 202-224-3121.

Here's some current info re the Farm Bill from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition:

Also under Lewis County Permaculture Society, Bryan Castro asks:

Hello everyone! I am a beekeeper who specializes in live bee rescues. I am desperately looking for somewhere I can keep a few colonies of bees, even temporarily. I put my website up thinking I would have time before the phone started ringing, and I am suddenly overwhelmed with calls from people wanting bees removed. I am completely on hold until I get somewhere to put them after I rescue them. I am also looking for apprentice beekeepers that I can train to help me. Please contact me if you are interested in helping me out!

Open House features hands on classes
Learn to build hugelkultur, make worm compost bin

For Immediate Release June 15, 2018

Contact: Melanie Case, Recycling Program Coordinator
Lewis County Solid Waste Utility 360-740-1452

The WSU Lewis County Master Recycler Composter volunteers will host an open house at their Compost Demonstration site at the Central Transfer Station in Centralia on Saturday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tours of the site and two classes will be featured.

Beginning at 10 a.m. volunteers will demonstrate how to build a hugelkultur, a composting raised bed. Hugelkultur, which is German for “hill culture”, is a great alternative to burning branches and tree debris.

“This simple bed can transform your dirt and woody debris into an active soil by harnessing the power of decomposition, much like a nurse logs in a forest,” explained Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the Lewis County Solid Waste Utility, which operates the transfer stations and works with the MRC volunteers to maintain the demonstration site.

Hugelkultur mounds retain moisture, help property owners avoid off-site hauling of wood debris, provides long-term enrichment to soils, is inexpensive to build and is easy to manage.

A worm composting class will begin at 11 a.m. Class participants will learn how worms can eat kitchen waste and make a great medium to add nutrients to their soil. They will also build a worm bin – complete with red wiggler worms – to take home, so they can immediately start composting. The worm bin supplies are limited to one per family, while supplies last.

In addition to the classes, volunteers will be on hand to provide tours of the compost demonstration area and the worm shed, and answer questions about recycling, composting and becoming an MRC volunteer.

Anyone with questions about the open house may call 360-740-1216 or email art.fuller@lewiscountywa.gov.

Gracie’s Surgery Update: Local celebrity mascot Gracie Whiteside GoFundMe campaign posted the third update...

We received Gracie’s cancer biopsy and the Vet is very pleased with the results. Gracie has clean margins and is cancer free in the tissue beneath where the tumor was removed. It was a stage 2 low grade tumor with a low chance that it will re-occur.

We are so happy that our little Gracie got a clean bill of health. She is slowly recovering and is getting back to her silly and sassy little self. A neat little row of stitches on her back-left leg will get removed next week and the surgical area looks to be healing well without infection.

Thanks again for all the love, support and donations so Gracie could get this surgery done. We are blessed beyond measure to have such kind family, friends and Facebook connections that know how much our little Gracie means to us. All your generous donations helped to pay for the surgery in full which has brought us an extra measure of peace. A HUGE THANK YOU for all the kindness.

Gary, Kathy and Gracie too

Lewis County Solid Waste Utility shared:

If you think you may be having well water issues or just want to know the quality of your water, Lewis County Public Health & Social Services (LCPHSS) can test it for you.
Picture
Image courtesy LC Solid Waste Utility

Two, simple $28 tests will accurately determine whether your well has coliform bacteria or nitrates in the water.
Coliform bacteria are organisms that are present in the environment and in the feces of all warm-blooded animals and humans. Coliform bacteria presence in drinking water indicates that disease-causing organisms (pathogens) could be in the water system.
Nitrates are chemicals found in most fertilizers, manure and liquid waste discharged from septic systems. It reduces the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen, which can lead to serious health problems.
The first step to having your water tested is to purchase sample bottles on the third floor of the Public Health Building, at 360 NW North St. in Chehalis. Hours to purchase sample bottles are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm, excluding holidays. The bottles come with instructions for taking accurate water samples. The LCPHS lab is Washington State certified to test for coliform and nitrates. A $28 fee per test covers the cost of the bottle and each test requested.
The second step is to return the samples to one of the following locations. You will be notified of the results.
• LCPHSS Building, 360 NW North Street, Chehalis
Coliform tests accepted Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, 8 am to 4:30 pm
Nitrates tests accepted Mondays and Tuesdays only, 8 am to 4:30 pm

• Coliform and nitrates tests may be dropped off by 9:30 am on the first Monday of the month at: - Silver Creek Post Office
- Morton City Hall
- Randle Post Office
- Packwood Post Office
If a holiday occurs during the first week a month, drop-off changes to the 2nd Monday by 9:30 am. Drop-off only at these locations. There are no testing bottles for purchase.
If you have water testing questions, you can call (360) 740-1237 or (360) 740-1222.

Additionally: (It is) strongly recommended to test for bacteria at least every year and for nitrate at least every three years. Systems with nitrate concentrations greater than 3.0 ppm should be tested more frequently.

I am the youngest of the remaining males in the Charger lineage. I have two living  older brothers. Melvin Charger and Norman Charger.

My oldest living brother Melvin Charger who has been blind since a child from an accident , has recently become progressively ill and is now in hospice care in Minnesota. He is 80 yrs old. Throughout the years I had only three opportunities to visit him in my life. Now, due to his weakening heart and a progressive lung cancer, in the words of those close to Melvin and his physicians, he soon will make his journey home...

Summer Camps Coordinator Annie Jones invites:
Toledo Friends! Want to be involved in making summer adventure camps magical and awesome for kids in our community? Here’s how you can help:
There are 4 kids signed up for camps who are in need of partial scholarships and one in need of a full scholarship. Can you help?
We need a few more guest volunteers Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week in July to come read a script/story to the kids at 1:30-3 or assist with a craft or field game (supplies and instructions provided) from 3-3:30. Can you help?
See Details here

The supportive response of this community last summer is the reason MAP was able to get rolling and provide summer and after school programs for so many kids throughout the year, including those in financial need! Let’s do it again - this time we’re giving kids the chance to experience a taste of real summer adventure camp, getting outside, active, and engaged with their world in meaningful ways, learning lots while having fun and making memories!
Thanks in advance.

End of year garden science: Transplanting!

The seedlings didn't do great this year, probably due to erratic Spring weather and temps. The plight of the gardener! Students either transplanted seedlings or directly sewed seeds into the ground.

Pam Peak Meade added: Now is the time to ask parents, grandparents, siblings and anyone that would like to work with the TES Garden Club during the summer to come on over!
Anytime you have would be so appreciated, you can go to the garden anytime that fits your schedule, even if we're not there!

For their last Nature Works Club meeting of the term members installed signs they made and painted for the community garden at Toledo Elementary School as their“give back” contributing to community project. They also made home-made ice cream and worked in their nature journals. The signs turned out great and school garden committee members said they loved them! So many emotional residents today; the Activities Director was holding back tears several times. One man who was in a wheelchair in the hallway was sitting sad and angry. Chicky put her head in his lap and he put his head against her forehead, hugged her head with both hands, and tearfully said "Chicky" over and over until I had to reluctantly lead her away to see another person. I don't understand how she does it but she connects with people on another level than we do.

We had paid a deposit on a puppy who wasn’t even born yet; I hoped he’d still get the chance to grow up with Ace.
Lying on the floor with my dog, I decided to write a letter to my future self. As a way to cope with the upcoming loss. I knew that doing so, with Ace at my side, would help my future self get through that pain.
So I wrote myself a letter, then tucked it away.
And I was right. The letter did help me, tremendously. But I was wrong on time.
We got over two more years.
I’m one of the lucky ones. I got two extra years with my best buddy. More trips to the park than I can count. Kisses every day. Road trips. Adventures to the very end.
My dog lived a good, long life, and for that I am so, so lucky.
So while this letter wasn’t intended for anyone but me, I decided to publish it here, unedited. It’s not that my letter will necessarily help other dog owners, but I hope it encourages others to write their own letters. And of course, to enjoy every moment. We all know life is a gift, yet we so easily forget.

A letter to myself, “When My Old Dog Dies.” Jan. 26, 2016

Dear Lindsay,
I know you are literally collapsed on the ground. Lost in that sadness only a dog lover understands.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Remember that no one could’ve given Ace a more fulfilled or loving life. He was a treasure, but so are you.
You did your best, and your best was more than good enough. Ace thrived. He knew he was loved every single day of his loving life.
Remember to allow yourself to feel sad. It’s OK. I hope you remember to allow yourself to wallow in that deep sadness. At least for today. Make sure you take a day off from work and everything.

Remember that Josh might do or say the wrong things. That’s OK. How could anyone know what to do? Remember he is grieving too, in his own way. Remember all the things he did to support you and Ace over the years.
Other people will also say the wrong things. They mean well, and they care.
Allow those cats to curl up with you and offer comfort. They don’t understand but they do provide comfort. Let them.
You probably have your new dog now, which means Ace got to help shape this next dog, which is what you wanted.

Don’t compare the new guy to Ace. He already has a very difficult job ahead of being your new companion. Let him be himself. He might be confused, looking for Ace. Or he might act as if Ace never existed. Either way, don’t hold it against him.
Imagine all the adventures the two of you will have in the coming decade, much of it because of Ace and now he helped you on your way in life.

Imagine all the dogs you can foster because Ace has helped to teach this new pup calmness, acceptance.
There is also that chance you don’t have your puppy yet, that their lives didn’t overlap with you together after all. That’s OK too. You can’t plan everything in life.
You will always honor Ace, such a great dog.
Remember all those hikes, camping adventures, walks and just lounging by the TV. Remember how he’s impacted thousands of lives because, in part, of you.

Hold Ace in your heart forever.
Never forget those soft ears or how he loved with his entire soul and never once thought badly of anyone.
Always tell stories.

Lindsay
