Toledo Lions Club posted: Help us celebrate the new year with a bang and support the Toledo community by getting your fireworks from us.
We are open this week through New Year's Eve at Toledo Market Fresh and Sunbirds in Chehalis.
Picture
New Lions Club logo to be posted along major travel routes soon.

From the website: The Toledo Lions Club sells firewood and fireworks to help fund college scholarships, school supplies for students and food for special school events. Last November, we gave away 75 frozen turkeys at our annual Turkey Bingo and at Christmas we distributed more than 20 food baskets to area families in need…

Toledo Lions also established the Veterans Wall of Honor to recognize and honor service members current, retired, and passed on. Download form here to order your personalized brick to install on the memorial.

Tom Boone shared Restore The Cowlitz's video: Project Cowlitz is a documentary we are making about the decline of the hatchery program on the Cowlitz river. We are working with a few conservation groups and State Sen. Pearson on the negative impact eliminating a healthy hatchery program has on the local economy.
Like the page to stay up to date on the movement and be sure to sign the petition to the state that you want hatchery steelhead in the Cowlitz river.

Educator Andrea Jones, known locally for her popular MAPS after-school focus programs, posted this review yesterday on a TED podcast :
This is SO good. So many great ideas for rethinking education, including attracting excellent teachers, using storytelling and hands-on problem solving vs. feeding information to teach science, engineering and other subjects. The 3rd talk about flipping the classroom mindset (by the founder of Kahn academy) and having global non-grade-level lessons/classes on demand (more accessible, child directed, individualized) is especially interesting.

Author/Speaker/Teacher Ben Maestas of Permaculture Homestead shared this post last May on “lasagna gardening” to create productive, nearly weed-free crops:
This particular style of bedding reduces the opportunity for invasive plants to take over the garden, almost completely! All the while holding in moisture for weeks, which is important even in Washington, where it rains all year EXCEPT during the growing season…

The Permaculture Student offers the video series Grow An Incredible & Easy Garden With Permaculture - free.

Don’t forget - Toledo Library has a seed “library” to swap your local all-natural homegrown plant and veggie seeds with your neighbors. BYO envelope or container, take what you need and share the rest.

Health Corner: For Pets - Surviving New Years Eve Fireworks & Noise

Our hound blend Zu dropped to her belly once while leashed to the John Deere Plott Walker* when a thunderclap sounded overhead, so I followed advice to recover quickly, carry on normally with the exercise while offering encouragement in a calm voice.

Brought home as a 2 year old, Zu reacted strongly to any staccato report with hysterical baying and lunging uncontrollably, from the metal gate latch to bubble wrap to firewood popping, nearby gunfire triggering the worst response outside of thunder.

And fireworks.

That Mutt blogger, foster dog caregiver & professional dog runner Lindsay Stordahl addresses sensitive & reactive dog responses, stating: A dog that is extremely anxious around fireworks can learn there is no reason to be afraid. It just takes a lot of creativity, time and patience. The more fearful your dog is, the more important it is for you to be a calm, relaxed leader.

Three primary methods:
  • Benadryl, or a prescribed sedative from your vet, or Bach Rescue Remedy herbal.
  • Thundershirt, a compression vest for anxiety, or tight-fitting T shirt
  • Behavior modification, requiring time, patience and persistence

Tonya Wilhelm, a professional dog trainer, recommends for extreme thunder or fireworks anxiety:

  • Through A Dog’s Ear: Music To Calm Your Canine Companion
  • Thundershirt
  • Earmuffs for dogs
  • Storm Stress, a natural calming product
  • A white noise machine or a box fan
  • Comfort Zone, dog appeasing pheromones

If family & friends will be over, take precautions in case your pet bolts out the door:
  • Provide plenty of exercise before dusk (fireworks)
  • Assure collar & current ID tags are in place. Reflective collars recommended.
  • Microchip your pet.

What methods have worked for you?

*Zu is a Plott-Walker, a hound blend sweet and stubborn by turns, possessing an unquenchable need to run herself (and anyone foolish enough to grab the other end of the leash) to exhaustion.
A once fine John Deere lawn mower, hacked into a motorized “sled” of sorts for exercising Zu, was dubbed the John Deere Plott-Walker.

Toledo’s Master Gardener Linda Bird-Sonne writes: Thank you for posting the Lewis County Master Gardener, Master Recycler's Christmas Tree, Styrofoam, and Lights Recycling Event in your wonderful 'The Other Toledo'. What a great idea.

I just got back from staffing day one of this event at the Transfer Station in Centralia today (Monday). For the day after Christmas, we were surprisingly busy! This Event will be going on until January 10th so feel free to post it a second or even third time, only if you want.

F.Y.I., these trees are ground up by this Solid Waste Facility and composted with other bio stuff. The completed compost becomes available for free at a spot near the boat ramp at Borst Park in Centralia. If you were ever curious where these 100's of trees go that are kept out of the landfill, they're returned to nature in the form of free compost!

In today’s column:

  • Toledo Community Library Posts Winners - Letters To Santa
  • Pacific NW Book Review: Treknology
  • Holiday Closures

If the Holidays are about home and hearth, this post says it best…

I mean, WOW!!!
I can't believe we're here. It has felt like that perfect dream that you don't want to wake up from. I have been afraid that looking away, even just long enough to write about it, might make it disappear.
BUT IT WON'T.
The truth is, we ARE here! The dream is only just beginning!
Just moving to Washington was such a blessing for the Family and me. Seeing my beloved Mount St. Helen always on the horizon has warmed a space in my heart I did not realized had missed it so much. While other mountain ranges have always taken my breath and brought such joy to me, Mt St Helen and I have had a special connection and shared a very similar history. I was here for her eruption and like her my life also erupted, we both took a beating that nearly ripped us apart, we both learned of loss in the most horrid of ways and we both are working towards healing and some days clouds hide us away and some days we shine brightly on the horizon. Beyond the blessing of having such an endearing friend as a neighbor again, we have moved to a place that has brought comfort to my heart since my first visitations here, back then I never imagined living here or daydreamed of it but I did soak in every healing moment I would spend here.
Now, living in Toledo, I mean it's hard to even talk about it without sounding like I am doing a commercial or trying to sell the place... but it's just that perfect, to me. The off-ramp from I-5 puts you looking over the valleys at the expanse of the Cascade mountains and in full, glorious view of Mt St Helen and Mt Rainier! The outskirts of Toledo greets you with a water tower that has been recently painted with a mural showcasing a small bit of the history of the area. A history that gave rest to the weary traveller and strengthened them for the journey ahead.
Toledo is a small town set along the edge of the Cowlitz river and the road through it works its way down from the valley above to the river valley below and is nestled among the trees in such a way that makes the whole town soft on the eye. Yet this, blink and you'll miss it, seemingly, town has a great grocery store, eating establishments worth driving from other towns to eat at, an exciting art community, great parks that have something for everyone, THE COWLITZ RIVER and all the exploring, fishing, boating and other possibilities it offers, It even has one of the best wineries, Bateaux Cellars!!!
As I cross the river leaving the main town and heading towards Native Soil Farm, home, I peek over the bridge at the rushing waters below... the journey those collection of water droplets have had just to get to this point is beyond imagining, sure we could describe most of the story; sea, clouds, rain, mountain snow, river, water under the bridge, but there it is right there, reminding me, let go of the past, take in the moment and look forward to the next few bends between me and the Cowlitz River Valley farm that will hold our roots; that long journey to get to this point is water under the bridge. I know now, more than ever, that some of the best days of my life are still ahead and I look forward to reciting that truth every time I cross the bridge for as long as I am able.
"The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure." ~Richard Bach "Illusions"
Aloha, always

Toledo School District wrote Tuesday on Facebook: It has been important to us to hear from our community on this page. We've learned a lot from this interchange. We've been working with our attorney to allow comments from the community and moderation of those comments within specific parameters. The balance of decorum and free speech is a delicate one.

In order to "reset the forum", all public comments posted to this page since its inception will be removed in the next few days and a new set of parameters will be established. After that time, comments will again be visible to all and I'll be able to respond to questions, provide information and to remove content that is off-topic, libelous or otherwise inconsistent with the mission of the school district. We look forward to an improved forum for our community.

Toledo’s hometown astrophysicist and author Ethan Siegel posted this paragraph on undernourished dreams:

"America is home to some of the greatest scientists, engineers, astronauts, administrators, and organizations in the entire world. With the people and facilities we have today, we could put a human on the Moon or even on Mars within the next 10 years, if only we invest in it. But grandstanding, lofty promises, and a dearth of funding will yield the same results they always have: a nation whose greatest dreams go unfulfilled. What we can accomplish as a species is limited only by what's physically possible and what we invest in it. Our ambitions to venture beyond low-Earth orbit are achievable, but only if we make it so. Unless there's a plan to increase NASA's funding to sufficient levels to send humans to worlds beyond our own, America is never going to get there."
Last week, President Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1, declaring America's ambitions to return to the Moon with a crewed mission. This is in line with the vision laid out by the Trump administration earlier this year, but with no additional funding provided for the endeavor, it's all but a certainty that this won't happen. When we went to the Moon the first time, we were investing approximately 5% of federal expenditures in NASA; today, that figure has declined to just 0.4%, the lowest figure since 1959. We have the people, the technology, the facilities, and the will to take humanity not only to the Moon, but to Mars or even beyond. All it will take is full federal funding and an ambitious timetable. This vision offers neither, ensuring that it will never happen under the current plan.
Sorry, America, we're not going back to the Moon. And even if we chose to, the Moon shouldn't be our goal, anyway.

Not strictly Toledo News: I met The Chip Guy last Wednesday after The Chronicle ran his story. Facing zoning challenges discourages him not one bit, as he seeks to carry out his purpose - part gleaner, part activist, part environmentalist, completely down-to-earth in “sharing God’s bounty & love.”

There’s more than chips - this afternoon I enjoyed rescued orange, yellow & green peppers plus grape tomatoes in my one-skillet rice dish.

The Chip Guy posted Tuesday: Good morning everyone. I would like to inform you all that the food warehouse will NOT be open tomorrow, Wednesday (December) 20th.

Last Friday Toledo School District shared: Our thanks to the thoughtful folks from the Onalaska SD transportation department. One of their drivers saw three Toledo students walking in the dark on Tucker Rd. this morning. The three had missed their bus and were walking to school. Seeing this as an unsafe situation, the Onalaska driver stopped and picked up the students. She transported them to school and notified our team so that parents could be contacted. Thank you Onalaska for being part of keeping our kids safe.

Toledo High School FCCLA students presented Toledo Senior’s a check, proceeds from the club’s Dine In Dinner with live music December 4th at Toledo High School.

Emma Cline & Corianne King, with leader Ms Ketchum, made the presentation at lunchtime Wednesday in a brief statement before a blessing was pronounced over the meal. The three were applauded for their work, along with another student helping with the weekly Wednesday lunch crowd.

The club’s fundraiser followed by only a few weeks two other member’s appearance at the Lewis County Budget meeting, where they pleaded before the Board of County Commissioners to maintain support financially for the County’s five senior centers, now united as one consortium, especially for Toledo’s senior center as a vital part of the community.

Astrophysicist and local author Ethan Siegel reports: “This year, at the peak of the Geminids, the Moon will be a waning crescent, not even rising until well after midnight. Even when it does, it will be thin enough and far enough away from the origin of the Geminids that you’ll still have a spectacular show. If you have dark, cloudless skies, you should be able to see up to two or three meteors per minute once the sky reaches full darkness this year. While the cold snaps affecting much of the country might make it a little unpleasant to be outside for too long, it also provides the best viewing conditions for the night sky. This year, you won’t want to pass up the opportunity.” More...

The Geminids will be at their peak on the night of December 13/morning of December 14.

Well over 2000 lbs of produce grown in the garden this year. Many pumpkins and winter squash were used to decorate for harvest festival and all went home with families.
Garden is buttoned up for winter, garlic, shallots & fava beans planted, leaves spread on raised beds, cover crop planted in tilled spaces.
Winter projects: build pathways with donated pavers, wood shop class agreed to build six benches for seating
There are still tons of greens in the fall/winter garden beds including kale, collards, chard, bok choy, cilantro, parsley, lettuce and herbs. All wonderful for hearty winter meals and easily hidden in soup.

Health Corner: New Blood Pressure Guidelines - Hype vs Hope

Recent guidelines lowering acceptable blood pressure numbers triggered a spate of articles explaining how maintaining a low systolic figure factors in heart disease & stroke rates.

A recent New York Times article Q&A addressed why the new “normal” puts around half of all Americans in the higher risk category, how to calculate your own numbers, and what forces impact your BP:

For most people, a typical low-salt diet does not alter blood pressure very much. Reducing sodium might help if you can manage extremely low levels.*

Functional Medicine Practitioner Chris Kresser is one of today’s health mythbusters. This series he did on salt may have you rethinking its bad press as a dangerous element in your diet.

Beyond normal fluctuations in your blood pressure throughout each 24-hour day (nighttime readings are typically lower) and medications (antihistamines & cold
remedies, and steroids like Prednisone),

Other studies point to poor technique as the culprit in elevated readings. NPR posted a checklist last month for accurately achieving a reliable reading, while noting few health care workers followed these steps, many having no idea how failure to abide by them skews results. Has anyone performing this common test ever measured the circumference of your arm to ensure accurate results?

This information is not new. SunTechMed, maker of medical devices, reported in 2012 that a study from the American Heart Association originally published in 2004 addressed these very guidelines.

Since pharmaceutical remedies are costly and frequently trigger side effects including conflicts with existing medications, careful considerations of factors within your control - diet & exercise, lifestyle changes & stress reduction, insisting your healthcare  professional follow AHA guidelines for performing blood pressure testing - can avert unnecessary treatment and assure accurate records.

It’s your right.

Remember, YMMV.**

ccccalculator.ccctracker.com

*09.21.2017 Health Corner: Salt + Fat cited findings that sharply reducing salt intake can backfire, blamed for serious chronic conditions like diabetes.

**YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary

***Disclaimer: As always, check with your medical practitioner before embarking on lifestyle changes. Health Corner topics are intended to raise questions rather than answer them definitively.
Things change. New knowledge arises. Ancient wisdom is revived. And miracles take place against all odds.

Review: Toledo High School FCCLA hosted Dine In Dinner last night, raising funds to benefit Toledo Senior Center by offering classic roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy plus mouth-watering cherry-topped cheesecake. As usual, they worked around my food allergies to make sure I didn’t leave hungry.
Local performing artists Tom Von Berg and Bonnie Lindell played classics from several decades and across several genres, inspiring one couple to dance through one number. Some honored diners were seated earlier, saying they don’t drive at night, rounding the numbers up during the hour I was on hand.

A relaxing evening of music, food and friends, and they did the dishes!

Tech Report: Gifts To Suit Every Budget & Style

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is a stroll through the latest finds on TheGrommet.com, and the ultra-engaging Mozi is on my short list. Video here.

cultofmac is always good for deals on electronics, and Bionic Bird beats every other drone on the coolness scale. Video here.

ROKU sets the standard for streaming TV, and though December 9 you can pick up a $39 ROKU Streaming Stick directly from ROKU. ToledoTel customers qualify for a free ROKU set top unit (with a $99 installation fee - cheaper than the materials to DIY).

No gift list is complete without a Chromebook. PCMag lists their Top Ten of 2017. Credit for my new ACER 15” daily driver goes to Supt. Rust and Toledo School District Board of Directors, who inspired me to give it a test drive. Fast, lightweight, under $200, with amazing battery life - and runs some of my favorite Android apps like AirDroid.

Health Alert: Rise In Pediculus Humanus Capitis

Comparing notes after the weekend, my Darling Neighbor* passed along her quiet Sunday abruptly turned extensive laundry & cleaning day after her child had a sleepover. An infestation of head lice triggered this flurry of activity, and I agreed to address the matter before Thursday’s Health Corner.

Turns out it’s easy to transfer them during simple play and wrestling, shared jackets, hair brushes, pillows and plush toys.

MedicineNet has a concise page which answers dozens of questions - no, they don’t carry disease, and no, pets don’t get them, and no, chemical carpet treatment doesn’t work better than thorough dry vacuuming. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics in a recent clinical report, "The ideal treatment of lice should be safe, free of toxic chemicals, readily available without a prescription, easy to use, effective and inexpensive."

One long-time hairdresser swears by this simple remedy (slide 11). Slather mayo on scalp and hair. Leave in place 4 hours, using shower cap to isolate. Rinse thoroughly with vinegar. Comb with fine-toothed comb created for this purpose. By most accounts this smells less than delightful but it works better than commercial, having the benefit of being non-toxic for young sufferers, and conditions hair plus rinsing squeaky-clean. As always, YMMV.

*a moniker earned following a particularly delicious food shared.

Note2: Thanks to everyone who reported on Winterfest Events in Toledo last week - you make The Other Toledo a great community resource. Special thanks to Kathy Hill for sharing her valuable experience with the procedure I underwent last Wednesday, and letting me know what to expect next. Recovery taking a bit longer than anticipated (at least by me).
