Health Corner: On Zen & Youthfulness

This post, shared online by one of Toledo’s enthusiastic permaculture adherents, makes the connection better than my original endeavor:

Some of my Facebook friends may remember me writing about life being like an old Gold Panner. That everyone we meet in life is a sandy shore rich with possibilities of finding gold. Some may only have a few flakes, it's true, but some rather dull looking shores may contain great veins of gold. You will never know unless you invest the time to carefully pan through the sands that cover them...
One of those great veins of gold, for me, was the study of Zen teachings. Shoshin, in particular, grounded me at the age of 12 into freely accepting all the lessons that were to come in my life. I am not sure I would have received them quite the same had it not been for my devotion to this concept. Strengthening this was the practice of meditation, breathing meditation, especially, that got me through many dark times.
"In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s there are few. — Shunryu Suzuki-roshi
Shoshin (初心) is a word from Zen Buddhism which means "beginner's mind". It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would.
The mind is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. Left to its own devices, it gets distracted and cluttered. To discard the clutter, one must surrender their ego and their self-identity. To become less than special, formless. Surrendering of oneself does not mean the loss of autonomy, it means being challenged to grow — growing through humility, learning through service, becoming a student...
The mind to start the day accepting it as a new challenge with many lessons. The keys to success will never be in textbooks, they are passed down to those who are worthy, to those who are teachable. Not everyone will develop the shoshin mindset. For those that attain it, the world will be a wealth of knowledge with more guides than enemies.
“Be master of mind rather than mastered by mind.”
— Zen Proverb
The most fun we have are those formative years of learning. Everything was new, the excitement was in newness, that is the nature of experience. There is a joy in cultivating new skills, being able to do something one could not prior. There is the camaraderie of going through the learning curve together, a bond beyond mere companionship. There is a kinship in going through the grind, the boring parts, and all the magic moments of the beginning. Not just the people who you are experiencing this with, but all of those who have gone before you. Why not continue in this way? Seems a rather dull, unpleasant, and depressing existence if all we deal with is the middle and the end."

Huge thanks to Ben Maestas for his thoughtful and inspired post.

Citizens for Great Toledo Schools continues:

QUESTION DU JOUR 10.23.17
What are soft costs in the Toledo School District Bond proposal?
In a nutshell, soft costs are all of the costs associated with constructions that are not construction themselves. Some examples are: permits, architect and engineering fees, equipment rentals, costs associated with relocating students and staff during construction, and all the tax paid on labor and materials. Also factored into soft costs are allowances for contingencies.
In general, soft costs range from 32%-51% of the total cost of a project depending upon a variety of variables. The average for projects in Washington in districts served by CSG was 42%. The FAC determined that 38% was an appropriate estimate as part of getting the bond below $13 million.
Keep in mind that when the proposed projects are complete, if there are any excess funds remaining, it will be used reduce the amount borrowed and no additional projects beyond those identified will be undertaken without coming back to the community for permission and funding.

Two weeks remain before V-Day (Voting Day) November 7. Mail your ballot back early, or drop it off at the ballot box located adjacent to Toledo Senior Center & Toledo Head Start facility.

My own experiment with swapping an aging Windows laptop for a Chromebook has passed the 30-day mark, with only one disappointment - I cannot run my preferred PDF Reader Foxit on Chrome OS. But that may change, if C/NET’s answer to my dilemma actually works: Yes, you can run Windows programs on a Chromebook.

Meanwhile, I can now play Wordfeud on the Chromebook’s larger screen, saving eyestrain & a kink in my neck, thanks to Chromebook OS welcoming Android Play Store apps aboard. How-to covered on this Google Help page.

Health Corner: Spring vs Fall Outdoor Allergies

One reader asked “Why don’t you share something about the seasonality of different allergies? Not everyone gets over (allergies) once Spring is past.”

The Allergy Tracker link on Toledo Fire Department’s website tells me tree, grass, and ragweed pollen count is Low - no surprise there, as it’s October now - and breathing is Good.

So why am I still relying on allergy remedies?

Autumn outdoor allergens don’t get the press Springtime triggers do, yet sensitivity to ragweed and other weeds, and mold in soils, compost, and fallen leaves can extend your allergy “season.”

According to WebMD: Even if it doesn’t grow where you live, ragweed pollen can travel hundreds of miles on the wind. For some people who are allergic to ragweed, certain fruits and vegetables including bananas, melon & zucchini can also cause symptoms.

Everyday Health adds: “In temperate climates, mold spores form a distinct Fall season in mid to late Fall after ragweed season is over. Mold spores are common airborne allergens...light, very small, easily inhaled into the lungs...Spores rise high into the atmosphere as the day warms, falling back to Earth as evening cools…"

What about indoor allergens?

Douglas H. Jones, MD, of the Rocky Mountain Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Group, identifies those as “dogs, cats, cockroach droppings,* dust mites* and mold.”

Estimates run between 5 and 20% of people have a winter allergy. Recommendations for minimizing exposure:
  • Use a humidifier to reduce indoor dryness; however, dust mites thrive in 60%+ humidity, temps 60-85F. High humidity encourages mold growth also. Aim for 50% maximum humidity.
  • Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting, an ideal environment for dust mites. Use area rugs.
  • Clean, dust & vacuum using high-efficiency HEPA filtration.
  • Wash sheets weekly in HOT water (130F) to kill dust mites; invest in hypoallergenic pillow cases & mattress covers.
  • Minimize dander; bathe pets weekly (not more), keep animals out of bedrooms of people with allergies.

TOT’s Health Corner from 02.02.2017 outlined the steps one sufferer took in his post: I Went From 5 Sinus Infections In One Year To None: Here’s Exactly What I Did. Most of the steps undertaken by the author are basic, commonplace recommendations - rest, fluids, steam, fruit and veggies, dusting & vacuuming, clean linens.

Remember, YMMV.**

***Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively. Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived. And miracles take place against all odds.

*Cockroach & dust mite droppings are actually the allergy triggers; remember the hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a "rare respiratory illness associated with the inhalation of aerosolized rodent excreta (urine and feces) contaminated by hantavirus particles..." as noted by the Canada Communicable Disease Report June 2015.

**YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary

We recently added a new acquisition - a large 40" x 96" wooden panel with a decoupaged pen and ink drawing depicting a logging scene. It was donated to the Society by City Hall. It is hanging on the wall outside the History Room.

We also received a box of photos that a woman found in a house she bought in Winlock.
They are family photos taken in Seattle and Everett over 75+ years and sent to a relative.
I am trying to find out if there is a connection to Toledo.

Dale Dyer donated a photo of Lincoln School with classes from 1912 to be copied for the Society. That has been done and another copy was dropped off at the library.

Tech Report: On Technology Versus Old School

One of my original organizational newsletter favorites was - is - Unclutterer.com, a great resource for managing your stuff (and your life). As I read the comments following their recent post Backups Aren’t Just For Computers, I noted the first contributor outlined his own Plan B for various aspects of his world. The next opinions (hilariously) outlined the ways technology is overrated.

Here I seek to establish both views have merit - and reveal my own move to embrace technology:

Thanks to #SkiptheBS for pointing out a backup plan doesn't require a rant about technology (and BTW, I'm not reading this in traditional print).

Two instances of ID theft cost me my biz, my home and my health over a dozen years ago. Both involved paper - and cut locks. So I went paperless in 2005, thanks to technology.*
Today most ID theft occurs due to some megalithic agency getting hacked - you have no control over it, and it matters not one bit if you never touched a keyboard. Your info is out there, as is your parents’ and grandparents’ and brand new babes.

The article above focussed on two basic concerns: backups of important paper documents, and backups for critical technology.

In my own case, I have the first topic neatly covered in my blog post here.

As for the second topic, #SkiptheBS addressed alternate plans very neatly - batteries, spares, extras. Add boots, bottled water & pantry staples, and you’re ready to ride out most storms.

The Bee Cause Project has been serving the community since 2013 connecting youth and adults across the United States (and beyond) with the secret life of bees through the installation of observation hives inside of schools as well as traditional hives in their gardens.

The mission of The Bee Cause Project is to ensure future generations are stewards of the natural environment who understand, engage, and are inspired by the wonder of honey bees while being empowered to take action through careers in STEM.

The objectives are to utilize bee learning centers to: reconnect youth and adults with the natural world, provide an engaging and unique tool for teaching STEM to students, empower students to act as bee ambassadors, and instill in youth the value of hard work, collective impact, and the importance every individual has in their community.

To date, the Bee Cause has provided hives for 220 schools in 46 states and 4 countries that are a part of the Bee Cause community.

It's a great time to be sure you and your vehicle are ready for winter weather and to start checking our mountain pass page before heading out! http://www.wsdot.com/winter/

Forecast is for 32 degrees overnight Friday in Toledo. If you haven’t already, winterize now. Don’t forget Fido & Fluffy - they need fresh water and shelter. We have one of those small Igloo doghouses for Princess (the mouser), placed out of the wind & rain, insulated with one of those fleece-lined Cat Cozy things - and, I admit it - a heating pad.

QUESTION DU JOUR
Happy Wednesday! Today's question is a two-part question and answer. Why are the bond projects so expensive? And, why can’t we get community volunteers to do some of this work and save some money?

Yesterday Toledo Senior Center brought $25 flu shots to town, saving a trip to the doctor’s office or a waiting line.

A Silent Auction also kicked off yesterday…
...wrapping up Friday October 20 when The Mighty Fine Seniors serve their locally-famous Beef Stew Dinner to all ages 4 p.m. until gone (and it goes!).

Your continued support of this vital community resource benefits all of us, not only those North of 65 years old.

Do you recall those 100 degree days last summer? Toledo’s Senior Center was first to organize and offer their place as a Cooling Station - in 2 hours flat.

Last year’s Town Hall meeting following the November election packed the house on a weekday - one week after Lewis County Commissioners announced de-funding and withdrawal of long-time county support. As the transition to non-profit entity advances, your patronage of our Senior Center assures their future success.

Here’s to all of you who help keep the doors open.

Tis the season…

My neighbor reported someone recently dumped off half a dozen felines in front of their place, ranging from a few weeks old to adult. Cat’s Meow SNAP! has provided solutions to overpopulation since 2011 with access to free (feral) and low-cost spay & neuter, plus other free/low cost services like vaccinations, deworming, and flea treatment.

Next week’s two reservation dates are filling fast (direct link to real-time updates here), with 15 spots remaining for males only, 8 spots standby for females on Tuesday October 17, and 10 spots standby males / 9 spots standby females on Saturday October 21 at time of press.

Wouldn’t it be fabulous if area shelters no longer had an overabundance of kitties and euthanasia became a thing of the past? Together we can make that happen!

Amazon Smile and  iGive.com donate each time you shop online, at no extra cost to you. Or donate via PayPal one time or monthly. One more option:

IN LOVING MEMORY AND IN HONOR OF MR T'S AMAZING SOUL, WE HAVE CHANGED HIS FUNDRAISER TO BE A FUND FOR SPAY/NEUTER & EMERGENCY CARE OF FREE-ROAMING/UN-OWNED CATS....the lost, forgotten and cast away https://www.youcaring.com/inmemoryofmrt

By the way, simply sharing on Facebook via the YouCaring link above can generate up to $37 toward this fund with no out-of-pocket expenses.

Thanks to Twila Collins, Toledo native, for providing a more sensible answer to overpopulation than mass euthanization. Cat’s Meow SNAP! is also on Facebook.

Health Corner: Caffeine & Coffee

Long touted as the Pacific NorthWest's brew of choice, coffee has been blamed for a host of ailments. So let’s kick this week’s post off with an article from MindBodyGreen titled 6 Myths About Caffeine.  One source cites the high levels of antioxidants and other compounds in coffee "have been related to better insulin sensitivity, liver function, and reduced chronic inflammation." Further, when used correctly, caffeine can be a useful supplement, helping to improve memory and fitness and even reducing heart disease and stroke risks.

HealthLine cites Seven Reasons Coffee Is Good For You, including fat-burning qualities and reduced risk

LiveStrong cites Harvard Medical School’s Dr Scott T Weis’ 1993 study of 20,000 asthma patients, finding regular coffee imbibers suffered 33% fewer asthma symptoms than non-coffee drinkers.

Time.com posted Is Coffee Good For You? Is Coffee Bad For You? The article outlines the origins of the “bad for you” argument, and outlines a few exceptions. Expectant mothers need to realize their unborn child is very sensitive to caffeine.

AARP reported the good, the bad, and the ugly about caffeine and coffee in this 2013 article titled Coffee For Health - Too Good To Be True? including stomach upset due to acid,* and caffeine interference with certain medications such as Cipro (antibiotic), thyroid medication, drugs for depression, and Tagament (heartburn).

Four short years later, AARP posts Can Drinking Coffee Slow Aging? David Furman, lead author in a Stanford University School of Medicine study, noted that the more caffeine older people took in, the more protected they were against chronic inflammation.

As always, YMMV.**

*Cold-brew coffee to the rescue, with up to 60% reduction in acid.

**YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary

***Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively. Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived.

Bonanza BBQ proprietors Christina & Daniel Gorton granted me a brief drive-by interview Tuesday, inviting me in to take a look around their beautifully updated location at 102 Kellogg Way in downtown Toledo.
Said the Gortons: “We outgrew our Chehalis location due to popularity, and chose this place as ideal for our needs.”

The kitchen is spotless and uncluttered, new appliances and stainless steel work stations throughout, shiny floor and optimum lighting. New restroom adjacent to the kitchen is ADA-compliant, flooring in main hall easy-on-the-feet rubberized faux plank, door thresholds accessible to walkers and wheelchairs. A wine-centric cabinet offers stemware and more for your catered gathering, and the polished bar is topped with 2 long cedar planks, as is the smaller dessert side table (not pictured). Western-themed decor is deliberately spare, maintaining the open and airy feel of the hall.

Facilities will be available for large gatherings, anniversary celebrations, meetings and seminars, and bookings are already coming in.

“We were (negotiating for) a site in Toledo, and Paula Burrows, our realtor, kept contacting us about this one. We agree it’ll be ideal for our operation.” Mobile catering and on-site events will replace their original restaurant-style operation. Said Christina: Knowing how many people to serve is better than cooking for a crowd that doesn’t materialize, or planning for a dozen diners and 200 show up expecting service. It’s just smarter for everyone.”

Final paperwork is expected to be completed around the first week of November. Christina added: “Whether it’s a party of ten or a full house, give us a call.”

To answer your next question: they have a 5-star rating with 70 reviews on Facebook. Don your best bib & tucker.

Why is this bond less than the last one? If this one is voted down, won’t the next one just be less?

Time is not on our side. Construction cost inflation of 4% per year will add much more to the cost of the projects than the district can save with grants and existing funds. It is essential to pass this bond. More...

Common Ground Toledo met last week to take stock and ready up Toledo’s Fall planting, and prepare for upcoming expansions and new greenscaping plans. Timberland Bank awarded a $500 grant toward the Honor Garden addition adjacent to Toledo’s Wall of Honor, and Steamboat Alley received some fresh greenery. Fall colors will adorn the downtown planters shortly, and Kemp Olson Park boundary line project will get underway.

Well-designed greenscapes and gardens give visitors and residents those vital signs of life in a thriving community. They do require maintenance, the behind-the-scenes efforts of dedicated volunteers. Your contribution of an hour or two, weekly or more, keeps Toledo beautiful. Be part of a growing concern and display your hometown pride.

Mission Statement:
To create and maintain a greener and more colorful presence in Toledo by caring for the design, beautification, and maintenance of the planters boxes, gardens, and common areas throughout town.

Lewis County Community Development

PRESS RELEASE

Date: October 4, 2017
Contact: Lee Napier, Director
Phone: 360.740.1146
Release # 3

Lewis County Burn Restrictions Modified – To Allow Recreational Fires

Effective 12:01 a.m., October 6, 2017, Lewis County Board of County Commissioners and Lewis County Fire Marshal will modify the current ban on recreational fires for all of unincorporated Lewis County, Washington.

Effective 12:01 a.m., October 16, 2017 Modify the current ban on open burning for all of unincorporated Lewis County, Washington. For further information visit https://burnpermit.lewiscountywa.gov/

After careful review of the current and extended weather forecast, the Lewis County Community Development Director and the Fire Marshal, in conjunction with the Lewis County Fire Chiefs Association, have determined that weather conditions within Lewis County have improved and will modify the burn restriction to allow recreational campfires in designated campgrounds and on private lands if built in the following manner:

And: Congratulations to Mr. Ryan, Adna's Teacher of the Month for October!!! #ThankAmericasTeachers

You can thank a teacher, vote for a teacher, and educators can submit proposals for educational programs to win grants.

Send a thank you to an exceptional teacher who’s shaped who you are today, or made a difference in your kid’s life. When you do, we’ll give America’s teachers the chance to fund their educational visions. Link here.

Your votes have the power to help us give away over $1 million dollars in educational grants throughout the year. Farmers awards 180 teachers with $2,500 grants and five $100,000 grants annually. Link here.

Farmers invites teachers to submit your proposals for educational programs that better prepare students for the future. Teachers could win a grant of up to $100,000! Link here.

So how come no Toledo educators are posted here? Have you thanked a teacher, or cast your vote for Teacher of the Month? Hmm?

Citizens For Great Toledo Schools convened last night at the library to generate support for the school bond measure on the ballot in November. One reader reported “We had a really good turnout!”

Toledo School District will host a Bond Forum October 18 at the high school library. This will be a community information meeting regarding the November capital bond proposition. Representatives from the FAC, Construction Services Group, Piper Jaffray and OSPI have been invited and are expected. There will be plenty of opportunity for participants to ask questions. Everyone is invited to attend.

One TES PTO supporter shared a link: Have you downloaded the box top app? You can get bonus points and help our school. It's really easy.

Another reader added: I submitted $524.00 to box tops from last year. Your box tops pay for so many things for our kids!

Reminder: Many box tops are expiring 11/1/17, please get them in asap so we can get them mailed off and collect $$$ for our school. You can send them with your child to school, a neighbor child or just drop them off at the elementary school. Your help is appreciated. The money we raise helps pay for the Pacific Science Center, Field Trips, Garden Club, Reading Night, Jog a thon, the Clothes Closet, Teacher Appreciation and more. Questions? Please ask me (Tina Lyon).

Interested? Private message for more details.

Says one parent: This is an amazing program! Both of my children are apart of the Science/Crafters club and they are genuinely excited about learning new things every week. It's a wonderful opportunity to instill a love of learning in your child while at the same time cultivating a creative imagination! I highly recommend this program for your young person .

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife issued this update (10.02.2017):
Starting today, you must release any Chinook salmon you catch on the Cowlitz, Green and North Fork Toutle rivers, due to low returns of hatchery Chinook.
Picture

The closures are necessary to ensure that enough fall chinook return to those rivers to support hatchery production during the coming year. All three rivers remain open to retention of other fish species, as listed in the current fishing rules. See more details on this low run and rule change at http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/sep2917a/.

However:
The first razor clam dig of the fall season will get underway Oct. 6-7 at four ocean beaches, now that marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat. Razor clam digging is approved on the following beaches, dates and evening low tides (no digging before noon):
• Oct. 6, Friday, 7:49 p.m.; -0.4 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
• Oct. 7, Saturday, 8:33 p.m.; -0.7 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
More details at http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/oct0317d/

And this notice:
Martha Lake in Lynnwood is one of the more than 100 lakes stocked with tagged trout for our 2017 statewide fishing derby. http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/washington/40/.
Anglers who catch a tagged fish can claim a prize - ranging from fishing gear to gift cards - offered by license dealers around the state.
