WitP Donors & Supporters - Jill Davis writes:

Esther Borte 2nd Annual Walk in the Park benefit run/walk, cookout and raffle will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017. Since this event can offer great exposure for your business, I wanted to give you an early opportunity for your organization to get involved. Last year’s walk had more than 50 participants and we anticipate this number will increase this year.

Long-time Toledo Resident and past Park Board member Esther Borte created this fundraiser to help support park improvements. Sadly Esther passed away last December. We would like to keep this event going in her honor. With help from Vision:TOLEDO this year’s Walk in the Park proceeds will go toward installation of an RV dump station at Kemp Olson Memorial (City) Park.

Participants will travel the park’s quarter-mile inner track, followed by cookout & raffle. Your support will improve tourist's camping experience and encourage return visits to Toledo.

  • $50 puts your company name on the T-shirt walkers receive as part of their registration. Over 100 participants are anticipated. Great advertising!
  • $25 gift certificate lets you reward ther walker or team of your choice (Oldest Walker, best Costume, Most laps, etc).
  • Gift certificate or product donation lets your business be part of the raffle.

Donations need to be received by September 6, 2017. Thank you for your consideration in supporting this year’s event.

Contact Jill Davis* at Toledo City Hall for your Supporter Registration Form, cityoftoledo@toledotel.com or call (360)864-4564.

*You can register to participate as well, and order your T-shirt early by contacting Jill Davis.

Cyndi Philbrook posted: From Norene... Please post this and mention it to gardeners as you see them. Thanks!

REMINDER: GARDENERS!
The best seed for Toledo will be what has been grown out by area gardeners and selected for local growing conditions.
Please save your heirloom seed and plant starts for the 2018 TOLEDO SEED SWAP. Plan to set aside seed throughout the harvest season.
I suggest packaging most seed in amounts of at least 30 seeds per envelope to give gardeners enough seeds to grow out a seed variety and start saving their own seed. Please label each envelope with the name of the seed (ex., “Bloomsdale Spinach”) and the year it was harvested (ex.,“Harvested in 2017”).
Happy harvesting!

Timberland Bank issues alert on a Caller ID Spoofing Scam:
Recently, we have received questions from Grays Harbor customers regarding phone calls from Timberland Bank occurring after business hours. These phone calls are not from Timberland Bank and are most likely a form of phone fraud known as "Caller ID Spoofing."
It is very easy for scammers to trick Caller ID by using an online "spoofing" service, as seen in the example below. By accessing one of these online services, scammers can make phone calls that appear to be from any phone number they choose, also known as a "spoof number."

Tuesday she added: Who is interested in after school classes for kids 7-11? (Possibly also a 5-7 class) Cost would be per 12 weeks of your choice of classes 3-5 Tuesday-Friday, and would work out to around $5 per hour. Health Corner: What Can You Really Get For $3?

July 11, 2017 Brandless emerged as an online startup dedicated to high-quality health products and food, as reported on mindbodygreen.com. Coupled with locally sourced fruits, veggies and goods available weekly at Toledo’s Thursday Market, and $3 shipping on your first order*,  I may have uncovered my next frugalista store.

Their bio: Based in San Francisco and Minneapolis, Brandless was brought to life on July 11, 2017. We’re a group of thinkers, eaters, doers, and lovers of life with big dreams about changing the world. Our mission is deeply rooted in quality, transparency, and community-driven values. Better stuff, fewer dollars. It's that simple.

According to Brandless: BrandTax™ is the hidden costs you pay for a national brand. Additionally they promise: Our products are made under the highest standards of safety, quality, and social ethics such as certified Global Food Safety (GFSI) or Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). They claim all food is entirely non-GMO, over half is organic, without artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. And they stand against animal testing. They partner with the US hunger relief program Feeding America as part of their Give Back philosophy.

All that, and every item they offer is $3. Seriously. First items: peanut butter, maple syrup, coconut oil & apple cider vinegar. And gummy fish with no artificial anything.

I’m trying it out this week, and I’ll report back to you shortly.

*Use code hello3 at checkout.

If you're interested in presenting a skill share, comment below and we'll put together an itinerary for when/where each skill share will be presented.

5pm: Music, drinks, and hanging out
Open Mic - featured artists and performance times will be announced later.
Bring your own drinks, extra points for having made it yourself.
Hang out, catch up with folks you haven't seen in awhile, meet some new friends!

Tech Report: Security Breaches & What They Mean To You - Part 1

Recently The Chronicle reported WSU admitted a hard drive containing personal information on over 1 million people, some of whom never even attended WSU, went missing when an 83-pound safe was stolen from a commercial self-storage facility. Last week ZDNet revealed Millions of Verizon customer records exposed in security lapse. Friday a Newsy.com video declared 9 of 10 health care organizations may have faced a data breach, adding ransomware, malware or denial of service attacks were linked to most breaches, and may cost the industry billions. Even your friends and family may unwittingly leave the door open by “borrowing” your Netflix & Hulu accounts, as CNET shows in this video.

Despite your own best efforts to safeguard your personal information, it seems those entrusted with that data are unable or unwilling to do the same. And offers to pacify you with a year of free credit monitoring service do precisely nothing except serve to remind you that you’ve been exposed.

Anyone who has dealt with the fallout from such incidents can tell you the estimated loss to individual victims collectively exceeds that of the industry. Increasingly it’s a matter of when, not if, you will be affected by this epidemic. So having a backup plan is disaster preparedness.

Like having an AWOL or weekend getaway bag packed in case of emergency, Virginia McGuire suggests via nerdwallet: Most of us have more than one credit card anyway. If you already have multiple accounts, it’s the easiest thing in the world to designate one credit card exclusively for automated bill payments.

Next Week: Developing contingency plans for your virtual world.

Health Corner: Pet Health* Part 3- First Aid Kit

Commercially available pet First Aid kits are available online & in stores, ranging from around $25 to $170. Much of the inventory of your household First Aid kit can double as pet emergency supplies.

The Humane Society lists pet-approved items for creating your own kit, as does American Veterinary Medicine Association.

Some advice seems contradictory. PETMD says “Dogs should not be given Advil, aspirin, Tylenol, or any other pain reliever made for human consumption.” Fidosavvy.com disagrees: “The recommended dosage for dogs taking human aspirin is between 5mg and 10mg per pound of body weight, given twice a day (once every 12 hours). It's helpful to know that a standard adult size is 320 mg and a baby size is 80mg.”

Here I list some remedies I have used with this disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian nor certified pet health expert. Use advice at your own risk. Some symptoms may indicate a serious problem requiring professional care.**

  • Kaopectate - a toddler’s syringe, like the one that comes with children’s OTC cold remedies, works best. Start with small doses.
  • Pepto Bismol - regular strength. Apply using technique above.
  • Ginger ale - eases upset stomach. Averts the grass-eating and vomiting cycle along with associated clean-up.
  • OTC stye eye remedy - helps sooth and move invisible eye irritations. Active ingredients are mineral oil & petroleum jelly.
  • Food-grade oil - useful for ear irritations and harmless if ingested. Best applied outdoors where head-shaking won’t distribute the excess all over.
  • Coconut oil - actually works on minor skin irritations. Safe if ingested.  Bonus: natural disinfectant.

What remedies have you tried on a 3-day weekend, or when you’re traveling out-of-town with your pet?

*Domestic dogs & cats

Special Report: Credit Correction Resources

A reader writes: Help! I have some outdated debts still showing on my credit record even though I paid them off long ago. How do I get rid of those?

Another asks: What’s the quickest way to raise my credit score? How much does a score count if I’m seeking a loan or mortgage?

In the first case, you can approach credit repair/correction as a DIY, largely free but time-consuming learning process. Using a credit repair agency can be expensive, the trade-off expertise with handling details such as deadlines and specific strategies. Non-profit credit counselors are the middle ground. The Federal Trade Commission has up-to-date resources on credit and money, plus dealing with ID theft.*

The second question is answered by Sean Williams on The Motley Fool in 5 steps, along with a free download link 5 Simple Tips to Skyrocket Your Credit Score over 800. This too takes time.**

Start in both cases at the Washington State Attorney General’s webpage on credit/debt. Begin with the 3-agency credit report you are entitled to receive free each year.
  • Receive a free copy of my credit report.
  • Obtain credit counseling or debt relief services.
  • Learn how to apply for credit and compare offers.
  • Understand my rights dealing with collection agencies.
  • Learn about my rights dealing with a repossession and how to avoid a repo.

Tip: whether paperless or old-school, using a calendar and a chart or spreadsheet will help you track steps with each agency and avoid missing deadlines.

*Fast fix #1: Challenge outdated, paid off or inaccurate items on each credit reporting agency. Just because you paid off a debt doesn’t mean the loan holder or collection agency will automatically report that. By challenging these items, there’s a good chance the loan holder or collection agency will not  answer your challenge, and that derogatory information disappears.

**Fast fix #2: Nick Clements authored How To Boost Your Credit Score By Becoming An Authorized User on Forbes.com for those almost within reach of a certain number for a loan or mortgage.

Toledo School District wrote: My thanks to the many community members who participated in twice-monthly meetings of the Facilities Advisory Committee. The committee members examined the needs of the district, spoke on behalf of the community and worked to craft a recommendation to the board that the committee felt was a responsible way forward. In summary, the recommendation is to modernize the high school including track and restrooms at the stadium; make needed repairs and updates to TES and TMS and to do so with reduced non-construction ("soft" costs). Total recommended bond measure would be $12.9 million. The board will consider this recommendation at their July 13 meeting. Highlights from Saturday’s Cheese Days events:
“It’s the sponsors who make Cheese Days Car & Motorcycle Show bigger and better each year,” says Toledo Lions Club member Jeff Philbrook. “153 trophies plus 4 Category Winners - Best Car, Motorcycle, Paint, & Best In Show - contributed by area businesses & individuals, with over 300 entries.”

Elayne Novotny, quilting instructor from Pe Ell, loaned her inventory of racks to Cheese Days Quilt Show, the event a tribute this year to Toledo’s peerless Esther Borte who lives on in her traditional works. 51 pieces filled the Middle School main hall, a lifetime enshrined in fabric.

Fheila Schneider, owner of a 1936 IH. Restored by her from a hopeless condition to running. Schneider & her husband share a passion to resurrect relics & return them to the road, hand-crafting parts otherwise unavailable.
“There are shinier classics out there,” she says, “but these are daily drivers.” Her motto: Rust to Lust.

Veteran Earl Clark, one of four Cheese Days Car Show original founders, has been helping Cowlitz & Lewis County Veterans with his grass roots raffle. This year, his eighth, a classic 1972 Chevy pickup will go to one lucky $20 ticket holder August 19 at Lowes in Longview, with other prize packages sponsored by a growing list of supporters. “Organizations and groups want to partner with me, but I feel our supporters believe in my principle - that 100% of all proceeds go directly to one worthy vet.” Contact Earl (360)304-1406, or Stan (360)749-6773 for details.

So...Native Soil Farm needs help weeding strawberries <smile>.
Come pick as many strawberries as you want in a row and help us weed the row too! This Sunday July 9th and Monday July 10th. We will also do this the following weekend.

I have some wonderful news to share with those that are interested.

Hernan and his family are my close extended family that live in Peru. Throughout my relationship with them they have guided and enriched my life deeply with true support, real love, and health. They have always held the space for me to live my life and truth, always supporting my interior, knowing I could fulfill my dreams. They never did it for me just held steadfast space and belief that I could!
They have immense knowledge, understanding, and education about the Natural World and Health and want to share this with others. We are offering intensive programs and diets for wholeness and healing that is nature and energetically based.
Focused alignment with Nature provides a harmonic stable environment, infinite wisdom, and wellness. The Natural World is a perfect reflection and teacher to life and creation. Focusing with nature we can collectively empower a conscious "whole" life of love.
I am organizing 7-12 day trips to the Amazon Jungle near Pucallpa Ucayali, Peru. This is for those of you that are seeking and wanting authentic experiences in healing with the cooperation of the amazonian plants. You will be working with Master Shipibo Onanya Hernan Romas Lomas, his wife Rosaura and my family. Hernan comes from a thousand year old lineage and focus of Natural Doctors and Healers.
Hernan and family will be visiting the United States this summer where it is possible for you to meet them initially. Translators will be available and provided.
We support each individuals or groups wellness and wholeness with nature as a reflective stabilizer and teacher. We offer preparation and focus in expanding each person's relationship with themselves and nature.
If you are inspired and initiated to learn more, contact me by messenger or call me.
With Respect and love, Aundrea

Grant me a minute or two in your busy day as I share a little bit about my darling neighbor, surely a candidate for my Everyday Heroes Award.

Zu’s intensive dog behavior rehabilitation a la Cesar Milan took place daily for over a year, long sessions circling the perimeter of Tarnation under Alicia’s watchful eye. Her young children would line the fence to engage with The Girls, little Linda bonding with Zeva The Boxer while we adults discussed local news and weather and politics. That friendly banter was Alicia’s way of keeping an eye on me when The Otter was away at work; she admitted later it was plain to her my health was precarious at best.*

She shared fresh garden produce and homemade tamales with me, I passed bags of plums over the fence. The kids would play in her backyard, always waving when The Girls and I made another circuit of the place, and come over to play in the snowy vast field - always asking permission first. She credits her grandmother Lola Lucille Ross, a member of the LDS Church, with instilling strong family values in Alicia’s life.

Alicia invited me one day to bring my camera to Toledo’s Head Start classroom for a Disaster Preparedness Event. My curiosity drove me to uncover what preschoolers could learn about such a serious topic. (Answer: more than you would imagine.) More invitations to school and sporting events followed, including TES PTO’s Kids Garden project and sports fundraisers, outlined Alicia’s commitment to family values, community volunteerism, and advocacy for strong schools. She now serves on the Toledo Youth Football Board.

To date, I don’t recall her ever asking one thing of me. Indeed, it’s entirely my idea to ask you to join me in supporting Alicia in her time of loss. No matter what age, losing a close family member is devastating, dealing with all the necessary details overwhelming.

So I ask readers to join me in true Toledo Spirit by helping Alicia’s family lay Lola Lucille Ross to rest.

Witnessing local support for the Morgan family last Summer, Logan Grove this Spring, tells me Toledo stands by their neighbors when it counts. Please donate any amount to the modest Lola Lucille Ross GoFundMe account - in memory of your own grandmothers, gone all too soon.

Thank you for your indulgence.

*For new readers, I returned to life April 2016 following years of declining health.

Health Corner: Pet Health* Part 2- Poisonous Plants

ASPCA lists a host of plants poisonous to household pets* along with their 24-hour Animal Poison Control Hotline - 888-426-4435. Care2.com likewise posts 23 Common Plants Poisonous To Pets.

VetStreet.com identifies the Top 10 Houseplants Dangerous/Toxic to Dogs & Cats,

SavvyGardener.com offers 15 pet friendly indoor house plants to enhance your indoor garden, and SmartLivingNetwork.com features Cat-Safe Grass & Herb Gardens For Spoiled, Happy Indoor Felines.

Tip: Adding large-diameter round drain rock, pine cones, or other “mulch” to the top layer of your indoor pots precludes Kitty using it as a litter box. The same principle works outdoors in border gardens or islands of blooming greenery. Bark dust, pea gravel and similar small surface dressings seem to have the opposite effect.

As always, YMMV.**

Special Report: Medical Debt Reporting

CreditCards.com reports new credit bureau rules taking effect July 1, 2017.

According to the article: Collection agencies and debt buyers must not report a medical debt until 180 days after the date of delinquency. This change will protect consumers from having overdue medical bills show up on their credit reports due to insurance delays. Previously reported medical debts must also be removed from credit reports if they are being paid or have been paid in full by insurance. ACA International, a trade association for the collections industry, noted in a report this month that 17 percent of all debt collection complaints consumers filed with the CFPB* in 2016 were related to medical debts.

Further, you can receive a second, updated credit report (in addition to the free annual one) if you successfully dispute an item on your record. And they’re working to improve the (dispute) process in case of ID theft, fraud, and mixed-file cases.
