From Lewis County Fire Protection District 2 (Toledo) - Diane asks:
Even though we have had some rain, can you please remind people that the burn ban has not changed? I have received calls from people saying that they heard recreational burning was now allowed, after following up I found this to be incorrect. This is the current information on the Lewis County Website under burn permits:

Effective 12:01 a.m. on August 7, 2017 burn restrictions are in place in Lewis County. This Modification and upgrade prohibits all outdoor burning which includes recreational fires.Burn permits are currently not valid. The burning of garbage, paper or other refuse is strictly prohibited at all times. You may obtain additional information at www.lewiscountywa.gov/communitydevelopment or by calling the 24 Hour Automated Information Line at 360-740-1133.

Normally past practice, the ban is lifted around mid October, current information can be read at the Lewis County link attached.

Thank  you.

Andrea Jones wrote: Well, first year experimental garden did pretty well, despite my severe neglect! Still getting summer squash and the winter squash is looking pretty. Kale and chard is still growing. I harvested these tomatoes today - there are lots more green ones out there - do I let them go a bit longer or pick them now and window ripen?? I don't want to lose them all. Gardeners? Permies? I need your advice!

Lewis County Tribune reported last night: The Lewis County 911 center is experiencing difficulties right now and is currently on priority traffic. If you have an emergency, the alternate number for 911 dispatch is 360-740-1105. Lewis County Alert is currently trying to transfer 911 emergency service to Thurston County 911.

Update on Lewis County 911 Outage: Century Link has reported a "major fiber optic line cut" between Olympia and Centralia which is affecting LAND LINE phones (only) ability to call 911. Wireless lines appear to be not affected. Currently, land line 911 calls are being routed through our back-up call center at Thurston County (TCOMM). TCOMM is routing calls back to us via our business lines. ETA for fiber cut repair is estimated at 8 hours.

Tuesday’s vision:Toledo Arts Rec & Events recap:

Pat Caldwell reported: Tracy McFarland and her husband Dan Luce put on two wonderful performances at the library this past weekend. There were songs, stories and puppetry. We had large crowds at the 1 and 3 o'clock performances. Donations up and an increasing number of patrons coming in.

Don Brenner :many "historical items (have been) showing up" in the History Room at the Library. Toledo Historical Society has postcards available for only $1.00 each and "The Toledo Community Story" is on sale for $20.00 per copy.

Jamie Cummings has spoken with the "Iron King", a metal sculptor, who is pricing a design for Steamboat Alley's entry.

Because produce is still being harvested, Toledo Thursday Market will be open again this Thursday, Sept. 28.

Brooke Acosta reports the school will begin this year's gardening science classes next week for K-5th graders. County Extension Service topics will include worms, seeds, and soil testing. The Kid's Garden Club will be making applesauce this week and they are looking for an apple cider press.  Anybody know of one? Also, the TES PTO will run the Harvest Festival at the Grade School before Halloween.

Gary Whiteside shared: We have many projects to work on as we roll into the Fall/Winter months, i.e. holiday decorations for planters, cedar surrounds for dilapidated planters, clearing and planting a hedgerow along the fence in the Kemp Olson Park and a grant funded expansion of the Honor Garden.  For CGT to maintain and grow we are seeking out volunteers, and donations are always welcome. For further information please email Common Ground Toledo at glenngarann@aol.com or visit https://www.facebook.com/CommonGroundToledo/.

Recent Events:
Tom Boone said that attendance for the 53rd annual Threshing Bee and Gas Show topped 8500 visitors, many from out of state.
A small number of volunteers got a lot done at the End Of Summer Clean Up in Kemp Olson Park. Thanks.
18th annual Cowlitz Tribe Pow Wow at Toledo High School was wonderful. Great drumming.
Mike Morgan said over 300 art lovers passed through the Morgan Arts Centre and Pauli Wolfe's studio over the two weekends to see art by nine local artists during the 15th Annual ARTrails Studio Tour.
Joh Jones said 36 people "walked the walk" around the park for the 2nd Annual Esther Borte Walk in the Park.  v:T raised over $1000 for improvements to the City Park.

New Business:
Streetscaping - On Friday Sept. 22, several v:T members met with representatives from SCJ Alliance, a civil engineering and transportation design company, to look at improvements to SR 505 as it passes through Toledo.  Working with the City (pro bono), SCJ will create a general concept rendering. The cosmetic look to the 505 "streetscape" will come from the v:T committee, et al with the City Council's approval. Included are improved street lighting, a safer intersection by the bank, better signage for businesses, sidewalk improvements, bridge lighting, and better views of the river.  If you would like to get involved with this effort, please contact Michelle Whitten at City Hall, (360)864-4564.
Winterfest - v:T is looking for a community volunteer to help co-ordinate holiday lighting and events in Toledo for December. The next Winterfest meeting will be at the Morgan Arts Centre on Saturday Oct. 7 at noon.  Anyone interested is welcome.

Other Business:
School Bond - Supt. Chris Rust said that the Facilities Advisory Committee has completed a second review of the District facilities and has made a recommendation to the School Board to propose a $12.9 million bond in November.  With the passage of the bond, the vision for Toledo will look much brighter.  For more info, call 864-6325 or check website: www.toledoschools.us

Welcome Basket - Sheila Richardson shared she would like to put together a Welcome Package for those who are new to the Toledo Community for the purpose of promoting our local organizations and local businesses. The Welcome Package could contain coupons and giveaways from local businesses and information about all the ways newbies could volunteer in the community. This could be given out when the newbie comes in to sign up for service at ToledoTel and would only be for those new to the area (and not those for example who are moving across town).  We'd likely need a dozen Welcome Packages on hand. ToledoTel gets about 15 or so new installs per month, but not all are newbies. My guess is about 6 Welcome Packages would qualify per month.  I would like to invite anyone interested to work with me on this. Contact Sheila number at ToledoTel is (360)864-2025.

Haunted Barn Party - Dave presented info about this 2nd annual Halloween event held out on Oyler Road on Oct. 28.  Its purpose is to provide a venue for special needs folks so they can partake in events structured to their needs.  All ages are invited and need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.  For more info:  360-978-5277  or  barnparty@outlook.com

Last week: Television’s TheDrs hosted cardiologist Doctor Nieca Goldberg, and Doctor of Pharmacology James DiNicolantonio, to debate opposing views: too much salt versus salt deficit. Link to article with 4-minute video segment here. DiNicolantonio claims sugar is interfering with our body’s ability to utilize salt, further stating that sugar cravings can be connected to a more natural need for simple table salt (though he recommends a pink salt that also delivers iodine in the proper ratio for thyroid function - another health issue linked to restricted sodium intake).

Toledo School District posted this link last Friday afternoon:

From our friends in the Freeman School District:
FREEMAN STRONG

The entire Freeman Family wants to thank the thousands of people and organizations from our community, our state, and beyond for providing us with overwhelming support during our darkest hour. Your support has lifted us up and inspired us as we move along in our healing process. This tragedy has truly brought out the best in everyone—our students, our staff, our parents, and our community—and we are so incredibly proud and grateful.

On Monday morning, our Freeman Family came together to welcome our students back to school. It was a really good day for Freeman. Watching our students walk back into the High School, arms and hands linked, surrounded by staff and family, was truly moving and something we will never forget. In a week filled with emotion and grief, this was such a positive moment for our students, staff, and parents.

Along with all the displays and messages of support from around the region, volunteers and donated food and services, we have over 65 volunteer counselors from surrounding school districts and agencies along with therapy dogs here on campus providing invaluable services to all students, staff, and parents. These resources will be available for as long as needed.

We know the healing process will be long and difficult, but your outpouring of love and support is so helpful and will never be forgotten. Thanks to you, our Freeman Family is Freeman Strong.

Thank you,

Freeman Students

Press Release
The National Society of High School Scholars
September 13, 2017

TOLEDO HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATOR NAMED
CLAES NOBEL EDUCATOR OF DISTINCTION

Jim Echtle, an educator at Toledo High School in Toledo, WA, was recently selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). A role model to pupils, Jim was nominated by a student for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the profession.

Each year student members of NSHSS are invited to nominate the educator who has made the most significant contribution to their academic career for the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award. This honor recognizes exemplary educators whose passion and devotion inspire their students to grow and develop as scholars, leaders and citizens.

The National Society of High School Scholars seeks to advance the goals and aspirations of high-achieving students through unique learning experiences, scholarships, internships, international study and peer networks. From attending the annual Nobel Week festivities in Stockholm, to internships in major corporations and government agencies, pre-college summer study programs, and more than $2,000,000 in exclusive scholarships awarded annually, NSHSS is continually seeking new ways to provide lifetime learning and growth opportunities for academically talented and accomplished student leaders, and the educators who support them.

“Dedicated educators who exhibit a commitment to excellence deserve our highest praise and  appreciation,” said NSHSS President James W. Lewis. “Through our Educators of Distinction program and the grants we provide to support professional development and enrich classroom instruction, we hope to acknowledge and encourage the vital work of the teachers, counselors and administrators who are shaping the intellect and character of our young scholars.”

About the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS)
Formed in 2002 by James W. Lewis and Claes Nobel, senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes, the National Society of High School Scholars recognizes academic excellence at the high school level and helps to advance the goals and aspirations of high-achieving millennials through unique learning experiences, scholarships, internships, international study and peer networks. NSHSS members become lifetime members. At each step along the way - from high school to college to career - NSHSS connects outstanding young scholars with the resources they need to develop their strengths and pursue their passions. Currently there are more than 1,300,000 Society members in 160 countries. To help us further efforts that provide students with continued opportunity, please acknowledge NSHSS in any press release mentions by providing a resource link to www.nshss.org. Health Corner: Salt + Fat

My personal experimentation with addressing sugar cravings - especially those late-night ones signaling I’m beyond tired - led me to an unusual solution: olives. High in healthy* oil, these salty snacks quell my sweet tooth without triggering an intense yearning for more shortly afterward.

So what’s the science behind using salt & fat to knock out these obsessive yearnings?

One: Fat satisfies the body’s hunger. Initially, carbs calm the ravenous appetite; however, the chain of events that follow carb intake sets up that familiar cycle that signals for more. Endurance athletes need carbs. They provide fuel on demand.

Author Jon Krakauer researched the role of fat in nutrition in his 1997 book Into The Wild. WWII concentration camp rations were deliberately lacking in fat (and protein, but that’s a topic for another day), the stuff your brain needs.

Various tales of the Lost Boys of the Sudan found overpopulated refugee camps sending these orphaned youth onward to the next camp with a small sack of beans - and oil, crucial to even the thinnest existence.

Fitness guru Jorge Cruise titled a chapter in his 2002 book 8 Minutes In The Morning: Eat Fat To Get Fit.

Two: Salt deficit is, surprisingly, behind some of today's major chronic diseases, including kidney dysfunction - diabetes. What? Isn’t sugar and refined carbs the culprit behind diabetes?

Last December, this Health Corner post cited Dr Peter Osborne of Glutenology (YouTube) on magnesium, scratching the surface of this specific mineral deficiency, correlating “high blood pressure, depression, osteopenia/osteoporosis, elevated cholesterol levels, and more.”

Dr. James DiNicolantonio refers in his book The Salt Fix to the myriad ways salt deficit is emerging as the link to compromised kidney function, one of many chronic diseases attributable.

And both low levels of salt, and of magnesium, trigger those irresistible sweet tooth episodes. Listen to what that carb craving is trying to tell you.

***Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively. Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived.
And miracles take place against all odds.

*”Healthy” oils are a matter of great debate. Olive is widely considered a healthy oil in nutrition circles. Avocado and coconut oils share that merit as well.

Health Corner: On Supplements & Treatments

MindBodyGreen.com writes on several studies arguing against the pronouncement “Supplements just make expensive urine” commonly quoted by Western medicine. Folate* (Vitamin B9) is commonly recommended for pregnant women, recognized as reducing certain birth defects. Asthma sufferers commonly have low levels of magnesium and Vitamin D.**

Functional Medicine Practitioner Chris Kresser, who overcame chronic illness after spending a fortune worldwide, looks outside the box when tests fail to identify the cause. By addressing emotional causes, he says one patient reported noticeable progress with somatic experiencing and neural plasticity work.

Bernie Siegel’s 1998 classic Love, Medicine & Miracles relates unorthodox methods of treatment such as visualization to help people heal against all odds.

Medicine gardens of South America provide herbal remedies for a host of common ailments, including a few species Western Medicine has yet to uncover. Medicine wheel gardens might be seen as the Native North American equivalent. It’s useful to remember that most of today’s patented remedies are derived from ingredients in nature...that worked. Think aloe for burns, ginger (ale) for upset stomach, willow bark (aspirin) for pain.

Eastern practices are gaining new appreciation globally; this article explains The Science Behind Acupuncture and Why It Really Works.

No one method works for everyone. If you are dealing with health issues that don’t respond to modern medicine, consider something new.
Or ancient.

As always, YMMV***

*Folate is the naturally occurring form; folic acid, the synthetic form, is not well-absorbed as once believed.
**Vitamin D3 is widely considered the preferred form.

BTW, if you have a DSHS Provider 1 ID card (Medicaid) for health care and need help getting to your appointments, you may already know you can apply for Paratransit Services. But did you know that fuel or mileage reimbursement is available for trips to clinics and other health care related travel? This stipend offsets the costs, though it doesn’t cover all. Still, it’s worth your while to find out if you could be getting some of your money back, right?

Tech Report: Experian Hack, Fine Print, More Money Saving Hacks

Word is out now that Experian, one of the Big Three credit reporting agencies, discovered a security compromise large enough to drive a 310-million-person-bus through, and knew about it as early as May 2017.

Experian’s solution? A caveat disguised cunningly as a helping hand in the form of free credit monitoring for a year. Aside from the fact credit monitoring does precisely nothing to help after the fact, and ignoring the lunacy of signing up for anything with the agency responsible for the original breach, Lifehacker cautions panicked victims: (In the fine print) Equifax notes that by signing up for the service, you’re agreeing to not to sue them for the breach… Lifehacker goes on the mention “There’s actually already a class action lawsuit…” Signing up would exclude you from that suit and any potential settlement.

*Update: Lifehacker updated their report to reflect Equifax’s fine print actually includes an arbitration clause regarding the site dedicated to the hack itself; however, you must “send a letter to opt out of giving up your right to sue.” Specific remedial options are listed in this latest article for damage control.

Who would your candidate(s) be?
How do you feel they ought to be recognised?

"reading" books to each other... circle time... learning names... the children choosing familiar songs for all of us to sing together. Today we cut into apples... talk about apples from seed to tree to fruit. We pretended to be apple trees growing then we shook apples down from the tree and ate them... outside we take turns with bikes, balls, making "coffee"... so much learning going on already... we have quiet work time where kids do their own projects and Montessori style "works" while listening to quiet music... It's been a full, challenging, very good week!

A Note: 9/11 Anniversary Monday

Events 16 years ago changed forever the landscape and lives of every man, woman & child in the U.S. What emerged from that event was a resiliency deeply rooted in our very souls, the will to overcome shock and heartbreak and uncertainty about the future.

My arrival in Toledo came shortly after a devastating fire destroyed a significant portion of the downtown business core. Vision:Toledo was created to breath life back into this historic village, and has been doing so ever since early 2011.

In August I revisited Mt St Helens with out-of-town visitors, taking in the film outlining how humble pocket gophers were credited with reintroducing seeds and soil, bringing meadows to life following 1980’s eruption. And I recognised that force within, compelling us to persevere against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Effects of Toledo’s conflagration Christmas Day 2010 had widespread effects on the town, as Mt St Helens’ eruption had far-reaching consequences, and terrorist attacks on US soil 2,950 miles away produced ripples and aftershocks felt across the country.

In all three instances, that indefinable will to rebuild, replant, and reinvigorate shines through the dark hours, a call to action.

Everyone knows precisely what they were doing when Mt St Helens blew, when the news broke about the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and when fire broke out on Christmas.

For some time, the bottom of each daily column has included a plea to recognise Everyday Heroes* in some manner; September 11 seems to me an appropriate date to honor those among us who contribute to their community in so many ways - not as a function of their uniform or title or position, but because it improves the quality of life for everyone.

Searching for events commemorating 9/11 brought dwindling results each year. One sparked my interest:

A Callery pear tree, rescued from the rubble at Ground Zero with snapped roots, broken and burnt branches, was restored to health, replanted in 2010 at the Memorial, and named the Survival Tree.  More…

Each year, the 9/11 Memorial gives seedlings from the Survivor Tree to three communities that have endured tragedy in recent years.

What if Toledo’s Everyday Heroes were recognized each September 11 with a tree planted in their name? Or a tile in Steamboat Alley, similar to inscribed bricks in Toledo’s Wall of Honor?

Perhaps public recognition would be reward enough. Six months ago, I recognized some of Toledo’s volunteers in this column** to great response. What say you to the idea of honoring extraordinary people who make a difference in our community?

Health Corner: Vitamin K

Some years back a family dog was lost to poisoning, specifically rat bait. The local vet was mystified by the symptoms for nearly a week as the poor animal worsened until nearly comatose. We were summoned to retrieve the dog, trying one last-ditch effort to get it to an emergency animal hospital. Tragically, she died only a few minutes before we made it to the facility.

Worse, the emergency veterinarian told us Vitamin K* administered early was the remedy of choice for warfarin toxicity - the key ingredient in many such baits.

In fact, the National Institute of Health in 2013 reversed their 2004 finding to support Vitamin K’s usefulness in reversing warfarin levels in emergency surgical patients, preferred over other methods. And Oregon State University’s Linus Pauling Institute reports: An injection of vitamin K is recommended to protect all newborns from life-threatening bleeding within the skull. (More information). Further on, this report warns: (while) there is no known toxicity associated with high doses (dietary or supplemental) of the phylloquinone (vitamin K1) or menaquinone (vitamin K2) forms of vitamin K (42), the same is not true for synthetic menadione (vitamin K3) and its derivatives.

So when my own trusted health practitioner prescribed me Vitamin K** recently, I naturally researched the benefits.

Noted author, practitioner and teacher of integrative medicine Dr Andrew Weil outlines the benefits of Vitamin K, differentiating between K, K1, K2, and K3 in this brief page.

Dr Susan E. Brown, BetterBones.com wrote: I’m not big on trends, but I’m predicting that vitamin K will be “the new vitamin D” in her 2014 article Vitamin K benefits for heart and bone health. (Check out her Vitamin D article, too, plus the vitamindcouncil for some surprising correlations.)

Megan Ware, RDN, adds in this article last week: Increased blood levels of vitamin K have been linked with improved episodic memory in older adults.

Disclaimer: I have no medical degree nor related credentials, am not qualified to recommend or prescribe any course of treatment for anyone except myself. Consult your own health care provider. As always, YMMV***

Vitamin K describes a group of fat-soluble compounds labeled naphthoquinones that aid in blood clotting. But do not confuse it with potassium, the element that helps nerves and muscle communicate. The short chemical name for potassium is K+. Many foods high in potassium are also high in vitamin K, according to Matilde Ladnier RD, LD.
*Vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, is typically used in injectable form where emergency surgery requires warfarin reversal.
**Vitamin K2, or menaquinone-7 (MK-7), is the most biologically available form for bone health and prevention of bone loss during menopausal transition. Dr Mercola further breaks down K2 into MK-4 & MK-7.

Norene Wedam says:

REMINDER:  GARDENERS!

The best seed for Toledo will be what has been grown out by area gardeners and selected for local growing conditions.

Please save your heirloom seed and plant starts for the 2018 TOLEDO SEED SWAP.  Plan to set aside seed throughout the harvest season.

I suggest packaging most seed in amounts of at least 30 seeds per envelope to give gardeners enough seeds to grow out a seed variety and start saving their own seed.  Please label each envelope with the name of the seed (ex., “Bloomsdale Spinach”) and the year it was harvested (ex.,“Harvested in 2017”).

Happy harvesting!

Toledo School District linked this post: Sgt Pennington from Toledo PD says so probably the most common item we cops take reports on being stolen are bicycles, probably the most common found property we find are bicycles, and not very often can we match the lost/stolen bikes to the found ones, usually because of one reason, most people do not record the unique serial number that is on the bike… More
