Wrapping up Day 1 of the shiny new school year on the beautiful gym floor at Toledo High School with a pep assembly.

FCCLA leader Rene’ Ketchum hinted at a Dine-In Dinner, and a long-term community partnership idea in the works. Sorry, I cannot reveal the details yet. But I think you’ll approve.

Kathy Welch posted on TES PTO:  Hoping to just get some info out there: Music & Arts will be in the elementary cafeteria today (Aug. 31) from 3-6pm to rent instruments for band students. This is only one option, but this is the company that comes to us every two weeks. It's not a 3 hour meeting - you can come any time during that time and someone from the store will explain their rental plan. Thanks!

***

TES Principal Angela Norberg Bacon posted on TES PTO: I have a family in need of housing - they have Emergency HUD and can afford $450 a month for rent. They need a two bedroom. They would really like to remain in the Toledo School District. Please let me know if you have something available.

Contact her on Facebook.

Mark your calendars: Mayor Steve Dobosh issued an early alert for an End of Summer Clean Up Day, to meet 8 a.m. at City Park September 16, 2017 with the usual outdoor accoutrements - boots & gloves, rakes, loppers, weedeaters, etc. Open to all ages. Contact him directly, (360)864-4829.

Note: this event will freshen up City Park one week in advance of the 2nd Annual Esther Borte Walk in the Park, making for a safe & pleasant track for walkers of all abilities. Details to follow. Watch this space.

Today - Toledo Thursday Market says: Our market is growing thanks to you!

Open 3 - 7 p.m. across from boat launch through September 2017 featuring homemade, handcrafted, and locally sourced goods, food & produce. Family friendly, kids crafts, occasionally music and performing arts. Something for everyone. Support local crafters, upcyclers, growers and makers in your community.

On that note, Sheila Richardson posts: Please message me if you would like to buy eggs. We have young chickens and too many of them! They are treated well, live in a huge pen and as soon as my garden is done, will return to free range.

***

Health Corner: How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across A Lifetime

TSD Supt. Chris Rust posted this link last week to a TED Talk on A.C.E. and how childhood trauma correlates to specific health issues over a lifetime. Very revealing.
Supt. Rust also recommended to me this book on the answer to childhood trauma. Stay tuned.

*Thanks to Superintendent Rust for the link.

Newly released study: Drinking four cups of coffee daily lowers risk of death. By 64%, I might add.

This expands on a much larger long-term study from 5 years ago that reported significant if lower percentages involving 400,000 AARP members over more than 10 years.

Quick, pour!

Toledo Youth Football fundraiser features Otis Spunkmeyer ready-to-bake frozen pre-formed cookie dough. My neighbor Alex tells me this team needs to raise $8,000 for uniforms and helmets - which seems like a lot, until you realize the critical importance of helmets.

So, although I don’t eat cookies, I believe in helmets. That’s reason enough to bestow famously delicious cookies on my Significant Otter (who DOES eat cookies.*)

Participants will travel along the park's 1/4 mile track earning beads for each completed lap. A bbq and raffle drawing will follow.

Registration forms for participants are at Toledo City Hall. Early Bird registration ends September 6th to guarantee a t-shirt size.

If you have any questions or would like to sponsor or donate to this event please call Jill at Toledo City Hall, (360)864-4564 or cityoftoledo@toledotel.com. Forms may be picked up at City Hall during business hours.

Health Corner: You Are What You Eat

Seldom do I endorse a one-size-fits-all, because, well, that’s simply not true. However, research must have numbers of diverse samples to draw on to extract general results. These may apply to narrow groups or signal broad scale alerts to larger segments of the population.

This piece from mindbodygreen.com speaks to a fundamental health component you can positively influence - your gut.

Comparing dietary similarities across institutionalized food services in both elderly populations and school children provided a sobering picture of cause and effect, along with a proposal for a brighter future.

A snippet:

The problem is that we just don’t know – because nobody has ever looked at childhood obesity, issues of food justice and overall health of our youngsters in the lunchroom and our communities from the perspective of the gut bacteria. So as part of our American Gut Project, we are going to do just that. If we are successful in our Kickstarter project that will launch on or about September 1...

This article shares one woman’s journey from week-long migraines to headache-free outlines 3 main factors, the third addressing food sensitivities.

Local wellness and health educator Kim Brossard offers local programs on a broad spectrum of diet-related topics. She also hosts low-impact exercise classes 3:30 p.m. Tuesday & Thursday at Toledo Senior Center. Stop in and sign up.

Is what you’re eating making you sick?

Looking forward to 53rd Annual Gas Show & Threshing Bee August 25-27

Wednesday afternoon TES PTO Kid’s Closet welcomed more than 30 young patrons for opening day, far more than the three who showed last August, the first year. Says Pam:

“At the end of the school year, I noticed almost a dozen big bags lined up, full of unclaimed lost-and-found items awaiting transfer to Goodwill. So I thought, we can do better than that, and help people in our own community.”
Picture
Last year one shelf unit represented the total space available for this project. This year, a whole room full is barely enough.
Picture
You can donate new and gently-used* clean apparel and shoes for all school ages, including new packaged socks and undergarments. Leave securely bagged items at main door of Toledo Elementary, marked for Kids Closet. Especially needed now:
  • Fall sportswear and shorts, sweats/warm ups
  • cleats, soccer balls, etc.
  • Girls & Boys PE shoes size 2-3
  • Boys hooded sweatshirt size 10-12 (dark blue)
  • Girls pants 3rd-4th grade sizes
  • Boys jeans size 10 (straight cut)

As I was leaving, I shared a smile with the mother of one young lady around 5-6 years old who declared excitedly, “Shoes! I love new shoes!” holding aloft a new pair of pink sports shoes.

Don’t forget Middle & High School students, too.

Kids Closet is open again 3 - 6 p.m today, and next Wednesday/Thursday as well.

Next week: find out what happens to the extra clothing - it helps another project right in your community.

*Gently used = nearly new

We want to have borders of painted rocks...it will take many many painted rocks to complete. We are asking all students their families and friends to start collecting smooth river rocks painting them and bringing to the garden.
WHAT A SPECIAL WAY TO SPEND FUN AND QUALITY TIME with our kids.

Health Corner: Safe Solar Eclipse Viewing - Without Glasses

Know what a pinhole projector is? It’s the old-school method we used in 1979 when the last solar eclipse took place. Safer than taking chances with potentially fake ISO-rated eclipse sunglasses.

Check out this article with instructions  and explanation of how it works on Wired.com. This is the method I’ll be using. Again.

For those fixated on Monday’s solar eclipse, NOAA posts: Eclipse forecast: some clouds for the coast, mostly clear inland.

Though Toledo might seem immune, this clip from The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon offers this dilemma - how to explain hate to our children, following recent events in Charlottesburg, NC.

Each year around the time school begins again, I re-post this story written by an author and blogger I admire. At first read, it’s about how allergies can emerge and fade away at nearly any stage of life. Digging a bit deeper, it’s about bullying - about targeting those who fall outside some narrow definition of mainstream mores and behaviors. Those who are different.

As this school year gets underway, I pray you nurture understanding instead of hate and fear.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. ~Mahatma Gandhi

Mike Stavig says: Just wanted to share some news with you from Toledo First Baptist Church.

On Sunday, August 20, we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary with a special celebration at the Toledo City Park.

50 years ago members from Castle Rock First Baptist Church came up to the park and held a Vacation Bible School. That event started Toledo First Baptist Church.

We will hold a worship service in the park at 10:30 am, followed by a potluck dinner. After dinner we will walk to the boat launch for a baptism.
It will be a great day of celebrating God’s work in the Toledo community.
Anyone who has had a connection with the church is invited to attend.

Tech Report: Passwords, Data Breaches, and Cats

From Toledo’s A Grey Area Computer Repair, a link to this story update from Bill Burr, retired former manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who “wrote the book” on creating strong passwords, and who now calls his original line of reasoning misguided. He adds:

“Of course, for those who use password managers like LastPass, you can generate cryptographically secure passwords on the fly. But it’s still important to have a hard-to-crack master password.”

IdentityForce.com posted 2017’s Data Breaches - The Worst So Far, including America’s JobLink and FAFSA: IRS Data Retrieval Tool, exposing nearly 5 million job seekers and 100,000 families applying for college financial aid.

Apropos of precisely nothing, cheezburger.com has their own take on Jurassic Park, replacing dinosaurs with, of course, cats. Named it Purrassic Park. Besides The Oatmeal’s How To Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting To Kill You, Simon’s Cat, and The Engineer’s Guide To Cat Yodeling, this random noodling is proof of Phil Veal’s claim: “I have a device in my pocket containing the sum of all human knowledge…
I use it to view pictures of cats, and start arguments with strangers…”

Toledo School District Superintendent Chris Rust set the record straight Monday afternoon, regarding an editorial referenced in Monday’s TOT about “alarming new (state) health standards” focused especially on gender issues being forced upon school children as young as Kindergarten age.

The editorial in The News Tribune claimed that, according to the Family Policy Institute of Washington* (State), these standards will be implemented in September, will be taught to young children, and would undermine traditional family values. However, as FPIW* is a coalition of like-minded members, having no authority to set school curriculum.

Rust explained: The health standards including sexual health were reviewed by Toledo School District Board of Directors last March, the Board determining high school students only would be offered this subject, with parents retaining the right to exempt their children from instruction.

Rust proffered a simple analogy: “The State issues a standard - say, that ice cream will be made available to students. The Board of Directors decides what flavors, when it will be available, and directs the District to deliver. Any parent who does not want their child to have ice cream (at school) has the right to offer their child ice cream at home or church, with no interference from the State or District.”

You can substitute “reading material” for “ice cream” if you find it easier.

Further, the Board attended a presentation by a national organization experienced in teaching and promoting education on relevant health issues. Ultimately the Board declared that “respect for all people” is the foundation (of gender matters), that the responsibility begins and remains with parents to decide what and when information is shared with their children.

The Other Toledo indicated the upcoming August Board meeting would address this matter, which was inaccurate. TOT apologizes for any inconvenience or misunderstanding occasioned by this error. Thanks go to Toledo School District for granting TOT the opportunity to correct and clarify the original work.

Press Release:
Toledo School District Proposes $12.9 million bond
TOLEDO  August 4, 2017— Following several weeks of study and analysis by community members, the Toledo School District Board of Directors passed a resolution that will place a $12.9 million bond measure on the ballot in November. The measure is $1.3 million less that the proposal that was narrowly defeated in February. “We’ve been able to accomplish some of the projects since February and we’ve adjusted some of the estimates on the master plan to bring the bond proposal down to this level. The committee even found a mathematical error in the original estimate that reduced the estimate by $250,000”, according to superintendent Chris Rust. “We’ll continue to look for ways to reduce the costs by applying for grants and looking for efficiencies. $12.9 million makes sure that we can keep our promise to do all of the projects on the list.”
The Facilities Advisory Committee, made up of community members, began meeting every two weeks in March following the February election. In addition to community members who had served on the prior committee,  voters who had been vocal in their criticism of prior measures were specifically invited to participate. “It was important to me that we get as many points of view on the issues as possible”, said Rust. A variety of options were proposed and analyzed including consolidation with neighboring districts, consolidating schools, eliminating elementary and middle school projects from the list and reducing cost estimates. The committee ultimately came to consensus on the measure recommended to the board and adopted in the resolution. (Minutes and all documents related to the committee’s work are available by link on the school district website www.toledoschools.us.)
Toledo High School is the primary target for upgrades and repairs. Built in 1975, the high school has had very few upgrades in its 42 year history. New heat pumps were installed in 2014, but the cooling portion of those units await additional funding. Weatherproofing, energy efficiency upgrades, ADA compliance permanent interior walls and remodel of locker rooms are all on the list of projects to be completed.  In addition to these projects, there are plans to add a track and restrooms to the stadium. Former board member, Bill Moore said, ”When we built the stadium 20 years ago with interest funds from the 1995 bond, there weren’t enough resources to do the track, restrooms and concession stand. The hope was to come back and do those later.”
In addition to work at the high school, the bond will pay for improvements at Toledo Elementary and Middle Schools. Levy funds from the 2015-19 M&O levy were insufficient to repair the high school water supply and the middle school roof. The middle school roof is nearing the end of its life and needs to be replaced. The same is true of boilers at the elementary. The roof is estimated to cost $500,000 and the boilers to cost approximately $250,000. In addition, siding and seals need to be repaired and replaced after 20 years. The Facilities Advisory Committee prioritized all of the projects on the bond as “must-do” items. Committee member Ethan Siegel said, “Our students deserve high-quality facilities. They deserve science classes with interactive, experimental laboratories. They deserve heating and cooling. They deserve a safe, comfortable environment to learn in. In short, they deserve better facilities and a better education than the previous generation got.”

Camp Singing Wind relates: We're excited for this star party with Toledo's very own astrophysicist, Ethan Siegel!

Siegel adds: The greatest natural year-after-year show in the night sky, the Perseid meteor shower, is here! While we've got a nearly full Moon to contend with, we should get a spectacular show from sundown until moonrise.

Things to bring to make the experience better:

-blanket(s)
-lawn/lounge chairs
-headlamps/flashlights (red is better, white is ok)
-a pair of binoculars (for looking at planets and other objects in the sky)

When the Moon comes up, the sky will still be awesome, but the best part of the show will come from about 10 PM until the Moon rises just before 11 PM. See you there!

Event begins 8:30 p.m. Saturday August 12.

Today, Logan is with his uncle in Arizona, fishing!!! He is doing better than we could have expected!! His vitals are good and he is happy!! We never thought we would be here only four months later.
Don't believe in miracles?? Take a look at Logan! He is proof that God answers prayers.

Nothing beats a personal recommendation when you’re looking for a professional. 9 of 10 people recommended Glas Guy to me, and now I know why.

More than stock replacement and chip repair, Toledo’s Tim & Wendy Phillips have built their sturdy Chehalis-based business on experience, quality & service, installing custom, cut-to-fit and specialty auto glass (free within a 50-mile radius) for RV’s, heavy equipment* and classic vehicles, and more. They also support local school sports and businesses, admitting you can generally find them at Gateway Pizza at least once weekly.

Despite a busy schedule, both took time to explain details to me (a replacement installation years back in Metropolis was poorly done, leading to rust & corrosion), set things right, and got me out the door in record time.

But it was Michelle, Office Lady Extraordinaire, who drew me in with her unhurried phone manner, sprinkled with “darlin’” and “honey” in a way I can tolerate from very few. She made me feel like she had all the time in the world to take care of my problem. (She didn’t. Have the time, I mean.)

Say Hi to Michelle when you call 1.877.GLAS.GUY and mention TheOtherToledo.com for a discount.

*Laminated glass cut-to-fit for heavy equipment reduces downtime - no lengthy wait for proprietary replacements.

Health Corner: Heat & Poor Air Quality - Lethal Combo

Dominating this week’s record heat combined with the smoky pall hanging over SW WA and NW OR, this post (08.02.2017) from Lewis County Fire Protection District 2 (Toledo):

News Release: Southwest Clean Air Agency- Wednesday, August 2, 2017
Increasing ozone levels in Clark County with continued hot weather, along with intrusions of wildfire smoke and stagnant conditions throughout Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Skamania and Wahkiakum Counties today and into next week have triggered SWCAA to issue an air pollution advisory. This advisory, for wildfire smoke throughout southwest Washington and ground-level ozone (smog) in Vancouver is expected to last through Tuesday, August 8th.

The Oregonian links this National Weather Service video with a meteorologist regarding the phenomenon.

Please check on your neighbors, especially those vulnerable to heat and poor air quality - elderly, chronically ill, and very young.

And consider being the hero you always pictured yourself as a youngster. Download Volunteer Firefighter applications from Toledo Fire Department, and spend your Monday nights training to make a difference in your own community.

Paws & Stay Bark & Breakfast beats the heat with a stock tank cooling station, plenty of shade, and doggy daycare. What about the rest of us?

Superintendent Chris Rust laughed all the way to the front office when asked if any of the school facilities might be pressed into service as cooling stations. “Don’t I wish!” he exclaimed. “A cooling system would help not only the students (during September’s hot days) but serve as a community resource in just this situation. I hope voters will support November’s upcoming Bond Measure, which includes upgrades like (cooling).”

Toledo Senior Center answered the call for relief from soaring temperatures this week: in a matter of hours, volunteers stepped up to host a cooling station for the community, remaining open until 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday this week.

Charlie says: "Luckily we (Toledo Community Library) have AC, so come on in!” Coffee, a good book, the hum of the air conditioning...what’s not to enjoy? Open regular hours: Wednesday until 7 p.m., Thursday & Saturday until 5 p.m.

Sponsor a camper - Andrea says: Is anyone interested / willing to sponsoring a child to attend preschool music camp next week? We have a child who attended a past camp...but is unable to continue... would love for this kiddo to join us as they thrive in our setting, an asset to the class! Please message me if you feel you can contribute at this time.
Thank you! (Cost: $60 per child for the week)

Update: You guys! I love my community - with your combined support (and permission!) we just helped this child plus two more kiddos join camp, where they will have a wonderful week exploring music with peers, the amazing Paola Suculima De La Concha Zindel, and our sweet junior helpers! I am so excited to tell their families tomorrow (Tuesday)! Thank you, sponsors!

Tech Tuesday: My Daily Drivers

Since I first posted this perennial favorite, I’ve been asked for some of my own favorite apps & software. Here I list my Daily Drivers, including some upgrades and new additions.

Ninite Updater, $9.99/year and worth every penny, this feature works behind the scenes to keep software up-to-date without interruption or need to restart. Ninite.com is also a great place to download clean software free of ads and “stuff.”

One of my favorite deep-discount sites is Blinq.com,* and I just discovered they participate in the GiveBackBox program. New stuff arrives, old stuff departs reusing the same box and a free label you print out. Could. Not. Be. Easier.

AlternativeTo.net offers, well, alternatives to big name, often overpriced software. For instance, Adobe is “required” for reading documents ranging from public records to forms, especially on government websites. But I find Foxit Reader to be glitch-free and effective, plus you can use the Typewriter feature to make any form in a tab a fillable form. Oh, so can Adobe - for a price. This means you can skip the printer entirely.

I(heart)Radio is fast becoming my soundtrack of choice, and may replace my long-time staple music source Pandora, which keeps edging ever upward on costs. Completely free, limited to one 30-second ad when switching stations (which I mute), available on my Roku, Windows, Apple and Android.

On the mobile front: OperaVPN is a free Virtual Private Network, great for protection in public WiFi hotspots. OperaMax manages data and background apps while ensuring your privacy. The difference explained here.

What’s in your tech toolbox?

*Other online retailers such as Amazon & Asics also offer the GiveBackBox option.

Support the modest Lola Lucille Ross GoFundMe account - in memory of grandmothers everywhere, gone all too soon. Donations may also be made at Catermole Funeral Home in Winlock.
